I saw this ad on a bus the other day, and thought nothing of it, since the last Donnie Yen movie I saw (Flash Point) was so bad.
But seeing this trailer, it looks like a cool old-school kung fu flick.

Donnie Yen on flash point was one of the few movies that does 'free style' wrestling in the HK market. We all know how we are so used to jacky chan fast fighitng punching in the face, btu Donnie Yen did a decent job introducing a new type of martial arts in flash point. (at least this is what other hongers thought)

The fighting itself in Flashpoint was cool, I liked how he incorporated some MMA and Wrestling moves in there. But there just wasn't nearly enough fighting, and we had to watch some REALLY fucking lame acting to get to the few good fighting scenes.

cool, getting a little tired of these "evil japanese" films tho (even though they make for great actions films)
here's the official website http://www.ipman-movie.com/
Sammo is the "action director" i guess thats the choreographer? oO was certain Yen would want that role for himself
edit: i thought flash point was good, story wasn't bad (considering whats coming out of HK these last few years)

Well, I watched the Mandarin version (dubbed) of the movie. This movie was great. It had a good balance of action and story/plot. I will be buying the DVD or Blu Ray when it's released and hopefully then I can re-watch it in its intended language (Cantonese). This is another great movie that features Donnie Yen and a fantastic one from Hong Kong Cinema.

Actually, they're planning on making Ip Man into a trilogy or franchise...a la Once Upon a Time in China.
They're currently looking for someone to play Bruce Lee for the 2nd movie.

yip men was a great movie, it shadowed a few of the movie back from bruce lee's old plots. (standing up the japanese)
movie was great because the story line was decent and the acting by Donnie was bearable. They really did a lot of research for this movie. they consulted (yip men's son) in this movie. THe ONLY part that was not good abotu this movie was how they made Yip Men like a freaking country hero. Yip Men was simply a guy that loved Wing Chung and started his own practice.
Jet Li did a movie 2 yrs ago called FOK YUN GAP, now he was trying a country hero and a great martial artist. Yip Men was not even close to FOK YUN GAP.

Yep, the fight in the Dojo scene was probably a nod to Fist of Fury. It was also likely a metaphorical representation at how all the Chinese felt at the time of the Japanese occupation.

I saw it! Good movie! Needs subtitles since there are Mainlander and Japanese fighters. If you don't know Canto/Mandarin/Japanese your not going to understand everything.
Flashpoint was a decent guy flick, no plot whatsoever. Just a whole lotta masculinity flexing and some Dragonball style ass kicking! (Bones are harder than bricks apparently )
It's all fun'n games but getting bored of Donnie "I'm the MAN" Yen constantly pummeling the crap out of everyone .. the most injured he's ever got was when he had a trickle of blood on his brow (not to mention he practically went Super Saiyan right after he saw the blood.) when the other dude looks like an eggplant! Not diggin' his GODMODE status in all his movies, at least let the bad guys put up a fight?

lol please, i like how you are trying to defend the Japanese while using a derogatory term for them. IMO the film is not "Anti Japanese" its a reasonable historical re-telling of what happened in China during the 2nd Sino-Japanese war/WW2 era. If you think they're being portrayed in-accurately go read up on the long list of Japanese war crimes during this period.
On a less serious note. One of the better HK films I've seen in a long time, but I'm suspecting the sequel will blow chunks (If they make one).

I'm bringing it up because you're claiming the film is attacking the Japanese, when it's more of a biography about the life of Yip Man during the WW2 Era. Like i said before its a somewhat accurate account of what happened during that time, and ok yeah let's just say that it is a "WE'RE CHINESE, ROAR!! FUCK YOU JAPANESE!" film. Even then it's not attacking the Japanese culture in anyway because thats what happened during the war. If you're saying this movie an 'anti-jap' film then by the same measure you could call valkyrie an anti-german film.
and I brought up the war crimes because you were saying something along the lines of the Japanese being portrayed as evil etc. and you didn't like that. Well guess what, they WERE the ones doing the raping, killing, stealing during this time period. If its a historical re-enactment of the war then yeaa they're gona be a portrayed as evil and yes the people they kill/steal/rape will be a TAD pissed off that they're doing that.
and FYI just because you don't feel a term is offensive to people doesn't mean that its not offensive.

I can read just fine, thanks. You're contradicting yourself here, you say it isnt derogatory then u say a lot of people think it is offensive. And yea if a LARGE group of people think its offensive... it sorta is. What gives you the sole right to decide what is offensive and what isn't?
What you're doing is more like "I can say nigga all i want cause i don't think its offensive at all to black people."
and my angle? my angle is trying to defend a film from you saying its 'anti-jap'. I've offended no one, and I've been using facts to back my shit up. You're the only one spouting slurs and 'bull shitting' here.

this movie was BASED on a real character. Not all the events happened.

If it were priced like Blu-Rays at Futureshop (~$30) I would buy it.

I was quite surprised at the price when I was browsing around MAL's website. If it was around 35 I would definitely consider it. Now I'm contemplating whether to get it. :/

It's cause our dollar dropped. When I bought Red Cliff last summer on blu ray I got it for $35 CAD when our dollar was on par. Sucks now.

Just watched it on Blu-Ray, pretty damn good Kung Fu flick! I was actually not far from Fo Shan last week, I should have gone! Although almost anything related to pre-communism is likely to be gone completely, so I'm sure nobody was able to turn one of the schools into a museum or anything like that.
There were some really stupid parts, some inconsistencies, and downright errors due to the time it was supposed to have taken place, but overall a good action flick. Definitely better than Donnie Yen's last movie.
The one part that really bugged me was the epilogue text at the end. According to this movie, Japan surrendered unconditionally after being defeated in the war by China... Umm what? :lol
The tribute to Ip Man at the end was awesome though.

Alhough he left China not cause of the Japanese but cause of the Communists in real life lol. He was part of the Kumintang. This isn't a spoiler cause it's history.

Yup, and if anything they should have said: Japan surrendered after the war against the Republic of China. And after that, the country was in tatters, and the Communists took advantage and took over the country, successfully brainwashing the people to think otherwise.

good movie!
it is anti-jap in a HISTORICAL sense... really demonized the acts of the japanese during WW2 but the timeframe of the movie is based around that time so wtf do you expect?

Demonizing Japan is one thing. Glorifying Communist China is quite another. Are you sure you understood our posts?

no I don't
how did it "glorify communist china" I think it correctly outlined the sentiment of the time frame, ip man went from living in a lavish mansion to barely getting by with enough to eat, alongside everyone else that was chinese who didnt sell themselves out to the japanese

am i missing something?
It's a movie, based on a person. No where does it say it's historically accurate. Also, due to censorship in china, if they wanted to play their movie there they'll have to accommodate to them. It's just a movie, watch it for what it is, i'm guessing you didn't questioned the accuracy of "DOOM" the movie. They just want to make a few bucks get off their back. If you want a history lesson, go read a history book, and not an action movie.
Oh yea, it's an action movie, to make it exciting they've got to make it somewhat unrealistic. To sell their movie, of course, it'll show him taking and beating 10 guys.
It would be pointless if the 10 guys jumped on him at the same and beat his ass up, the movie would be over.

You guys are missing the point. We weren't bothered by the historical inaccuracies, but to state that China won the war at the end credits is another thing.
That's like the Germans saying Nazis never existed.

China did not end the war itself. The war ended when the United States dropped their atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

I don't mind that they took liberties with his life in the movie itself. But to try to rewrite history in what is supposed to be the "real life" epilogue of the movie just ruined it for me.
Either keep it fiction, or keep it real. Don't try to rewrite reality!
