Whistler/Blackcomb gondola collapse!

http://www.news1130.com/news/topstor...6_182749_15792

Tuesday, December 16 - 03:27:49 PM Erin Loxam

WHISTLER (NEWS1130) - A gondola tower has partially collapsed on the Excalibur Gondola system a short distance from Whistler Village heading toward Blackcomb Mountain. Reports say some passengers have been trapped inside two gondolas on the mountain, but RCMP say there were no serious injuries.

B.C. ambulance service dispatched six ambulances and an air ambulance following the accident that happened around 2:30 p.m. Two people have been taken to hospital, but Sergeant Steve Wright of Whistler RCMP says the gondolas didn't fall, and they remain on the cables with passengers inside.

Wright says the accident took place near Fitzsimmons Creek, between Whistler and Blackcomb Mountains. Firefighters are on the scene and trying to reach the gondolas and evacuate the passengers. Police say the cause of the accident is unknown.

Better on the Excalibur instead of the Peak-To-Peak.

Sucks to hear... I wonder how high they were, and if they were able to jump down...
Does anyone know exactly how the tower broke?

HAHAHAHA reminds me of riding the gondola up with a Whistler maintenance engineer... he was saying how safe it was because the doors are locked shut to keep people from falling out, so he gave the door a big ol' shove and the sucker just popped right open.

He sat down and stopped talking.

just a thought, but imagine somone with a bomb gets onto the peak to peak and blows up the car fracturing the cable

it would be a 500 foot rope swing with cars sliding along the cable as it fell :S

I know how you feel although I never go as much as before. I remember when I was going to Whistler way back in high school and the Whistler Creek Side had a bunch of chairs fall off killing and injuring a bunch of people. Around the same time, there was a gondola in Switzerland (or some European country) that also fell off. I was pretty paranoid for a while because I never thought it could happen.

Found an old article on the previous Whistler accident:

For all your paranoid potheads, the best time to go is immediately. As soon as the lift re-opens. The lift will be fixed, and tested repeatedly before going back in service again. Then again, with freak accidents, it could just be your lucky day.

I agree with you. I am very afraid of heights so when I'm riding the chair I'm always scared it's going to break. Watching this on the news this morning doesn't really help too much, expecially since they say it was the cause of water getting inside and freezing. We've been having pretty cold weather up here and it's suppose to last at least through the weekend so now I wonder what's to stop this from happening up at Sun Peaks
