Hamilton Street Grill in Yaletown. Maybe not the best steak place around, but they have a unique cut called the Hanger steak. It's a tougher cut of beef, but has an incredible flavour. I haven't seen it offered at any other local steak places.

Second Hy's, especially the cheese bread, to die for! For those going to Gotham's and need help picking the wine, PM me. We recently done a study on their wine list looking at the ratings.

I had that during dine-out, i was not in favour of it... very... normal.
Seems like something I shouldn't be paying for... tough, and very... chewy?

In terms of Steak Houses I've tried the following
Keg - Generic and nothing special. Anything other then the prime rib is shit.
Hy's - Meh. Expected a little bit more. Nothing special but the starter bread is off the chain
Mortons - Dope imo. My favorite so far
Gotham - Pretty decent as well but I like Mortons more

Best steak I've had, has not been in town
I've been on a few business trips to Orlando, FL
There's a restaurant called Kres
very classy place, and their Kobe Ribeye is the best thing on this planet. I go out of my way to go on trips to Orlando now simply for that steak.
thats how good it is =P
I plan to have my next family vacation there so my wife can finally try it hehe

we had a dinner, it was either the Keg or salt lik. The vote went to salt lik cause the girls were prettier.
i gotta say, the decor, and atmosphere and the waitresses were super pretty, nice and very very professional. we were all very impressed with the steaks. the appetizers were ok but the steaks were amazing.
Salt lik - totally unexpected for being a great place for steaks at a great price. it's on alberni and burrard.

Marinaside grill in North van under the overpass.

The Keg tends to over season(salt) their Prime ribs and is never consistent.
Try their Big Beef ribs too, its huge!
Black Angus
I know this isn't local anymore but there's one ~30 mins across the border. If you love AAA angus steak then this is the place.

Gothams is overrated.
The keg is consistant

Griffins at Vancouver Hotel is really good too
The hanger steak at hamilton street grill is horrible.. lol !!! I don't know how flavorful the meat is b/c they just drenched it in sauce !

Teppan Village up in Whistler has some of the best steak and seafood you'll ever have. But the best in Vancouver is hands down Gotham, the best combo is the Porterhouse with a side of Gotham Hash Browns and the belgian chocolate bourbon cake for dessert. :drool the taste is coming back to me...

The Keg is usually bad for me, I think I only had 1 or 2 good steaks there. The rest are decent at best, and I have had to send steaks back more than a few times.
You might ask why I keep going back, but as you probably know, The Keg is on most peoples' short list of places to go for a steak, so you end up going there quite a bit.
Want to hear something crazy? Try Boston for a good steak. Yup, the HK style cafe has great steaks - definitely better than the Keg. And the price is good too.
If you want a really good steak, Gotham is a sure bet.

Hy's is the way to go.....what makes them different is...the decor is completely old school and their cheese toast is to die for. I would go to Hy's just for their cheese toast and wedge salad.
When you go to Hy's you expect to see Don Draper and Roger Sterling from Mad Men having a few cocktails.
btw, Hy's is the first restaurant for the Eisenstat (spelling?) family. Owners of The Keg.
Morton all the way, but on regular days Keg's prime rib is good enough.

I went to CHOP, it was really expensive for what you pay for in RICHMOND. I mean it's not bad, but I wouldn't wnat to go there cause it's at a location where you just eat and you can't bump around after, compared to other downtown location.
Yes, the steak bites on their appetizers (are meat ends) they are ok.. i'm sure I wrote a review somewhere before on CHop.
Caver's steak house at Executive Airport Hotel in richmond, New Westminster and Gilbert is suppose to be really good but I saw some reviews and they bashed them like crazy so i'm not sure if i want to take my clietns there.

One-time experience @ Morton's sucked. Tried their filet mignon and it was bland as hell.
Been to Gothams several times. Tried their taster entree - it was great. I always enjoy my time there. It's smaller than Mortons and therefore service imo was better. Ambiance @ Gothams much better than @ Mortons.
The Keg has been good. When you order medium rare, you get medium rare. Ordered rare last time and hell it was rare. Service sort of slipped a bit the last time I was there and food didn't disappoint.

you can buy dry-aged, organic, Canada Prime or AAA grade steaks at Hopcotts out in Pitt Meadows and the pricing is basically the same as superstore (all their meats are dry-aged for at least 28days, regardless of grade)
they get their beef from their cow farm next door

Boston in Richmond was not bad, decently priced - HK style.
Saltlik is on par with Keg pricing and decent steaks as well. Kegs are hit N miss depending on type of steak, their prime rib is usually consistent. Hy's is great as is Morton's, have yet to try Gothams to compare. Cactus Club surprisingly has decent steaks too, Earls = hit N miss again.

Sunday Surf and Turf at $35 for a 16oz(i think) tenderloin
From my experience, Hy's, Keg's, and oddly enough, Cactus Club's steaks seem to be the most consistent. Like someone said earlier, Earls can be pretty hit or miss, depending on the Forno cook.
Personally, I was let down by Gothams. I kept hearing about it, and when I finally went, it was just average to me. Maybe I was just unlucky and had a bad chef? But I don't think I'll be going back. If you're going to run a $50 steak joint, you have to be consistent with every dish.

I don't know about you guys but it seems like a sin to me to go to a good steakhouse and order the tenderloin. BORING!
That's like going to Hy's and ordering a porterhouse well done with chicken on the side.
I like the Gotham porterhouse and the bone-in rib steak. So flavourful!

I almost always order the rib steak because of the fat marbling. However, they have changed the menu and the rib steak is now bone-in. Is it a difference cut?
I was dissapointed with it since it was not as marbly as the rib steak before and not as flavourful.... Guess I'll be ordering the prime rib at the Keg from now on...

Not in-town, but went to Morton's in San Juan, Puerto Rico several years ago on a business trip where my wife would get fully reimbursed for meals. I ordered a double porterhouse steak, french onion soup, and a dessert. My wife bet me I couldn't finish it, but I did. I was so full she had to partially carry me back up to the hotel and I had to sit up for a couple hours on the bed, but it was worth it :accepted::fuckyea:

They are the 2 most renown high-end steak houses, very consistent. I've been to Hy's twice (cheese bread :sweetjesus:) and Gotham's once (too poor) but both are very good. Gotham's edges out Hy's though.
On a side note I really liked Mortan's too, too bad they closed down, I wonder why they couldn't compete? They have some good quality food and service too ... maybe bad location?

Depends what you mean by "decent".
Specialty steakhouses are obviously going to be better than the all-around casual dining restaurants (Earls, Joeys, etc)
When it comes to those places, I think Cactus is the best out of the bunch.
Go spoil yourself for a nice steak dinner (not tenderloin) at a steakhouse. You'll notice the difference right away.

No votes for the Brave Bull on Clark and Hastings?!? C'mon man! The prices ($10 all in) have not changed in years as the owner says it'd cost to much to update the signs.

Seriously though, credit to Cactus Club and Earl's for their consistency of steak - they have these fancy infrared dual sided burners that they use to grill their steaks so there's no talent required to get them right. It' s not great steak but it's certainly good solid stuff that's usually error free.
I like Hamilton Street Grill for their relaxed style and good value - I love the hanger steak they make although they aren't as consistent with how cooked they make their steaks.
A long gone favourite of mine is Rex Grill that used to be in the financial area and they shut down after Cactus Club opened up across from them on Burrard.

Hy's was rated best steakhouse in Vancouver by Vancouver Magazine.
I actually prefer Hy's and Keg over Gotham as well, but I might've just had an unlucky experience at Gotham.
And regarding Cactus and Earls.. I usually don't go for their steaks unless I happen to be there and I'm really craving one.. After having the steakhouse cuts, anywhere else's steaks seem pretty mundane.
