How the shit does a jacket attain the attribute of "cute"?

If it isn't pink, purple, or some girly colour and isn't on a 4 year old...it's not cute.

It's a girl thing. They say EVERYTHING is cute.

Oh those shoes are cute!
Oh that skirt looks cute on you!
Oh, what a cute top!

My workplace is probably 80+% female... Fortunately, the ones in my area are younger and/or decent looking!

But nice jacket, Crayon!

^ Hey that's a nice jacket

HB20's jacket is pretty G too, wish I knew what it was so i could get that

Something with down and fur is pretty much the only thing you can wear when it goes -30, -40 where I live now http://www.clipartof.com/images/emoticons/xsmall2/273_cold_person_shivering.gif
For colder days I have a NF Gotham (2007 style), otherwise I wear an energie or a armani winter jacket

The original cost is $88.00
But since i work there,
i got it for 50% off =)

The new fall 08 items came in last week on wednesday, Metrotown has a few sizes left over, but I can always check other stores' stock to see if they have them or not.

I am in desperate need of something along the lines of the below criteria:
- doesn't scream brand names
- doesn't look like a garbage bag or is very showy
- warm enough for the cold winters here
- can survive in the rain (shells are too thin though)
- preferably not over $200
- not trench coat or peacoat, too mature looking for my age
- preferably not a ski jacket, but if it has nice colours then sure why not

Unfortunately, workers cannot take responsibility into abusing their 50% staff discount (50% is accounted for items you buy for yourself).. just for safety concerns and all. Either way, Hongy, can you PM me?

I bought a spiewak parka back in 2006 at boysco, a real nice jacket. Great fit and keeps you warm. Also the fur trimmed hood was real cyote, so it was definetly worth the $450, compared to other parkas nowadays that use fake fur and price it for well over $400 (energie)

I believe they are now owned by Amer Sports. HQ still remains in North Vancouver.

since when is arcteryx an alternative? a less mainstream brand with nice lines and limited distribution is an alternative. and by the way amer is the conglomerate that owns adidas, suunto, salomon, artceryx, atomic etc. north face is owned by vanity fair (the magazine).

Going a bit OT here but...
I should have been more clear, I meant an alternative to what was already posted in this thread. Amer does not own Adidas http://www.amersports.com/brands/amer_sports_brands.html

the_rickster
09-09-2008, 08:34 AM
let's put this to bed. i have a ton of friends in the outdoor industry. i know all the reps for all the major brands, and they all know who owns who.

adidas-salomon is a single company. adidas works as an independent and owns a few other brands under its own umbrella (taylormade, reebok). adidas-salomon bought arcteryx and amer manages its own brands plus the salomon side, including arc. adidas runs itself independently and manages the other brands under the AG.

just because it isn't in black and white and right there for the world to see doesn't mean it doesn't exist. that was my point with the north face bit... just because a magazine company owns it and there's no link to tnf.com on their website doesn't mean it isn't so.

anyways, let's get this back on topic, its a good thread with good po. if you want to argue more, pm me.

kaitamasaki
09-09-2008, 01:44 PM
I like arcteryx but their prices kill me... I like their waterproof and insulated jackets, but anything over $300 is just too much. I got my North Face bomber jacket for less than $200 on ebay but it's not waterproof at all and it dies in the rain. We all know how much it rains here during the fall/winter days. Spiewak is nice but I don't know where to get them other than Plenty (I forgot if they sell them or not) and Karmaloop which doesn't sell it anymore.

Do not, I repeat, DO NOT order something from lvr. First they charge a flat rate for international shipping, then they charge shipping rates (which are quite expensive) all in euros. If you are ordering that jacket i recommend either eluxury.com or diabro.net. If you want to try to find it locally your best bet is Holt Renfrew and Leones or Enve.

For colder days I have a NF Gotham (2007 style), otherwise I wear an energie or a armani winter jacket

http://www.newsletterarchive.org/cache/0/0/0/3/e/6/e/1/2067377.jpg like that, in black

Cool jacket! :D How much did you pay for yours? Also Anybody know of local stores where I can buy this? thanks!

you guys ever heard of casual? whats wrong w/ a hooded jacket?
not everyone is trying to look like the cover of GQ everywhere they go.

explain how wearing something practical like a hooded jacket knocks points off your IQ?

some people here have an individual sense of style and dont get all their fashion tips from mens magazines and fashion websites to see what men SHOULD wear...

Hoodies are fine, just not crazy all-over-print (fake) ones that high school kids rock all the time......
All the jackets I see in here are either the fur hooded ones or peacoats/blazers... the other ones look rather plain or too thin to prove to be warm. Fur hoods are kinda played out since like 4 years ago even though they look good, and the latter is too mature for casual, go-to-school wear.

I would never follow that article. Are we living in some country club with a dress code??

Well the Esquire article is really not that extreme, asking men not to show their nipples or toes at work.

Believe it or not, private clubs have much stricter dress codes than mentioned in the article.

http://www.vancouverclub.ca/club/policies.html

DRESS CODE

Members and their guests are required to observe the dress code whenever they are in the Club. Smart casual attire, as defined below, is permitted in all areas of the third and fifth floors, in The Grill and Conservatory, in private rooms and when entering and exiting the Club to and from these areas. In all other areas of the Club, business attire, as defined below, is required at all times. Business attire is also acceptable in those areas where smart casual attire is permitted.

"Business attire" for gentlemen means jackets worn with ties and tailored slacks, or suits and ties. Women must wear dresses, suits, skirts with blouses, tailored trousers with blouses, or evening pants.

"Smart casual attire" for men means shirts with collars and sleeves or turtleneck sweaters and tailored slacks. Seasonally, knee length tailored shorts are permitted provided shoes (not sandals) and knee socks are worn. Sweatshirts, jeans or warmup suits are not permitted, nor is apparel with advertising messages or slogans, denim of any colour, cargo pants, collarless shirts, hiking style boots, boat or athletic footwear. Running shoes or sandals are not permitted.

"Smart casual attire" for women means shirts with collars or blouses, collarless shirts with jackets and tailored slacks or skirts. Seasonally, knee length tailored shorts or sleeveless summer dresses are permitted. Again, Sweatshirts, jeans or warmup suits are not permitted, nor is apparel with advertising messages or slogans, denim of any colour, cargo pants, hiking style boots, boat or athletic footwear.

When dressing in smart casual attire, it is expected that Members will use their good judgement and exercise discretion to ensure that they and their guests are dressed in keeping with good taste and the proper decorum of the Club.

Agree popped collars are super lame.

Dress codes don't apply only to stuck-up country clubs like in the movies. Lots of places in the world do require guests to respect the proper attire, (restaurants, hotels, business meetings).

It's one thing not to like these rules, but another to reject them simply out of ignorance.

I was thinking one of these Northface jackets:

http://www.sportchek.ca/family/index.jsp?categoryId=3870704

Particularily the North Face McMurdo Down Insulated Jacket Mens (#399.99), although the The North Face Vostok Down Insulated Jacket Mens ($450) looks a bit longer..

For -20-40 weather I want something that comes down to just above the knees..

Anyone have experience with these jackets or suggestions for a good winter parka/jacket?

I bought the McMurdo Jacket last year, it was perfect for -20 weather (used in toronto/montreal last january) but the jacket i felt was VERY HEAVY.

please go try it on and walk around the store if you actually buy it.

Yup getting cold here in Edmonton..was -17 with the windchill..

I never had a winter jacket in Vancouver last year.

SoI went to the mall and I tried on the McMurdo..and while i know it would keep me warm...you're right..it is way TOO HEAVY and BULKY.

I think the best bet is to buy something lighter and just layor urself..

I'm leaning towards this jacket right now
