Review: Boonies BBQ & Soul Food
Laundry

Food: Self Explanatory
Basically I was craving some BBQ after watching tons of Food Channel so i searched around on DineHere for some when i discovered this place. Its located in a Cloverdale Curling Rink sort of like a concession. They are open Tue-Fri 4PM-9PM, I know weird hours but he has other things he does with his food (catering, ect.). But Enough of me rambling on, heres some pictures (courtesy of BC4x4).
First time I went I got:
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2173/2332647782_f238cd323a_o.jpg
Ribs were awesome, tender, almost fall off the bone(better that way), BBQ sauce was good, Mac n cheese was good, cornbread muffin was awesome. Cost: $11.50
Today I went again I got:
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2015/2365037433_3bf4e4f3a6_o.jpg
It was called the Boonie Burger, the burger was pretty much one of the best burgers I've ever had, yes its 2 patties, cheese, Louisiana Hot Links. The seasoned fries were amazing, it literally tasted like ketchup chips when dipped in the ketchup, once again I got a cornbread muffin cause its just awesome. Cost: $8.50
Anyways great place to go, may be a little far for some but its worth it, its so much better than memphis blues imo. He also has specials sometimes, today was a deep fried red mackeral sandwich i believe. Boonie himself is a pretty good guy, we talking with him for a bit. I'll pretty much be a regular customer from now on.
Food: 10/10
Value: 10/10 (compared with what you pay for at red robins or montanas for burgers and ribs)
Atmosphere: 4/10 (hey its in a curling rink)

That first pic is one hell of an deal sealer. Can you get a view of the curling rink from the eating area?
EDIT: nm about food questions, just checked out the website menu. BTW it says that half rack of ribs, 2 sides, and cornbread is $13.50, not $11.50?

It takes 15 minutes from the Port Mann bridge to get to the place.
However CALL before you go.. they are not always open at the time they say they would.

Went today.. the place is very quiet, the rib is really good.. Boonie is the guy that answers the phone! It is a small operations since he is the only chef, but the food is good.
1 side + rack + cornbread is 11.50
They also do take out. 604 309 3438
They have been open for only 2 or so months.
It is about 10 minutes from Port Mann.

Made it out to Cloverdale today for a visit. I was definitley not disappointed. As stated, it's literally just a rink side concession stand with a few tables, but the food is fantastic.

Half rack ribs, mac and cheese, collard greens, and corn bread muffin. The ribs look more appetizing in person, the picture doesn't capture it well.
http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m204/jlomein/Boonies/IMG_5908.jpg
Also tried a cajun jambalaya on rice, with chicken, hot links, and shrimp. This was a daily special, not on their regular menu. It was quite spicy but very good.

I also had a great sweet potato pie, no picture.

Went on the weekend with my gf
paid 20.75 for a large rib dinner (mac + cheese / potato salad) and boonie burger w/ season fries
Pretty damn cheap for the amount of food you get. We couldn't finish everything...the ribs were good but wouldn't say out of the world good...for the price its really good. Mac and Cheese was alright ...cornbread was really good
We both found the Boonie Burger really good! He told us the Louisiana hot links are really shipped up here from the South~ Gives the burger a lot flavor and a nice kick to it.. + the seasoned fries were excellent! super good!
I will def. return to this place even if it is a bit of a drive for me

thanks for posting this, It's 5mins from my house and I'm going to check it out for sure. Are hot links a sausage?
jlo mein
05-18-2008, 12:52 AM
^yes hot links are a sausage.
Just FYI for everyone that I went to Boonie's again today and he's only making one dish while open for the Cloverdale Rodeo (until end of monday). The only thing you can get is 4 ribs, side of potato salad or rice and beans, and a slice of bread for $8.50. No other sides, no burgers, no pulled pork, no desserts, NO CORNBREAD MUFFIN :( .
If you're going to the Rodeo its still one of the best places in the area to eat at, but just letting everyone know that a lot of his good stuff isn't being made this weekend.
Oh BTW: while the Rodeo is on, you can only get to Boonie's through the street side entrance along 176 St. The curling rink is fenced off from the Rodeo, so you either should go to Boonie's first, or you'll have to exit the Rodeo to go there.

Me and my friends were all there yesterday, we all had the Boonie Burger, still so good, the sausage makes adds so much to it, plus I love how the inside of the bun is toasted on the grill (with what i believe is butter) gives it a crunch, awesome burger...

The burger is not small. Its all perspective of the camera, the fries being closer to the lens. If you see it in person you will realize its a huge burger, too big for me to bite into. Laundry's burger pic at the top of the thread is a better indicator as to the size of the burger.

05-25-2008, 03:43 PM
the patties don't look all the good on the burger? has anyone tried the wings yet? I'm thinking they would be real good.
Finally went over there today - unfortunately the pulled pork sandwich was out :(
I tried the hamburger and it is indeed big -- but nothing particularly memorable (there are better burgers out there, and there are certainly MUCH worst burgers out there) - BUT for $6 is an amazing deal for the amount of good food you get
the cornbread was just okay - a little too sweet, and I like my cornbread more "crumbly" and buttery
mac and cheese was good, but seriously - how do you screw that up?
now the ribs on the other hand - MIND F*CKINGLY AWESOME. the smokiness from them hits you immediately and it just sticks with you for the rest of the day - I'm definitely going back for those suckers - and next time, the pulled pork as well

The seasoned fries have a little kick, but are also quite salty. Nearby you can go to the horse track or small casino...

Boonie's BBQ is in Cloverdale. Anything in Langley isn't really close by. It would be just as easy to eat at Boonie's then go hang out at the beach in White Rock or something.

Went out to Boonie's again today...can't get enough lol. My new favourite menu item: Pulled Pork Sandwich. It's unbelievable...the best pulled pork I've ever had. It was sold out one night I went there previously, and now I understand why. Go have one. Now. Seriously.
The fantastic pulled pork sandwich (with an added cornbread)

So I finally got back, and OMFGBBQ this place is money.
Went with Sue and my dad, both of them got the pulled pork sandwich with seasond fries. and I got the hot links sandwich with corn bread and WOW the foods good. I'm a wing guy so hard to start off with some honeyed hot wings (some of the best I had) were waiting for are food and they brough us each 2 ribs to try(WOW smoked and pulled right off the bone) The pulled pork was great the buns are so fresh and melted in your mouth.
Lets just say I'm going back for sure, Boonie came out talked to us like he does with all his customers saying how hes brining new food from new Orleans such as Gumbo cat fish (had some in Oregon and it's good)
But for sure if u like good food check this place out (had to pic up some peacan and sweet potato pie for later)

Went there last night with a friend. I had the pulled pork sandwich, it was unbelievable and so big. The pork was so tender and slathered in BBQ sauce. Cornbread muffin was also fantastic.
Had the Sweet Potato pie even though I was full, really creamy and smooth filling, the crust was nice and flaky.
My friend had the ribs, he said they were fantastic. Collared greens were good too.
He was saying that later on this year he will be making gumbo's, jambalaya's, and having a crab night possibly mmmmmm.
All in all I will be back there soon.

My problem is that I find both the pulled pork and ribs so good, that I can't bring myself to visit Boonie's and not have each of them in one sitting. :p I also took home a peach cobbler and pecan pie.

Boonie's BBQ and Soul Food is closing! Last day they're open is Friday April 3 from 3PM-9PM.
Last chance for Boonies BBQ & Soul Food!
... for a couple of months anyway... We are excited to announce that we are in negotiations to start up a REAL restaurant!
Planned completion is June 2009 - we will be posting more details as they become available.
Ribs in a Curling Rink? Who would have thought that was even possible ...and here we are just over a year later with many regular customers and loads of excellent reviews!
In the meantime, 5 Star Catering, whose catering facilities burned down a couple of weeks ago, has made us an offer for our space at the Curling Rink. We are truly sorry for the late notice but this Friday night will be our LAST night at the Curling Rink. It's been a LOT of hard work juggling both the curlers and restaurant customers, but we're glad we gave it a try and are looking forward to being able to focus solely on the restaurant customers in the future.
Try one of these options to stay in the loop:
Watch the Restaurant page on the website - www.boonies.ca
Join the mailing list on our website Contact Us page
Join our Facebook Group: Boonie's BBQ & Soul Food
Follow us on Twitter: www.twitter.com/BooniesBBQ
Plans are also in the works for Boonie's specialty food line: Hot Links, Cornbread Mix, BBQ Spice Rub... and more!
Thank You for Being Part of Our Success! I'll be back!

Insider Info (not really, just talk to Boonie and he'll talk all day)
The new Boonie's looks like its gonna be in Walnut Grove, so just a quick exit off the Langley exit, he also wants to have a Jazz band playing in his new place and a ton of other stuff...
And man I need to get some ribs tonight, cause waiting til June gonna suck...

Maple Ridge wtfffff
I used to live 5 minutes away from Boonies. Now I have to pay a toll to get there. The chances of myself going there often are slim to none.
I know rent is probably cheaper out there then it is in Surrey, but I think he is making a bad move going to Maple Ridge. His trade area has just shrunk DRAMATICALLY.
Maple Ridge has a population of approx 70k, while Pitt Meadows is a tad shy of 20k I believe. Add in the other small un-incorporated communities in the area, and you are looking at probably 100k people for a trade area.
Now look at Surrey, which has over 400k in population alone, and add Langley and Delta into the mix and you are well over half a million people.
He is probably banking on the fanbase he created from his Cloverdale location, but for most families that went there (and when I went there there were always quite a few), it is not economical to drive 30 minutes while paying a toll to eat at Boonies. There is only a certain distance people are willing to drive for a meal on a consistent basis.
He will still do OK, because his food is quality, and will serve the Maple Ridge area well, but he is missing out on larger markets by moving farther out.
I'll try to make my way down to his restaurant once, because that pulled pork was heavenly.
Edit: The price of commercial space has come down significantly all over the Lower Mainland, especially south of the Fraser, so I am also confused why he left the Surrey area which was more central to Richmond, Delta and Vancouver customers.

You beat me to it, I was going to post a new thread when his restaurant actually opens lol. I do agree that Maple Ridge seems to be a poor location. Boonie makes great food but I'm not sure of his business sense. I mean, opening a soul food restaurant at a Cloverdale curling rink? Now a Maple Ridge location? Boonies could be a huge hit in the Vancouver area with the right business knowledge and marketing. Look how popular Memphis Blues is with their crap BBQ!

"The lease is signed and financing is complete. We are just waiting for washrooms which were apparently overlooked when building the restaurant! Hopefully they will be in place this week or next and we can move in and start this up!
We will be located in the Quality Inn & Suites in Langley - it's a brand new hotel on 201 Street at the back of the Home Depot Parking lot. We'll have about a 30 seat restaurant as well as an 80 seat banquet room at the hotel, and of course take out.
Don't look for us yet! We need washrooms before we can get our business licence! Just a few more weeks people but we'll let you know as soon as you can come in."

alright I just got back. It's in a whole lot better location now that's for sure. As said it's in the Quality Inn hotel basically the back of the Home Depot parking lot. I should of taken a pic but didn't think of it.
The restaurant is not all that big you can see the open kitchen when you first get in. You can tell there's going to be a nice patio in the summer which will be perfect. I didn't take a shot of all the tables since a bunch of other people were eating and I was too pussy :haha:
The father inlaw served me and laughed because I was his first customer and you can tell he never served a day in his life so far lol

http://img34.imageshack.us/img34/7412/patiovi.jpg (http://img34.imageshack.us/i/patiovi.jpg/)
Now onto the food, I got the Rib's which comes with your choice of a side and cornbread for $16.95.
http://img514.imageshack.us/img514/3255/1272751228037.jpg (http://img514.imageshack.us/i/1272751228037.jpg/)
http://img228.imageshack.us/img228/2550/cornbread.jpg (http://img228.imageshack.us/i/cornbread.jpg/)
I of course had really high expectations since it's boonies and the food at the curling rink was beyond unbelievable but sad to say I was highly disappointed. The ribs were not really tender and I was not feeling the sauce he used on it. The fries were very tasty but Boonie doesn't have the seasoning made up yet since he has been working 24/7 to get it up and running. The corn bread was straight up money, so so good. He even gave me 2 extra to bring home to eat later.
The g/f got the pulled pork sandwich with fries for $9.95.
http://img297.imageshack.us/img297/659/pulledpork.jpg (http://img297.imageshack.us/i/pulledpork.jpg/)
Other then mustard being on the sandwich(which shes not a fan) she really liked it with the sauce they had but really not overly impressed.
Now this review being said don't really take it to heart. The menu's were not basicly made(photocopied for now) until 1030am and they have a whole lot more to do to get it top notch boonies we are used to. I would really give it a month rather then me going there 3hrs after being opened like I did and getting disappointed. Being a family business and everything being homemade it will take a bit to really get used to the new location and the different options that are on the menu.
Boonie even said that he has never done a breakfast before so on that side of things it's all new to him. He does have lots of plans tho and can't wait to go back when they have everything running smoothly

Good to hear the jambalaya is worth trying. It sounds pretty tasty. What kind of pasta did they have??

6465 201 Street.
Go into the Home Depot parking lot and look for the Quality Inn. Boonies is inside the Quality Inn.

went there this wkend. Their pulled pork sandwich did not disappoint. My gf wanted to try to Gumbo but unfortunately they took it down. She got the jambalaya instead. Little too hot for my taste but it was great nonetheless.
Went to try it today.
It did not disappoint! The pulled pork burger was awesome, and the ribs falls right off the bone!!! The seasoned fries was very very good too. I finished almost all of it. :D
Only down was it did not have liquor license yet so no beer. The ribs would have been incredible with some cold beer.
Got to talk a bit with the owner and he said they should be getting the liquor license in a week or so. Plus, they are putting live Jazz bands every saturday in the patio with some outdoor T-BONE STEAK!!! Really looking forward for the steak. Will definitely go again if I am down to Langley.

Alright, so I just got back from Boonies after doing some work with the Abbotsford Police.
My co-worker and I ordered the Pulled Pork Sandwich with seasoned fries and a half-rack of ribs both to share. For sides, we went for the macaroni and cheese and red beans and rice. The pulled pork had just the right amount of sauce, not making it too dry nor too sloppy and it locked in the flavour just right. Seasoned fries were great. Ribs fell right off the bone. Mac'n'cheese was awesome and so were the red beans'n'rice. We were both stuffed.
Overall, it was as good as people claimed it to be. One downside was that we were expecting the food to be a little hotter, however, we did take our time so perhaps the food cooled down. Not to mention, we went during lunch and it was pretty dead. I would definitely go back to try the Boonie burger next time. Oh, and the corned bread was delicious! Have a look! :)

I noticed that the ribs look different compared to what pictures from the original first post.

I think that may have just been a problem with the white balance in the picture.
Enough geek talk. I've got an itch to get some BBQ! I definitely need to head out there an try it out. I haven't been too impressed with Memphis Blues on Broadway, and I've been spoiled by the good BBQ they have out in Colorado.

I was never a fan of Memphis Blues but speaking of that place. They are opening another location a 5 minute drive from Boonies new location on Fraser Hwy near the Price Smart. There is also a Vera's burgers going in the same parking lot. It's nice to finally have some choices out in the boonies. :)

^I've never been to Boonies but I wouldn't necessarily consider Memphis Blues an alternative, lol. That place is junk, people who ride MB's cock are losers who can't taste shit from piss.

I just went to Boonies new location and let me tell you..I was quite disappointed since I went to his old location(Curling rink) about 4x and each time has been quite good and their was pretty much no complains from me, so after waiting a month after their opening, I decided to head down to their new location. I ordered the Full-Rack ribs and Pulled Pork sandwich with Macaroni and Cheese and Seasoned fries.
First with the pulled pork, this sandwich was pretty good, not as good as before but it hit the spot perfectly, a little too saucy but that's just my opinion. The seasoned fries was good as well. Onto the bad, the BBQ sauce for the ribs was weird tasting, it didn't taste like their normal BBQ sauce and it had a weird after-taste. The meat inside was bland and tasteless as well. The up side of the ribs was that, the meat was really tender and definitely fall-off the bones.
8/10 for Pulled Pork
3/10 for Ribs

Anyone join the facebook group and just got the message that Boonies is CLOSED?
For anyone not in the group:
Our customers came from all over the lower mainland and our family worked hard to create a welcoming place with great food, great music and a family atmosphere. It is with great sadness that we announce we have ceased operations as of Wednesday, October 20th, ,2010.
Opening a restaurant and serving his granny’s recipes had always been a dream of Boonie’s. In 2008 he was offered a contract to run the concession and catering inside the Cloverdale Curling Rink. While there he decided to run it as a small restaurant to see how people liked the food. Running at odd hours and days due to catering requirements for the curling club, Boonie still gathered a great number of loyal followers while operating out of that unlikely location. With the contract coming to an end he decided to start the search for a new location. Finding a location for an independent restaurant in this world of chains proved to be harder than anticipated and we were unable to open again until this year.
We had finally found a location in an area of Langley that we really liked, and it was close to home. Another odd location – inside a hotel – but since we were able to run in the curling rink the location wasn’t a big concern. Unfortunately the hotel owners had building permit issues with the restaurant space and the opening was delayed for about 4 months past the original move in date, putting everything on hold. Since opening in May, Boonie’s Southern Soul has proven to be a popular place with loyal customers, gathering more supporters every day and was even scheduled to be featured on a food network show in early spring.
Unfortunately we have been forced out of our current location. We are reviewing legal options but at this time have no plans to reopen as it is not easy to find another spot. Boonie is still available as a personal chef and caterer however, and welcomes any contact. He can be reached by email at the link below.
Boonie is heartbroken over the closure. We sincerely appreciate your support over these past few years and will miss serving you!
Fuck, and I didn't even get to go and try it!
just got that msg, my food heart is shattered...

Next RS mini meet = Catered BBQ? :D
For BBQ, Burgers Etc. >> Memphis
I'm not sure where else in the city I can get decent BBQ.
I was down in the states in last month, and I had WAY better BBQ than both Memphis and Burgers Etc. put together.
A freaking CHAIN restaurant.
So now I'm curious how much better it gets.

His new restaurant was nice... another odd location though, and it seems to have hurt him in the end.
When he was looking for a new place last year, I wondered why he was unable to find a small space in a strip mall somewhere in Surrey/Langley. Commercial vacancy rates are quite high over the past few years, and he could have gotten quite the deal if he played his cards right.
If he leased a place properly in a strip mall, a landlord would be unable to force him out like this in such a quick fashion. I'm not sure what his arrangement with the hotel was, but obviously he did not have the proper clauses in place for his lease and it really screwed him over.
Boonie was a hell of a cook and made good food, but I have to think that his business sense might not have been as good :( I'm really gonna miss his pulled pork sandwiches.
