Optima vs. Odyssey

Hey Guys,

Which car battery do you think I should get for my Honda Civic Si 94'? I'll be running on a lot of accessories and a sound system. Which brand and model should I choose? Optima or Odyssey?

Get the yellow top if you have a system in your car.

I've had mine for over 4 years and its still going strong.

BTW you can get them at Costco for about $156.xx IIRC.

Obviously Odyssey is better, probably one of the best in the world.

Optimas won't stand a chance if you compare them with Odyssey, they have much better dry cell technology.
The U.S. Air Force use them and I believe the army use them as well for the military vehicle because they seriously need reliable betteries.
If I'm not wrong, NASA use the Odyssey as well.

Optimas have problems with shocks/vibrations and they're well over-rated. I mean they're still good(still dry cell right?), I have yellow top in my car, but definitely not the best one in the world. Not that I need really good battery anyways.

If you look at exotic cars and race cars, you won't see Optima, they're not good enough. Also Optimas have problems with weight, they're really heavy. oh btw, Bugatti use Odyssey and Lamborghini use Deka.

If you're looking for a dry cell battery, look for Odyssey, Varley Red Top, Deka and Pomec.
I would personally recommend Odyssey, but if you're looking for something light-weight Pomec is pretty good too. The F-18 and F-16 fighter jets use Pomec battery as well.

Yellow Top is recommended for sound system. At least the yellow top is deep cycle.

I don't think Odyssey is available in Canada, at least that's what I was told when I went to Lordco. That's why I settled with Optima

Oddessy is a MUCH better battery.

I have an Optima for my old civic. The bloody battery needed to replaced 3 times over the course of one year.

Oddessy has a 3 year replacement. And I have yet to warranty an Oddessy battery. If you have a pretty big system, I definately recommend the Oddessy if you can afford it.

How much are they going for and what model would fit for a honda civic si 94?

wow I didn't know that it was available in Canada...I looked around Walmart, Crappy Tire and Lordco. They told me Odysseys aren't available in Canada. Now I'm depressed.

call Lee @ Federal Battery in Richmond or Rob @ Polar Battery in Burnaby.

They both carry them. And they tend to give pretty competitive pricing. They'll usually match or beat pricing.

Lotsa ppl will say Optima had charging issues, and other defects, esp. the Yellow Top...I had to change mine 2/year...
However in October 2007, I spoke to Optima - www.optimabatteries.com - and they had re-released the Yellow Top again (after a few months off the market)...and fixed the issue.

The problem was the old one were 500-550 CCA (cold charge), and the new ones now are 450 CCA, this change has now fixed the "cant hold a charge after depleting" issue.

I bought a new model one and works great. Good and compatible with my audio/tvs/headlights/SC High boost pulley/high output alternator/and other underdrive pullies.

I've read a lot on Odyssey batteries and spoke to a few suppliers, and they are sure that it matches Optimas as well. Might be interested to try...
I mean...cant judge a product until you have tried it first...

oh but even if the size matches, sometimes your battery have "reverse" terminal.
(- and + are opposite) so watch out for that.

I believe the existing battery you have in your Civic should have the model number...

Ex. 51R, 34U...etc..etc...

Otherwise, contact any supplier and ask them what size is avaialble for 94 Honda Civic.

Good Luck.

^ yeaup it's either a 51 51r or a 34 that goes for both odyssey and optima.

is your battery against the firewall or near the rad support?

Firewall is probably a 51r the rad support one is the 34

So if I look at the home depot website, which one is it? Because there not labeled as, "51." There labeled as PC 545 for example.
