Off the top of my head:

The Viridi-Anne
Julius
Diet Butcher Slim Skin
Comme des garcons
Lad Musician
Yohji Yamamoto
Number(N)ine
Undercover
Junya Watanabe

These aren't Japanese brands per se, but the same crowd may be interested in:

Martin Margiela
Ann Demeulemeester
Rick Owens
Raf Simons
Dries van Noten
Dior Homme

Wings and Horns. Local company whose main designer lived in Japan for I believe 7 years and his pieces have been inspired by Japan's fashion. I love the attention to detail and construction of this brand.

I remember buying their clothes since the early 90's. Although I have to admit they're not quite as good as they used to be now... Their clothing style changed quite a bit and a lot more pricey (still cheaper than normal standards) than before.

yeah im on the same boat as OP, i dont have any feel for what most people here wear, nor the sufu style or livestock kind of stuff, though some of it is nice. I just feel that what people are catching onto here is like 10 years late compared to japan/hk/tw etc....

Has online stores (will need a proxy to actually buy anything) for most of the popular "select shops" like Beams, American Rag Cie, United Arrows Beauty & Youth, etc. Mainly labels you see in Men's Non-no

Fenom is it's own brand. They just did (tons of) collabs with Levi's, doesn't mean they're from Levi's

Pardon my ignorance, but what do you mean you "will need a proxy to actually buy anything"? You can't just buy it regularly, requires some kind of special trick? TIA

Alot of japanese stores do not ship overseas or accept internation ccs, so you will need a japanese resident to purchase it for you, then send it to you.
many times alot of imported japanese brands are super expensive (viridi anne, julius) and will actually be cheaper if u proxy.

zozo is a good site to get ideas of pieces. but i think with shipping + proxy cost, is just way too expensive.

Check out IE on gastown, they are a great source for modern/contempoary clothing. Many come from Europe and a bit from Japan. You pay a higher price, but is worth it for their material + quality.
