I have a very hard time with macro, perhaps I'm doing it wrong. I have a Tamron 90mm and do you just set it at 1:1 and move the camera forward/backward to get focus? People say use a tripod, but how are you supposed to use one when you're taking pics of insects that fly? I've seen some awesome insect macro but I have no idea on how they can get so close. Are you supposed to just shoot from far away, not at 1:1, and just crop it? My insect shots, my lens is like only inches from the bug.
First attempt at Macro using a non-macro lens, the Nikon 18-200VR.

so is there some kind of ring that has threads on both sides so u can screw 2 lenses together? or do u have to fab up something urself? like the gehtto tape style?! lol... seems interesting and a great alternative to buying macro lenses...

Do a google search for macro reverse ring and you should get the idea.

Thanks Mana. Those were taken with the semi-borked Sigma 90mm Canon-mount macro that I got off POTN. Rather annoyed, because it won't shoot at anything smaller than f2.8... gives me an Err01.
Going to bring it to Camtex to see if they can fix it.

Are you trying to do reverse macro?
mount your lense on your camera, use Av to set the aperature to the setting you want, now hold down the DOF preview button while you remove your lens. The blades will stay put once the electronic connection is gone. Next time you mount the lens the proper way, it will reset back to wide open.

Can you let go of the DOF preview button after the lens is removed or do you need to hold onto it while shooting as well?

You just need to hold it while removing the lens, it basically just forces the aperature blades into position, instead of the camera moving them as you hit the shutter.

Allright here we go. 40D + 100mm Macro + 68mm extension tubes + MR-14ex Flash unit. All hand held.
Today i just went for a nice little walk around Iona Park behind YVR airport. No real tricks. Just a steady hand. My arms get sore sometimes from trying to stand still and get the shot. I don't wait around forever, i just find what i find.
I hope you guys enjoy the macro shots. Anything that you can see to make them more appealing? I would love to get some shots of butterfly's, and more interesting bugs.
When you get down to such a level with the bugs i think they are fascinating. Even though sometimes i end up brushing myself off after some shots.
Any more info that you'd like just ask. Thanks!

I have a Canon XTI with the 18-55mm non macro lens. I used the reverse lens adapter to do the shots. My wife did a lot of pictures as well and she was fine. I think it might have to do with the fact that i was trying to focus with the lens. I will give it a shot again later see how I do.

All these pics were taken with a Micro-Nikkor 105mm with VR turned on and the camera in programmed mode. All shots were handheld with natural light (except 1 or 2 with fill flash). VR works great and handheld shots are easy even with the weight of this lens and the camera body.
Unfortunately, even though you can shoot at a slow shutter speed, you can't prevent your subject from moving. With the wind blowing it was hard to get clear shots.
These were the first pics I ever took with this lens. Looking forward to practicing my macro shooting when my daughter isn't bugging me. ;)

its a hardache to take macro b/c most of the time you would probably need a tripod in order to take shots in less than ideal lighting... imo

tamron 90mm goes for 450-500 usually. uses a screw drive motor for AF. if you wait until jan, prices will go up to 500-550 due to a new version with internal motor.
most macro lenses go for 400-600 dollars for tamron, sigma, and tokina. all are good.
extension tubes allow for a magnification greater than 1x. however, you usually lose AF unless you buy kenko extension tubes (quite expensive)

Tamron macro lens is quite good for very cheap. You can find one of craigslist for around $250 or so. Its a good lens too, gets the job done nicely. I have a friend with one.
I picked up a Tamron SP 90mm F2.8 (not the current 90mm model) off Craigslist for $175 a few months back. Haven't had time to do any nice macro work yet.

Have you tried increasing the f-stop and using an external flash so you can get the whole ant in focus? Not that this picture is wrong or anything :)

My setup is 40D + MPE-65mm + MR-14EX flash @ F10. This shot is about 3.5 - 4X life size, with a bit of a crop. So with the MPE you are your aperture x magnification = actual aperture. So around F40. To get the whole ant in focus you would need to focus stack. Then you would need a stationary object, of which ants aren't. In other words, its tough.
niforpix
03-23-2009, 05:03 PM
^^ ah, nice setup. The MPE-65 is all manual focus isn't it? I have a similar set up, well, sort of. I have a 40D as well + 100mm macro + I use my 580ex for flash, which works pretty well for most of my shots :)
Keep posting. Pics look awesome! :)

Thanks! Yeah its alot of fun to use forsure! Sometimes not so fun tho, because it is full manual. It doesn't tell you when you have anything in focus so its totally your eyes. The DOF in so thin its crazy sometimes!
I haven't used every Canon lens out there, but i would imagine the MPE would be the toughest lens in the lineup.

They tend to become stationary after you put them in the freezer for about 30 seconds. Permanently stationary after about 2 minutes. ;) You can also invert one of those cans of canned air so it shoots out the liquid to freeze them.

I would definately say so. No AF makes it very tricky. How close do you have to get with your lens to get those results? I recently took a shot of my cat's fang that just happened to be laying on my couch, and I think I was about a foot away to get this kind of result:

Niforpix, the MP-E isn't something you just strap onto your camera and go shooting. You NEED a macro flash (not a pop-up or a hot shoe mounted 580). Light with the MP-E is the biggest thing, and getting focus can be tricky. You don't focus as much as you rock your body back and forth millimeter by millimeter trying to hold still getting your shot in focus(all while your holding your breath). I've spent months trying to get decent shots with it, and am now just getting the hang of it. If you'd wana try my setup out i wouldn't mind showing you how to use it a bit!

Senna4ever

I'm using the Novoflex EOS to F Mount adapter. It's a little expensive at about $250, but it's extremely well made, unlike the shitty $50 ones you can get on e-bay. As the lens is a 30 year old manual focus lens, there is no AF, but AF is useless anyway in macro photography. Exposure is via stop down metering.

From here (http://www.adafruit.com/blog/2010/08/25/how-to-take-great-photos-of-your-projects-the-adafruit-photo-tutorial-by-johngineer/#more-6590):
"Light Bulbs — In photo and theater-lighting speak these are simply called “lamps”. You should get proper photoflood lamps from a photo supplier, rather than using the 300W lamps from the hardware store. Two common types are ECA (250W) and ECT (500W) — both of these burn at a color temperature of 3200 Kelvin, which is the standard color of photographic tungsten lights. Some people like to use daylight-balanced CFL lamps, but there is a tradeoff. The lights don’t generate as much heat, but their color rendition is poor compared to tungsten lamps. For any of the science-minded who may dispute this, I suggest you look at the spectral output of both: CFLs are a pretty much a picket fence, while incandescents are mostly continuous (though admittedly biased toward IR). The high-powered fusion of the sun puts out a mostly continuous spectrum, overlayed with Fraunhofer spikes, and this is what our eyes (and our camera sensors) are designed for. Gaps in the output spectrum of CFLs cause some colors to be rendered unnaturally, so it’s better to use a continuous-spectrum source."
Is this a big deal? I looked online and their prices for the bulbs aren't $ at all. Anyone tried these or get them locally?
Senna4ever
08-27-2010, 10:29 PM
We have the ECT & ECA bulbs at Beau as well as the daylight balanced CFL's. The tungsten bulbs do not last very long....about 6 hours, and have a nasty habit of exploding on occasion. I had one explode on me one, and a model had just stepped away from the light. The broken shards of glass actually melted the carpet when they landed. Can you imagine if she was in front of the light when it exploded? This is why I personally will never use them. The CFL's are ok for most uses, but if you're hyper critical about colour, then you may not want to use them.
The best constant lights out there right now seem to be the HMI lighting. They take about 8 minutes to warm up, but are a constant 5600K and are intense. We have the Joker 400W & Joker 800W lights, and they are amazing - light output is 2000W & 4000W tungsten equivalent, but power draw is only 5.5 amps & 12.5 amps respectively. Of course they cost $5000+ to purchase, but we do rent them.

first shot with my new ring flash. i still have no adapter to fit it to my lens, so i had to hand hold it to do this. getting hold of a 72C Canon adapter is proving to be a challenge.
anyways, i biased the flash ratio over to the right side, to get a shadowing effect, pretty good results.

ok, sorry about the last post, i looked at it the next day and pulled it.
today, i happened to see a spider shedding it's outer layer as i was out in the back yard. did i ever run back and grab my camera!
in this first pic, you can see the start of the process, just starting to pull it's legs out of the old "shells" :

after 15 minutes or so, it was almost done:

i was out on the deck grilling dinner and i heard one of our many wind chimes fall to the ground. i had just replaced all the strings on most of them, as they rot over the wet winters. did i miss this one? did copper hummingbird get hurt?
http://www.epicdevelopements.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/hbirdpic.jpg
so after i picked him up i had a look inside the copper "bell" that it hangs from. guess what i saw?

it was really hard not blowing out the white colours while not under exposing the rest of the plant.

my external monitor setup really helped out with this set. pointing straight upwards, i could not even see the camera's LCD. i can't say enough how the large viewing area helped me in focussing(all manual). my errors are now only related to settings, but i quickly fix that after 1 or 2 shots.
last year's wasp nest in my patio's copper chime has come back to life with more tenants, so it was begging to be shot.
