What is your definition of beginner?
I have a friend from HK and he hasn't seen snow in his life before...
Somehow, he actually knows how to skate though. But holding a hockey stick, not so sure about that...

Played with these guys a bit. They're a good group and provide a healthy enviro for ultra beginners.
Maybe you should swing by and watch a pick up session with these guys for a few minutes and judge whether your friend is comfortable enough playing or if he needs a few more stick and puck sessions before actually playing hockey.
or,
You can play by yourself and judge the group and environment for yourself and see if your friend can handle it the next time round.

I might be interested myself. But I'm not all that great either.
I played street hockey back in elementary and highschool, but never played on ice before. I don't even have a player hockey stick actually, cause I used to play goalie. lol
So is full equipment required? Because I don't have anything, like the body protection, hockey pants, jersey, etc.
And 23:00-00:15, is that friday 11pm - sat 12:15am? or sat 11pm - sun 12:15am? I'm confused.

You do realize that they use black rubber pucks right?
The bare minimum I would wear is shin pads, pants, jock, elbow pads, helmet, gloves, and of course jersey. And no, running shoes is not a good idea.
If you are a non-skater or playing with non-skaters, a chest protector and full face shield would be to your benefit.
And if there are pyscho's like me playing, better not act brave and try to block shots from the point.
BTW, if it was friday 11 pm, he would have said that.
The fact he said 11 pm, saturday's, then I would expect start at 11 pm saturday and end at 12:30 am sunday morning.

Let's say you absolutely have no hockey equipment? How much approx. are you looking to spend(for full-gear)? I'm assuming $130 for skates already..

For brand new gear, expect to pay around $130-$200 for skates, $50 for shin pads, $50-75 for pants, $15 for jock, $60 for elbow pads, $100 for gloves, $65 for a helmet.
Some of this stuff you can find used or on sale if you look around.

My advice would be... the less experienced you are, the more equipment you should wear. ;D
Off the top of my head, if you wanted to skimp as much as possible...
Helmet: $40+
Cage/Shield: $30+
Shoulders: $40+
Elbows: $25+
Gloves: $60+
Pants: $60+
Shins: $30+
Socks: $10
Jock+Shorts: $25+
Skates and sticks are up to an individual.
So maybe... $300 + stick and skates.
But I haven't been out and about shopping for a while... so you might be able to find cheap stuff at places like SportMart, etc., whereas places like Cyclone's and Ice Level will be more expensive.
Or you can order online which will be the cheapest, but if you've never fitted your own gear before, you might stab yourself in the foot that way.
Edit: Completely beaten to the punch by SumAznGuy. lol
^^^ The above numbers are pretty bang on.
Though, do keep in mind that THS (for sure) and I think Cyclone (Vancouver) as well offers start up package deals. You may want to inquire about that.
You may also want to look into Sports Exchange in Burrard but I personally like THS, Cyclone (Vancouver) & Larrys in North Van.

All good points, especially about fitting the gear.
If you know what you need, great, but if you don't then it is best to get fitted.
With the gear, you get what you pay for. The cheaper gear is usually a little bulkier, or offers less protection than some of the higher end gear.
The cheaper gear is usually a little heavier too.
My GF tried to order me some gloves off of ebay and when they arrived, there were too small for me. Luckily she managed to sell them for more $$$ than she bought them so she actually made money on the.

But we're talking about newbs. It's also completely ridiculous if they go completely on the deep end too soon. Imagine how ridiculous it would be to see a beginner on RBK 8K helmets with Oakley Ovechkin tinted visors, Easton Stealth hockey stick and graf skates.
I think cheaping out is fine. Hockey is only a potentially dangerous sport which only escalates depending on the skill level of the game you're playing. But considering this pick up group in question, I really find it hard that one will get seriously injured. Other than the odd bruises or sore mucles.

Everything in moderation. It would be an extreme to see a noob in RBK 9K pump skates, with a 9K OPS, and all the other high end 9K/NHL equivelent gear but it happens.
That being said, I spent a bit of money on new gear this year and some of the lower end stuff I tried on just wasn't worth it. It was a fine balance between lightweight/flexability vs protection. I ended up going with the Reebok pro-returns. They offered way better protection than any other pants that I tried on.
As for shin pads, the last ones I bought were $30 on sale at sport chek. First game I ended up cracking the left knee shell. I also cracked the right one 2 months later.
BAsically, what I meant to say is don't go for something based on the lable or the price. Somewhere in the middle should be a happy medium for protection vs ease to play in.

I won't be able to join until Dec 13th at the earliest. This sat I'm busy. So I have some time to get some stuff. I've been contacting whomever at the email provided. So I got some info. They don't have anything for rental so I gotta buy the whole collection of gear most likely. I can skate pretty decent with some speed, but I can't "hockey stop" and I can't shoot.
But December is "hell" month. gf birthday, anniversary, christmas. I don't know if I can fork up the $300 for hockey gear as well all within one month.
BTW, don't you guys play on a regular league or some club? Overqualified? haha

I don't play with this group, so you are safe from my cannon, for now. ;)
Since you've never played before and money is an issue, try looking at some of the used gear/consignment places.
Or ask people to borrow unused gear.
Even if you had the money, it's not wise to spend $300 on gear to use it twice before you realize it isn't as much fun as you thought.

i'd suggest you to stick and puck and see how you like skating with a stick in your hand and shoot around for a bit. there's usually some beginners there doing the same but there's an abundance of good players there as well so dont feel too discourage if you decide to try it. if stick and puck piqued your interest even more in ice hockey then you should go and invest in some gear

What exactly is Stick and Puck?
Is it a drop-in thing to practice puck handling and shooting and stuff?
Is full equipment required?? Is equipment rental available? etc
Where can I find more info about the pricing and all that stuff.

Think of it like public ice skating, except everyone has a stick and a puck to play around with. The only requirements are gloves and helmet, and you're not allowed to organize a game(s).

Richmond Ice Center is the best. 9am to 3pm.
Otherwise 8 rinks, but I don't recommend it.
Richmond is the best and the only place you should go for stick and puck! It's only $5.55 and you get to have 6 hrs of ice time.

this is 8-rinks, but more or less its usually 10:30-12:15 and again at 2:45-4:15 every monday-friday.. Saturday has the morning skate, but i would not recommend it because they are alway full... they max out at 24 people and 24 on the ice at once there really isn't much room to move. Weekdays average about 6-10 skaters.
It's $8 at the moment. And they require helmet and gloves
Richmond runs one also
think its 9-3 at $5-$6, but you should call them before heading down there because i personally haven't found an online schedule for them yet.
Theres probably more out there but those are the ones i go to.
as for the pick up, went to it this week and i find its a good place to get some confidence with the puck and just try somethings out while in a quasi-game environment.

Depending on where you work, I do believe Brittania has a stick and puck session on fridays starting at 12 noon.
I've been contemplating of bringing my skates and going to stick and puck as I can take a 2 hour lunch on fridays. Sure beats going to chinatown and eating a big lunch.

Just a warning, it's not about how early that time slot is, it's how early you want to get to stick & puck. You could show up 30 minutes early and be out of a spot as they only have a limit of 24 and you're competing with other stick & puckers who are showing up early for a spot. Burnaby 8 is notorios for being busy.
I don't bother with it as it's almost a competition to get in. If you want to go for a guaranteed stick & puck, you should go to your friends pick up games (or like the pick up posted by the OP).
Usually there's a 10 - 15 minute warm up before a game starts which you can use for stick & puck. I'd say just bring a glove and a helmet and at least you get a goalie to shoot around a bit. Do this enough or for a few weeks and eventually you'll get the hang of it or confidence to play a pick up game. :)

From the looks of it, the stick and puck session schedules don't match up with mines. Only 8 rinks does, but everyone said it's too crowded there. I probably won't bother with stick and puck then. The only thing that actually attracted me was that I only needed minimal equipment to be able to participate, and all I really want is just to skate around and handle a puck.
I am noob with the equipment too though, so I probably don't exactly know how to put everything on properly. Well, I'm pretty sure everything's self explainatory. I'm not at the "hockey" sport. Just that I have never put anything on before, and I could imagine an embarrassing situation when somethings put on backward or something's hanging out.
For these pick-up games the OP posted, everyone there has full equipment more or less, right? It would seem silly to come for the 10-15 minute warmup and pay $15. Unless I can do it for free? :D
I'll go look at some gloves and sticks during my lunch break at sportchek. If I can get my hands on some stuff, maybe I'll be able to join you guys on dec 13.

Which way do you shoot and how tall are you?
I have a bunch of left handed sticks that I don't use anymore and would be perfect for beginner's. Only down side is I am like Wellwood, and play with a short stick.
As for gear, it is really hard to put it on wrong. It's not like you are going to wear a jock around your face like a facemask.
If you really wanna go cheap, set yourself a budget and stick to it.
I'd say $100 for skates.
$30-50 for shin pads. $50 for pants.
$50 for elbow pads. $15 for jock/gater belt combo.
$10-15 for socks, and $30 for a practice jersey.
$50 for helmet and $30 for a cheap cage.
$50 for gloves and $20 for a cheap stick.
Things I have at home if someone is in need of cheap gear.
CCM pants, blue large size.
Old practice jersey's.

I just came back from Sportchek, can't believe I spent over an hour there in the hockey section. Quite overwhelmed by all the different stuff and sizes, considering I know squat. Like how long should your stick be? I tried to remember to take in consideration I will probably be 2 or 3 inches taller with skates. I personally like using shorter sticks for better control. But are you supposed to be arching your back or somethign when you play? For gloves, I found 13.5" to fit snuggly, my fingers right at the tips. 14" felt more roomy but more comfort. I don't know is "roomy" a good thing in hockey though. (btw, the gloves were VIC xcaliber. only $34.99) RBK 1K $90 skates, I'm either size 8 or 9. Once again, 8 fit snuggly, 9 was more roomy. I heard hockey players use small skates though for better mobility?? I think on rollerblades I'm a 8, but I wear 9 in normal shoes.
I guess I should really just ask the salespeople for help, but being at Sportchek with commision, some of those guys really put unnecessary pressure on the customers. Kind of annoying.
I'm very small built.. Picture a typical skinny asian guy. I'm 5'7", most stuff in order to fit me will have to be "S". 32-34" waist or something. I use right handed sticks.. haha no luck there. Can't borrow your stick. I could use practice jerseys (as long as they have been washed ;) ) but I have a feeling they may be too big for me. But how much bigger should a jersey be than your normal shirt size, to compensate for all that gear you have on.

Going from memory, some of the high end gear without any discount (just for the sake of number crunching)
Pump 9K skates $580ish
9K shin pads $100
Pro RBK pants $200
Jock/socks $35ish
Pro-grade gloves $200
Pro-grade shoulder pads $150
9K helmet $100+
9K elbow pads $100
9K OPS $250
Oakley Visor $85+
And this is all before tax. Approx $1800 before tax to look like a pro. =P
Goalies are a lot more $$$ too.

Are there gonna be a lot of bumping or harder bodychecking?
And how are positions determined? and how much ice time do people get on shifts? etc
barely any physical contact unless u accidentally run into ppl.
ur either going to be a forward of a defenceman and shift will be until ur tired, which is usually around a minute.

theres no bodychecking, but shit happens and thats why you want full gear to minimize the potential damage. Its newbie hockey and people skate with their head down, can't really stop, or can't dance around people so again shit happens. Bumping into each other on the other hand is different because its part of the game. People will battle for the puck and that sometimes means having to touch each other.
you just play were you want... no one really plays positions during pick up anyways. I never saw anyone covering the point :P You usually divided into fowards or defense, thats if you have enough people otherwise you just roll the bench.
The amount of ice time varies depending on how many per side (if theres only 5 people then you're never getting off :P)

Usually, comfirm there is a spot for you, and then pay when you show up.
If you comfirm there is a spot for you and you no show, expect them to ask you to pay anyways because in the end when not enough people show up, the organizer will be out some money. If you give enough notice, they may be able to find someone to fill that spot.

I just came back from Ice Level sports store, and bought all the stuff I needed. Ended up paying $300 for jock underwear, pants, socks, knee, elbows, shoulder pads, and jersey.
I think I spent a bit more in this store than if I just stuck with Sportchek because the stuff they got at Sportchek are more mid range and cheaper. But I only went to Ice Level because of the store credit I had. And everything's final sale too. But I guess it's hard to buy stuff bit by bit in each store because I wanted to know how everything felt when I wear all the gear together.
Anyway, I'm glad that's done, and pretty excited to come out now on Dec 13. I was told to bring white socks/jersey and coloured socks/jersey. But I only got black socks and a black practice jersey. I don't really want to spend another $30-35 right now to get white socks and jersey as well. Is it possible if I just get put on the coloured team or something?
Ppl aren't anal about sock color matching your jersey color so most ppl will only have 2 different colored jerseys and not socks as well. It's best to have a dark and light jersey but for now u can probably just borrow one from someone else or hope to get put on the dark team.

Yeah, socks don't matter but jerseys do for sure. I wear purple socks sometimes, nobody cares. Check out smaller stores like Sports Exchange for good deals and specials.
Is it possible if I just get put on the coloured team or something?
Yes it is possible.
Other than that, you don't need socks either. But its good to have a white coloured prac. jersey as well. BTW, prac. jerseys are $10-$20, not $30-$35. So if you don't mind skipping a McDonalds meal or 2, that already pays for your expense right there :D.
It's also a pretty friendly group. So I'm sure if you're put on the "white" team to balance out strength, that some people will have spare white jerseys to lend as most guys come with a "dark" and "white" jersey.

The $30-$35 was from the jersey + socks together. (I've only checked Sportchek and IceLevel and jersey's were going for $20)
But I guess I won't be needing any more socks now. I got a plain black one.
Tried to get black ones with white/gray stripes but they didn't have ones my size.
I got a black/white theme going on, since I bought my gloves first and they were black and white, I just continued on with the theme. haha
Saw your info, says you're in Vancouver.
Here's a quick look at Cyclone Taylor's located at Oak & 49th.
http://www.cyclonetaylor.com/practicejerseys.html
All colours are going for $13.
I've been to Sports Exchange in Burrard St. and The Hockey Shop in Surrey and they are roughly around the same price, give or take a dollar or 2.

Damn... I better go check these places out. Or I might have to wear a pink jersey on Saturday.
Damn, that sucks. I paid $20 for my black jersey at IceLevel.

Go buy a blank white jersey from Wal-Mart. I think it's around $10, $15 max.
And to rant about Sportchek again I would never buy my gear from there unless you know how you want your gear to fit and 100% know the product you're buying. If you are starting out I would pay a bit extra and get fitted at a real hockey store instead of asking some Sportchek employee questions, who most likely has probably never been on the ice in his life.
Buying gear can be pretty cheap if you know where to look. Some gear I will only buy brand new, but for certain things like visors, gloves or sticks I don't mind buying used. I bought some brand new pro stock Tampa Bay Lightning Tackla 5000 pants and they only cost me $110. You could only get a mid-end pant at that price if you don't shop around.

what is ice604 div 5 = to in ashl?
what is ice604 div 5 = to in ashl?
Nothing. Div 5 is wayyy too low a division to have an ASHL comparison.
Willinder
02-23-2009, 01:37 PM
so its lower than 18 in ashl?
Wilso09
02-23-2009, 02:07 PM
Yeah, I think Div. 5 Ice604 is lower then anything in ASHL.
p.s.-The MTB and SPH game wasn't too goonish, I had fun...haha

what is ice604 div 5 = to in ashl?
I was playing on a Div 11 (13 Divs in total) team in summer ASHL last year at 8 Rinks. We were short a few players one game so I asked my buddy to sub for us (he plays Div 2 Ice604.) He says the skill level in Div 11 ASHL is better than the skill level in Div 2 Ice604.
Wilso09
02-23-2009, 05:00 PM
I played some games w/ an ASHL team durring this Fall/Winter season in Div 9 and I wouldn't say all the players are extreamly good, but they work very well as a team. ICE 604 Div 1/2 have some pretty talented individual players, but team-wise there isn't a team that can really compare.
That's the diffrences I noticed between 604 and ASHL at least.
RayBot
02-23-2009, 07:29 PM
Yeah, I think Div. 5 Ice604 is lower then anything in ASHL.
I thought Div 5 for 604 was the womens/co-ed division????
Wilso09
02-23-2009, 10:17 PM
I think it is the co-ed division.
Keroleen
02-24-2009, 08:14 AM
I think it is the co-ed division.
it is a purely MEN's league...just there is a certain team that has a lot of females that play
As for ASHL the skill level is higher than that of Ice604..the only other league lower in skill level for than 604 is VACHL (but i would NOT recommend this league).

I think it's only a matter of how much time you put in. You're not gonna be hotshit right away but you gotta play out your transition period.
I'm guessing you do not know how to stop on ice? or stop in both directions?

balancing is a little more difficult going from fat wheels with more surface area to a thin blade and yes, stopping is a little bit of a problem
balancing is a little more difficult going from fat wheels with more surface area to a thin blade and yes, stopping is a little bit of a problem
If you can balance on rollerblades, i think you can balance on ice skates for sure. The balance and technique is the same in principle. It's just the thinner blade requires for you to have stronger ankles or else your ankles will cause you to wobble. Stronger ankles = less wobble so I don't think you'd have a prob. technique-wise.
Stopping I'll agree takes a while to learn. Memorizing the proper weight distribution is a bitch. It was a tough experience when I had to learn stopping on my opposite side long ago.
