: Fallout3

Just acquired the game today and I was actually pretty surprised that it wasn't half bad. :p

I'm probably the hugest fallout fanboy/nerd and despite the bastardization of the story and complete reworking of most of fallout's key elements I have to say the game is actually good.

Anyone else in here pickup this game yet?

fallout 3 or crysis 2....tough decision...
Not really... since there is no Crysis 2... unless you mean Warhead, in which case it's also an easy solution... Or if you meant Far Cry 2, again, an easy solution. Since the games are completely different genres, all you have to do is answer, do you want to play an RPG or an FPS?

Now Warhead and Far Cry 2 might be a tougher decision (although IMO the answer is Far Cry 2)

Personally I wouldn't waste the money on FarCry 2. IMO the game is only avg at best. If you don't mind 3rd person hit up DeadSpace. Or if the choice must be between FarCry and Fallout I suggest giving Fallout 3 a try. It ain't your typical RPG, alot more action oriented although don't mistake it for a straight up FPS since trailers and vids make some people think this.

Actually I am quite enjoying Far Cry 2. sure, there are a few things that are annoying as fuck, but overall it's a great game. It's sort of like a FPS version of Oblivion or GTA, taking place in Africa (if any of that makes sense ;))

I do a mixture probably half and half. I did buy fallout 3 but I downloaded Far Cry 2. I prefer fallout but I'm a fan boy of the series even though it's not the same developers.

I downloaded Far Cry 2 as well. The game is way over rated. You spend more time driving in this stupid ass game than shooting. Every mission makes you go to random places across the map. "Go to Mike's bar to get your pills" you go there and the jackass there tells you you have to go across the fucking map to a priest to get them. The game honestly just feels like a very very repetitive generic shooter. The voice acting, or should I say reading, is terrible and apparently the readers have no idea what a comma or period means. No idea how this game even got such high ratings. (I'm playing the 360 version btw)

Glad I downloaded it cause I would've cried if I spent $60 on this.

I'm dl'ing FO3 right now (from Steam obviously.........), if I like it I'm gonna go buy it. I just don't wanna support Bethesda's aforementioned bastardization unless its actually good enough to play.

Fallout 2 gets my vote for best cRPG of all time BTW, I loved that shit.

At this rate, it seems both games are a bit overrated... I'm not really sure what I'm getting into then. The games aren't cheap. Fallout costs like $59.99. Most PC games are only $49.99. And I thought these were FPS games, but now it sounds like they are RPG or something??

I'm interested in games like Crysis and CoD4. So if either of these gamee aren't like that, then I guess I just saved myself $100+

ienhz
10-29-2008, 08:02 PM
Far Cry 2 is an action shooter like Crysis/CoD4.

Fallout 3 is more like Oblivion.

That said, I just got Fallout 3 and I'm loving it. The humor is great, especially when doing the GOAT test at the beginning lol. I thought the graphics looked a bit off in the beginning but once you step outside the vault, everything looks beautiful and I'm only playing on a 360 @ 1080p. The VATS thing is great even though I thought it would get annoying.

just downloaded fallout3 for pc but i wont get to play it until i upgrade my video card hahaha. (anyone wanna sell their 8800gt/gts?)

However, i have been playing it on xbox360, and so far i aint that hooked into it yet, mainly because it reminds me too much of oblivion and i never really like that system.
With that say, i will milk this game for a while until i finish 'aquiring' fable2 and deadspace for pc.

offtopic about fallout3's story

In the beginning when you have to escape the vault and you see amilia getting questioned by the overseer and a security guard, i decided to sneak attack them so i can take their loots and possible find something useful. Well.... I used the body targeting system and I shot the back of the overseer's head, and his fucking head FELL OFF. Totally didnt expect that, and Amilia's reaction just totally made me cracked up

huh?

farcry, i've heard very shitty reviews.

fallout 3 is a great series, but i'm not an RPG guy. Oblivion is pure RPG and i just gave up on that shit within the first hour. if Fallout is about the same i woudl kill myself.

i'm acuatlly on dead space and i love that game. it's like bioshock, the ONLY thing that's lacking is the ability to upgrade the amount of skills you have and bioshock = underwater world
daed space = in a space ship, hence the boring / look alike environment

ienhz

Im a big Oblivion and fallout fan and just got FO3. Better than I expected, it really makes you feel you are in the game.

I love the turn-based, matrix style combat system especially i suck at aiming with contoller. It is all over again for me planning out skill points, perks, attribute points just like the good old days. I already started over twice when i get further, you would get out match if you didnt plan out your points carefully, the AI is pretty hard even at normal difficulty.

I actually don't like Bioshock all that much. Maybe it's a combo of eerie setting and my weapons just don't seem sufficient enough. I think I just don't like the weapons actually. Didn't seem like a run & gun type of game so it didn't catch on to me.

I think I'm gonna pass on Fallout3, unless I can get a playable demo. I'm not gonna gamble on it, at least not until prices drop. As for FarCry2, I'm still thinking about it. Seems like a more boring (have to drive a vehicle around more than shoot) version of Crysis, from what information I have collected so far.

I finally finished dl'ing it from "Steam" last night, installed and runs perfectly.
For some reason... I got the Russian copy but theres an "update" for it called Fallout3-Trivium.

Just extract the Trivium files into the install directory and run the "fallout.crack.patch.exe" or whatever its called (its close to that) and then run the game.

Follow these instructions they worked perfectly for me.

-----------------------------------------------
Quote:1. Download any Fallout 3 (Russian/english) 2. Open up 'RUN' 3. Type in: cmd and enter it 4. Type in/Run: [dvd]:\setup /lang=en (replace [dvd] with the drive letter of where the fallout 3 image is mounted on) 5. Wait for everything to install (End will take 10-20 minutes. So don't try closing it out in the thought of it being frozen. Note: This doesn't ALWAYS happen) 6. Download Trivium crack ( http://NO DUMP SITES/files/158258102/FALLOUT3CRACK-TRiViUM.rar ) 7. Extract it 8. Copy it all into Fallout 3's installation folder 9. Run the crack file to install it 10. Go into Data folder (within the fallout 3 installation folder) 11. Select RUSSIAN.esp and rename it to english.esp 12. Run it and enjoy
-------------------------------------------

Oh and BTW, "steam" seems to be running slowly/inconsistently, the seeders are about 1/20th of the leechers so its slow going. Using Vuze I got to a constant down of about 40k-80k tho.

It's called "encumbered", the higher your strength the heavier you can carry. I started over twice already and now I have only 1 STR but 10 on Perception and agilty. I would recommend people put more points in luck it is very important, i now have only 6 on luck but still getting tons of critical hits, cant imagine if you have 10 on luck.

lockpick, medical, science, and explosive are important as well, the wasteland is like a minefield, and you can unarm mines for use, xp or for money.

I just made my first custom weapon which is the shiskabab. Basicly is a faming sword made of motorcycle and oven parts. the thing is quite powerfull and very well designed by the fallout team lol

it's pretty good and it looks amazing, but it's funny.. i always complain about RPG's not being "open-ended" enough, but this Oblivion style of questing doesnt really real me in.. things just seem so scattered and u use up alot of your resources doing one quest, and have nothing left for another

been exploring quite a bit, made it all the way out to the capital building but i didnt grab a checkpoint anywhere near it then fell off an overpass :(

The ones made by Interplay is 10x better compared to Fallout 3. Bathesda just doesn't have the same dark humour and wit that Interplay would incorporate into their games.

I have to agree. This game has the atmosphere and it is fun. Once you really get into it there's a ton of stuff to do and collect, makes you really feel like you're part of the post apoc wasteland, but it just doesn't have the awesome fallout1 or 2 feel or much humor involved. The closest thing in this game was the guy who killed himself cuz he thought he was going crazy hearing kids voices. Aside from that this game is all serious no humor. Oh and don't finish the game.. the ending is so disappointing. 200 endings my ass.. started so strong great gameplay awesome journey to the end.. and total letdown of an ending.

I love all the unique weapons and special armors you can get in the game, I do miss all the humor of the old fallout's tho.

The journey to the end of fallout3 is incredible, then the ultimate ending is by far the laziest and most anti-climatic ending ever conceived for a game of this caliber. Such a shame.

I cannot tear myself away from this game. I haven't looked forward to a game more in as long as I can remember. I loved Fallout 1 and 2, but I really didn't like Oblivion that much. I was worried they would screw it up, but it looks like they did a great job from what I've seen so far. I really have schoolwork to do, but I want to play so badly.... Well I don't suck at games, that's for sure. Especially when first person shooting is involved :)

I think I wasted some points building my character though. Oh well, I can slowly build her back up. It's not hard to the point where I have died yet, or failed any missions. I am just used to having so much extra ammo and health that I NEVER have to worry about it. But in this game, I have to heal and watch ammo.

That's what I thought. FO's SPECIAL system is really important to the gameplay, unlike those RPG games where it doesnt matter if you strength of 1, as long as you have special weapons you rule.

My advice is to replay the game, saves yourself some major pain in the future.

Same, I restarted a character after watching the IGN video. Its true that no matter how well you can aim in FPS games, it wouldn't help much in Fallout 3.

The loot in this game pretty much sucks... All there is is garbage dropped by mobs you kill... All the 'caves' I have explored have no good loot at the end, and you end up just wasting a lot of time, not getting anywhere.

This game is definitely failing to capture my attention. I loved Oblivion too, and although I can see a LOT of similarities, this one just isn't grabbing me for some reason. I guess because there is very little loot progression

I thought the same as well with the amount of junk in the game... til I read about how many of these junks are actually valuable components to weapon creation. I forgot the recipe but tin can plus grenade and other stuff makes a much stronger explosive. Though I am still too low level to do craft anything, I just store all my junks in the locker.

its a wasteland what do you expect? having mob rats shtting gold coins or having enclave armory in every buildings/ruins? The junks are one of the highlight of the game reflecting what you mostly would see in a torn world. This is no COD or CS where you have almost unlimited ammo going rambo style, you suppose to use VATS mostly to conserve your gears thats how they want you to survive.

I need to start doing the quests. I've spent most of my time wandering and killing every mob in sight. I'm halfway to level 14 and I think I've completed maybe 3 quests, I have tons open. The good thing is once I do decide to do them is I can fast travel almost everywhere on the map.

After a few more hours of play (the stupid fire ant quest) I can say with certainty that I don't like this game. I can see why others do (and I gave it MANY chances, I kept coming back to it) but it just isn't fun to play for me. Had a sweet VAT moment, last night. I was on the elevated highway taking out all the raiders along it. I saw a raider from a distance, and he saw me. I took cover behind a barrier, and waited for him. He was fast. As soon as he rounded the corner, I activated VAT to unload half-dozen 5.56mm rounds into his head. In the time it took me to let loose a shot, the raider jumped in the air and whipped out a flame flower, and just as he was about to fire, my second set of bullets were released and exploded his head like a watermelon in beautiful, graphic, gory detail.

I love this game.

to fix your stuff you need to have items of the same type.

Then you hover your cusor over the weapon you wanna repair.. and hit R then it'll bring up the repair menu. Be careful though, to not overwrite a weapon you want to keep with the weapon you're repairing. The weapon that's being repaired is surrounded by brackets. OR you can pay a vendor to repair.

I'm here to introduce you to the best damn cohort, Sergeant RL-3. I was in Tenpenny Tower stealth killing people for lulz when I told him to wait around while I went and looted some corpses I had ganked. After chopping someone's head off, I heard the unmistakable sound of the robot discharging his weapon and the sweet, sweet screams of civilians.

I come out to see Sergeant RL-3 mowing down the occupants of Tenpenny tower while yelling "DIE YOU COMMIE-LOVING BASTARDS." I am impressed but even more so when he tags a running target that's about to exit out the door, blowing his legs clean off. He celebrates by mentioning "ANOTHER GLORIOUS DAY IN THE US ARMY" as he swings around and pops off a woman's head like a champange cork.

His work done, he turns to me and tells me that it's "TIME TO HIT THE SHOWERS". And that, my friends, is why Sergeant RL-3 is a friend of mine

I started the game again, putting a ton of points into Intelligence and Luck. So far fights are going a lot better with VATS. I also focused more on small weapons rather than trying to spread points between two weapon types, and put some into melee to conserve ammo.

It sucks not having high speech and charisma though :(

turbomelon
11-05-2008, 11:33 PM
speech isn't as useful as it was in the old games, there is a speech check but a lot of people cheese the system and save reload until the chances fall in their favor.. and while charisma helps for bartering.. you can just simply.. trade all the stuff you need.. then slaughter your trade target to get the key to his/her supply locker :p. Its all about the perception/intel/agi this time around.

I went small guns and sneak then lockpick.. and you're pretty much an unstoppable killing machine since sneaking crits are insta kills usuallly or at least 50% of the target's hp.

Playing the previous Fallouts helps a bit, though. Stats and their effects, drugs and addictions, combat and crits, etc. Those things have remained almost the same across all the Fallouts.

I finally spent around 1000 caps on the Rock-It Launcher plans. It's quite the fun weapon. It uses junk for ammo, which is laying around all over the place. Decent damage, and half the firing rate of a pistol. It goes good with the bloody mess perk. It's fun to launch plates, like saw blades, at people's heads. It feels kinda wrong to see someone explode in a gory mess when you launch a teddy bear at point blank.

The game is way too easy after you get that stuff. Ledoux's mask, etc...I can use VATS to fire my plasma rifle (the one you get from the android) like 7 times and that rapes anything. I'm level 20 with Grim Reaper so I could take on like 50 deathclaws if I wanted to.

I agree that the game gets really easy once you hit LV20 ...

So where is this vault that has the DLC ... I'm going thru my second playthrough of the game and about where you go into the Citedal now ... I'm already in LV20 ... Love using Lincohn Repeater shooting for long range ... instant kill headshots ... don't even need to use VATS ... only downside is that it uses .44 ammo which you need to stockpile so you can use it on a regular basis ...

Can't wait for the DLC in march when they up the LV to 30 ...

Turn up the difficulty to use up ammo faster. If you have the PC version, download the increased spawn mod.
