I'm curious if the economic downturn will have an effect on Dine Out this year.

For myself, I've been going to 2-4 each year and plan to do the same again.

For myself, I've been going to 2-4 each year and plan to do the same again.

I think that there are a number of factors that will lead to lower Dine Out sales this year. The economy is one, the other is that Dine Out has really gone off track from its purpose. It originally featured great restaurants offering creative menus at decent prices. Now Dine Out is flooded with mediocre restaurants offering regular menu items at near normal pricing.

BTW by Dine Out sales, I mean by sales figures, not just implied attendance from how busy the restaurants seem.

if you check some of the mediocre restuarants' menu, it might be much cheaper eating on a regular night that dine out event

if you are going dine out vancouver, you better choose the expensive resturants on a regular basis..

you get the best deal on them.

Peanut Butter Jelly Time!

tonnes of people do that now though... especially the taking pictures part.. that i can handle... the yelling not so much.

appropriate behaviour at appropriate places i guess. if you act like a 12 year old at elixir then that won't go over too well with anyone.

ahah.. i know exactly what you're talking about,
(^__^)V

and it's not called the "peace sign."

"V" is refered as "victory."

Please correct me if I'm wrong. I am not a honger!

ah_cat
01-04-2009, 11:05 PM
why the heck would hongers express "victory" at the dinner table?
i don't even think hongers use that to express victory, but it's just a honger thing to do.
"one, two fweee.... cheeeeeese!!!!"

Parkside is always a good choice, one of my "impress someone" restaurants. I am Actually heading there next weekend but not to impress this one lol just to eat.

I am not a huge fan of dine out, but a little disappointed to not see chambar on the list this year.

Made reservations with Gastropod, DB Bistro Moderne and Seasons in the Park. Hope they turn out to be good!

FYI, Gastropod's Dine Out Vancouver menu starts on January 7th

All of those restaurants blow, especially gastropod because it's super pretentious, season's in the park is meh.

REMEMBER IF YOU ARE GOING TO A NICE RESTAURANT, JUST BECAUSE IT'S DINE OUT DOESN'T MEAN IT'S OKAY TO WEAR JEANS AND A FUCKING T-SHIRT OKAY?

Any other good recommendations? I've no experiences with most of the restaurants. I'm a red meat person, and have tried Aqua Riva, Pinky's for their steak. I've made a reservation at Joe Fortes because I LOVE oysters and there's a steak entree too.

Pinky's steak was pretty good, but not worth it imo. I wasn't feeling the caesar salad too (made with hearts, not chopped romaine). After alcohol and appies it was like 70 bucks. Thinking about it, not worth it. But it's good.

The only thing that eased the hit on the wallet? The "scenery", if you know what I mean :haha:

This was in Yaletown btw, so that part is pretty self-explanatory.

Got: Quattro on Fourth, Yew, Il Guardino, Raincity Grill and Cobre

Don't go to C's!!!!!! I went there last year and the portions were so small!!!! Other standouts were Bacchus and CinCin's. My friend went to Gastropod before and it was good as well.
No Chambar!! :( I went last year and it was really good!!

not sure. when i went on a saturday night the yaletown one was pretty busy but not crazy. since they have a pretty good deal going on for DO i can't really say for sure. I'd imagine it'd be pretty busy though since it is one of the only ones thats first come first served.

Heads up booking for Valentines, wanted to reserve two seats at Joe Fortes for Feburary 14th but it was all taken as well as the days before and after it.

6793026
01-07-2009, 08:40 AM
nu is not bad, i like it when i was there last year.
West is well worth the trip if you ever get seating.
Pinky's... is an intersting one. there are a lot of good steak houses so unless someone is paying, i wouldn't go to Pinky's. it's not worth that much for a steak.

cincin is an italian restaurant and i'm not a big fan of just pasta and stuff.
quattro is really nice. if u go there and get their platter, it's a great appetizer.
baccus was really really amazing when i went. i would go to them again, not as famous as other restaurant so that's why.
C: i can totally see how the portions would be very very little.

I gotta admit, the taking pictures thing, really bugs me too. I'm also guilty of doing it but I try to do it at casual places. I really think it looks cheesy when you're at a fine dining place and you're sitting there, snapping pictures of everything you're eating.

^Went there for a b-day party last year. They did like a 12 course sampler kinda deal which turned out better, portion-wise, then I thought. The food was pretty good. Haven't looked at the DO menu but I'm sure I'd give it a try.

Last time I went there, the bill was near $400. Two appys, two entrees, dessert, and a bottle of wine.

Best Entrée: Maurya Indian Cuisine
Best Dessert: Savoury Coast Cucina Mediterranea
Best BC Wine Pairing: The Cannery Seafood Restaurant
Best Overall Dine Out Vancouver Menu: Savoury Coast Cucina Mediterranea

I went to 6 places last year.

Haha I'm not in Dine-Out, there's like an expensive membership fee to join. Our dishes are already cheap, it's not gonna be a super deal to put 3 courses for 28 bucks.

Anyways, being in this business I love trying different places!

So far I've got: Gastropod (in before the Official Start of Dine-Out), Pinky's (I'll see how long the wait is, if it's bad I'll eat somewhere else in Yaletown), Lux & Parkside. Nothing else seems appealing this year. I would of liked to go to Lumiere's or Chambar but they aren't in it. I guess it isn't worth it for them either.

I went to Yaletown Pinky's the first month it opened last year, I thought it was pretty good. Steak was cooked perfect, caesar salad wasn't anything special, but the steak was great. The only thing that really dampened the experience was this odour in the place that smelled kind of like piss.

Okay I can’t understand why Pinky’s keeps showing up on this tread have any of you been to their website? Or am I missing something?

I had a quick dinner there for new years and the meal was fine not wow by any means. If you compare their dineout menu to their normal menu its actually regular prices, If you pick certain combinations dine out is the same if not more expensive. Go on a normal day.

http://www.brownsrestaurantgroup.com/pinkys/assets/menus/pinkys_dinner_menu.pdf
On the Normal Menu $28
- Sirloin Steak 7oz or Marinated Teriyaki Sirloin Steak 7oz, with a ceasar salad, your choice of tomato linguini or fettuccini alfredo. Finished with a scoop of chocolate ice cream in a silver dish.

2) West is not the most expensive restaurant in the city or the best; yes there has been a number of write ups saying that it is the best but unfortunately not everyone has the same taste.
I have been to West a handful of times, never for dine out but I did try their prix fix meal.
The food was good the service was impeccable but so were other meals I have had at other restaurants.
There are many restaurants that you can rack up the bill over 4 bills without going crazy on the alki So Trinity if you want a reservation at West, I can probably get a friend to sell you their for not 300 but how about 250? A special deal for you since you’re a RS regular lol.

Deon good choice with parkside and lux, if you want to hit up chambar sometime let me know. Good place and the owners are really nice. PS. I still dont see Ducky's on the drink menu, only on the computer!!! lol

PS. I still dont see Ducky's on the drink menu, only on the computer!!! lol

if you guys go to chambar.. i am in as well... omg.. their beef tartar is to die for.. hahaha... well and their usual mussels are good too ! lol !!!!

i heard gastropod wasn't that great...

Personal experience wise....Hamilton Street Grill was not that good. I went during Taste of Yaletown and I thought the steak was just ok. I had asked for medium rare but when it was served it tasted a bit over done. The appetizer and dessert was defniitely better then my steak entree.

I am interested in trying Pinkys for dine out but since it's first come first serve I am not sure if it will be hard to get a table.

Well I finished my first Dine-Out already, Gastropod.

$38 Underwhelming. 2/5
We shared a couple plates

Restaurant is small, nothing spectacular. The patrons give off a pretentious vibe in there. (only 2 tables of customers too)

Server didn't even know how to open the Red in front of us, strange considering it's an upper scale restaurant.

Appy:
Best-> Beef Tartar - Pretty good, nice smooth texture with good flavour
Raw Oysters - Pretty standard, fresh with subtle sauces. Didn't understand why it's another +$3 on top of the DO price for just 3 pieces though..

Main:
Worst-> Pork Shoulder - The pork was very dry, tough and chewy with no flavour. Relied heavily on the sauce it came on top of. Mashed potato side.
Fried Salmon - The salmon was pretty good, nice tangy wasabi sauce but the rice it came on was hard and very weird tasting

Dessert:
Assorted Cheese (another +$5, ugh) - Can't go wrong with cheese because I dont really like sweets haha but the Blue Cheese is blah!
Chocolate Fondue: Chocolatey goodness! My gf liked it, so saucy, too sweet for me haha.

Went to Joe Fortes last night and it was excellent and beyond my expectations. I had the oysters sampler for my appetizer and the bf had the chowder. The oyster sampler had 4 different kinds of oyster and each one had a distinct favor. My bf's chowder was really rich and creamy with lots of different ingredients.

We both chose the steak and prawns as our entree. Our steak and prawns was delicious as well. It was cooked exactly the way we wanted (medium rare) and the portions was bigger then we expected.

He had the creme brule as dessert while I had the chocolate lava cake. Both our desserts weren't too sweet so we both enjoyed it.

aww .. I should have booked at Joe too. Their regular eating menu is so expensive, like $20 for half a dozen oysters .. and I love Oysters .. would probably end up spending $60+ on Oysters alone at Fortes and still not be satisfied! Then I would need an entree .. hehe

sorry i was tired last night. lol. here's my Aqua Riva review.

service was very good. attentive and good timing. no complaints.

I ordered the scallop and prawn spring rolls. Were good, especially the salad part. The spring rolls were clearly something made in advance though and heated. Outside were more chewy than crispy. And they used a lot of black pepper that overpowered everything else.

For dinner I had the striploin with horseradish & scallion mashed potatoes and stilton & walnut jus. I ordered medium rare, but it came more on the rare side. It was also not really warm enough to my liking. Not cold, but not warm enough. But I wasn't going to send it back or anything. The wine suggestion I had was good. The mashed potatoes were okay, but not really mashed enough (there were lumps)

For dessert I had a cheesecake. It was good. Satisfied with that.

All in all, I wasn't TOO disappointed, only because the price was reasonable. You get what you pay for I suppose. But I've been here before lots of times and have had way better meals.

7/10. Maybe 7.5/10.

+1 for Joe Fortes
I had the clam chowder, steak and tiger prawn, and the chocolate lava cake.
It was one of the best dine outs I've had imo.
I'm not a fan of oysters, but my friends had them and were very happy with it.. wanted more of those in fact.. :D
Chocolate lava cake wasn't as hot as I thought it'd be, came out lukewarm, but it wasn't that sweet, so it was a big plus for me.

I had the boathouse lobsterfest 3 course as well.. that's worth going for.
I had the lobster bisque = a bit salty imo, steak with lobster thermidor, and wine instead of a dessert. It's only $34.99 pretty decent imo~

Not sure if you guys have ever heard of this place... but I went to Tomato Fresh Food Cafe (Broadway & Bayswater) tonight and it was wonderful. They serve all organic..for all the organic lovers out there.

Only downside is that the portions may not be enough for the guys.

Had the butternut squash tortellini - was really nice and creamy, balance of the sweet butternut and the lemon chive beurre sauce was perfect. Prawn was very big.

Entree was the beef tenderloin and with a medley of potatoes, parsnip, green beans and truffle oil... portion was quite small.. my friend tried the arctic char and I'd actually recommend getting the arctic char - bigger portion, great flavour and the basmati cake was a nice pairing to the fish.

For dessert I had the chocolate tart with earl grey ice cream. Both desserts were awesome!!! Very good in portion and both were delicious.

They didn't rush us, the service was good and the atmosphere was good. I'd def. recommend for the people who thought of trying it and wasn't sure.

8.7/10

I had the candied salmon salad, and i loved it. my date had the springroll. i too, did not like the outside. was not crispy. Inside was as you said -- a little too much black pepper, but i found it tasty still.

I had the steak as well, medium rare. I didn'tcare for it either. The other main was the sablefish, which she said tasted 'okay'.

I had the bread pudding dessert, and liked it alot. cheesecake is cheesecake to me.

OMG!

just came back from Joe Fortes, oh man, it was like 9.5/10
i didn't expect much from the beginning because i didn't want to get dissapointed and say "Keg was better"

after tonight, i can proudly scream "Keg is not the best (to me)"

went with my gf, reservation was for 830, got seated by 9
it was hell busy tho.

appy: oysters (nothing special)

entree: steak and prawns, steak was AWEEEEEESOME like AWEEEESOME, i would go back for it. Prawns lived up to its word.. white places call their "tiger prawns, or sea blah blah blah prawns" it always turn out that it's some safeway small shrimp. but man, Fortes used BIG prawns that you find @ asian places, not the biggest i have eaten, but pretty big. like the length of an iphone big, and 2 fingers thick. the mash potatoes were weak tho, but i was there for the steak.

dessert: meh, i don't like any kind of dessert, except icecream, so i don't have an opinion.. but i did eat half just because its $38

overall, the service was pretty good.. all the staff dressed like lab researchers tho.. with their white lab coat LOL

and it was pretty disgusting seeing the glass washing machine... they just put the used glass into the machine, and the other side comes the "cleaned" ones and they would just use them. its NEVER been rubbed, its just a conveyor belt, like those touchless carwash!!! =S

anyways, it was worth $38 and the best experience i have had in terms of "high end" restuarants. all the other experience i had with high end restaurants has been garbage, this was AWESOME!

btw, they have that steak menu for $28 starting feb3.. 3 course menu too!

I'd have to agree with Eff-1's thing.

7/10 for me

Steak was undercooked and wasn't exactly warm, the walnuts though was a nice added taste and texture. I had the couscous soup which was nothing special. Mash potatoes this time was good around for me. Cheesecake was cheesecake.

The service was really the only reason that it got the mark it did. It really wasn't anything special.

Went to Aqua Riva friday night 7.5/10 wasn't really a spectacular place in terms of food or service, hence the 7.5

Appetizers
I had the scallop and shrimp spring rolls, unlike Eff-1 mine didn't have the strong overpowering black pepper taste and she outside of my spring roll was nice and crunchy (this was really the saving grace of the meal for me). the 2 others i was with had the salmon salad, man that salmon was almost like salmon jerky lol.

Entree
2 of us had the steak, the other had the trout. I ordered the steak medium rare, it came out more rare than i had expected. I really didn't care for the steak too much though as it came out rather tough and too chewy for my liking. The mashed potatoes that came with the steak was good though, tasted like they had sour cream in there perhaps? and the green onions mixed in were a nice touch. I liked the way the veggies were done in strips too, felt like i was eating noodles instead of veggies lol. The trout was actually quite tasty though.and wasn't over cooked

Dessert
epic small portions.. lol i had the raisin pudding and the 2 others had the white cheesecake. cheesecake was really soft and the texture was not what i was used to at all, however it lacked flavour IMO. I liked my raisin apple pudding as the flavours were much stronger and i could distinctly tell what flavours there were (apple, raisin a little bit of caramel).

Presentation & Service
Overall the presentation of the restaurant and food were pleasing to the eye. The restaurant itself had several pillars though which blocked the view of certain areas, but it had a high enough ceiling for me not to feel claustrophobic and if it were not foggy, our view by the window would've been excellent. Service however was nothing special, infact our server was never really sure which side she should serve/take from which caused her reach to be sometimes quite awkward. the service was not particularly friendly either which is what i meant by nothing special. I wouldn't mind going back here if other friends wanted to, but I would personally not take any initiative to go.

Open kitchen/big copper roof on the top floor...
Bottom is like a private lounge type..

This would be a kick-ass place to live..make a nice loft. Studio in the bottom, bedroom/living room/kitchen up top.

http://www.tourismvancouver.com/visitors/dining/dineout.details.php?id=696

The following was typed up at like 2am and copied from my facebook..so if it reads a bit funny to you, I'm sorry. I'm also not a real foodie, so...yea. Anyways, enjoy pictures. :)

Although portions are small (well it is tapas style, and I'm going to guess that it's also because of DOV), the food is definitely huge on flavour.

Service wise..the host/my server was very....snobby. Had this whole attitude thing going on all night, barely smiled, had his nose up the whole time.. a very big turn off for the restaurant. I understand that it's DOV, and it's busy, and it sucks, but you should still put a presentable and friendly face on to your paying customers. The other servers were nice.

The place, well. It's very cozy. The decoration seems very mismatched, a whole slew of styles. Western, modern, industrial...The table we sat at was kind of awkward, it was shaped like a leaf.

Patagonia battered Baja rockfish taco
chipotle ajo aioli

Crispey fish tacos. Hmmm....not very much wow like the duck taco.

Didn't get a picture of the 3rd one,
"Roasted Poblano y Oaxacan queso fresco taco
nugget potato y sunchoke".

Pan roasted BC sable fish
peruvian olive roasted poblano causa, patacones y chimichurri

The fish didn't taste cooked in the very middle, it was still a little soft. Somehow, I don't think that's intentional, but it was still good. Only had one bite of the fish, and half of the plantain on the bottom. Around it was.. like pesto, but made with cilantro instead.

http://photos-e.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-ak-snc1/v2080/198/68/1637790023/n1637790023_117700_7904.jpg

Vaca asada, char grilled flat iron steak
tijuana baby caesar y chorizo buttermilk mash

So drool worthy. Thin slices of steak, over two small leaves of romaine lettuce, caesar style, on top of a mashed potatoes..I didn't taste the chorizo though.

This was probably the most food on one plate compared to the others.

I didn't get a picture of the 3rd entree,

Goats milk vanilla bean cheese cake
roasted hazelnut argentinian alfajores, lemon curd

A very smooth and dense cheesecake, you can definitely taste the goats milk. Separated by I think a piece of shortbread..one side had lemon curd, and the other with crushed hazelnuts.

Perfect combination with the lemon curd.

Ancho chili chocolate pecan brownie
horchata white chocolate ganache, cinnamon stewed banana

Nutty brownie. It wasn't as spicy as I expected/wanted it to be, but you get a tinge of it.

http://photos-b.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-ak-snc1/v2080/198/68/1637790023/n1637790023_117705_8845.jpg
Dulce de leche, caramelized pineapple, tamarind butterscotch
espresso churro

CHURROS. Seriously, I love churros yum.
Dulce de leche is..well to me, it's basically soft melty caramel. Yummy. Take a bit of it with the above cheesecake, and it's 10x better. Caramelized pineapples on top, but you can't really taste it since the leche is so strong.

One last thing bout the desserts, I love that they put a gooseberry on each, it really helps to accentuate flavours since it opposes the sweetness with it's tartness/sourness.

welcome to fine dining

Excuse me? Read the thread, I'm sure I dine out at fine dining establishments way more than you do.

I hate places that put tiny pieces of food, doll it all up on your plate, and serve it to you and charge you out the wazoo for it though.

Had dinner at Parkside last night, and even during DineOut Parkside has yet to disappoint me. Too lazy to go into much detail...we had the following:

-A bottle of D’ Arenberg Custodian Grenache 2005, a very easy drinking red wine. The same bottle I always order at Parkside, but I believe previously it was an '02.

Appetizers:
-Clear tomato minestrone, goat cheese ravioli: Good portion, nice and light. You could def. taste the goat cheese.
-Gulf prawns, orange, fennel, pork cheek bacon, black olive: Okay but portion was too small.

Mains:
-Saddle of rabbit, mushroom duxelles, petit pois, Parmesan sauce: Extremely tender and flavorful, it was parmesan foam rather than sauce and worked perfectly with the rabbit.
-36 hour low temperature short rib, horseradish pomme purée, Yorkshire pudding, onion rings, beef jus: Good dish.

Dessert
-Lemon tart brûlée: Nothing much I can say other than a good lemon tart.
-Sorbets: blood orange & campari, mango & basil, yogurt & vanilla: All were good but our favorite but the yogurt & vanilla.

We were there for almost 3 hours, we did not feel rushed and the service was attentive and courteous.

Hmm, good point. After taxes & 15% tip, it's already up to $90+. I think I'll cancel my reservation and do something else.

Hahaha just looked at Hon's - my god 2 people could eat there for $18, INCLUDING tax & tip! :D

Hahaha, good choice. I don't get why the hell would people pay that much for food and they'll most likely shit it out within 24hours. That's a really expensive shit.

Anyone planning on going to Joe Fortes please beware. I went there on Thursday and had their oyster sampler appetizer. On Saturday, I had the worst food poisoning i've ever experienced in my life. Today is day 4 and i'm still out of commission. Two others I know who also had the same appetizer on either the same day or the day after had the same symptoms I did. I guess that's the risk you take by eating raw oysters!

I'm a bit disappointed because I did quite enjoy the dinner a lot. The tuna was a little dry on the outside but the mac and cheese was delicious!

I have another DOV reservation tomorrow night at Lift, hope I have my appetite back by then.

Went to Yew at four seasons last sunday.

Appy: Sablefish with miso, the fish was prepared perfectly the fish was just done and had the soft flaky texture and the miso or soy sauce gave it a sweet aftertaste.
Main: Angus sirloin, i had to pay 12 bucks more for it and i was expecting a 6 ounce steak, when a steak arrive it was massive at least 10 ounce. It was done to my liking and the fat was mouth watering. The steak was already removed from the bone and made cutting it a lot easier. Came with bone marrow mash potato and grilled wild oyster mushroom and spinach, the spinach was insanely salty.
Dessert: Chocolate thing, tasted like almond roca, which was a pleasant surprise.
had a bottle of wine that the server had suggested with the food.
I think it was a riseling with the fish and a merlot with the steak.

food: 9.5/10
Service: 9/10

Went to Cru the other night as it was sold out.. so naturally I was curious and found a reservation.
I don't know if the cuisine is not my type or not.. but it was just mediocre imo.
My friend was unhappy until the dessert.. -_-?
The sweet potato soup was very sweet, I only tasted it but it was a strange taste, not what I'd prefer for a soup. I had the beef carpaccio which was pretty good.
I had the crispy duck confit.. which wasn't too bad, except the salad/pasta mixture underneath had some sour taste to it.. maybe vinaigrette? that I didn't enjoy. My friend had the seared albacore tuna, which she said that had a fishy taste of not being fresh. (side note: apparently the seared tuna at Joe Fortes is really good)
The chocolate torte was good.. really rich and sweet though so I couldn't finish it.
Overall, I don't think it'd be a place I'd frequent.. as the place is really small. The service wasn't up to par and
parking is a bitch. >.<

sorta not really bias. Use to work there but never sat down and ate.

the spring rolls were awesome. the salmon salad was alright. but i'd say choose the spring rolls over the other two. i didn't find the spring rolls bad. they fry them to order..

I had the trout. Gf had the steak. i'd suggest if you want the fish go with sable fish. It has a much richer taste. but not over powering like salmon would be. The steak imo was perfect.

for dessert go with the bread pudding. its the only way to go. the cheese cake is like any other cheeese cake.

btw. all cheese cake is made the day before and frozen. then unfrozen the next day. its never "fresh".

oh yes the service is always great. Everyone is uber nice there. even though i know the people who work there, there is no acceptions everyone gets treated well.

I think a lot of you guys need to get over the mediocre service.

A lot of you guys will only go to these places for Dine out, aka you're only useful for January to keep revenue coming in, as a result (most) of you guys are pretty cheap.

The second dine out is over (most) of you won't come back.

As a result the servers don't really care about you. This is all coming straight from some of the owners of the restaurants I know in Dine out.

Dine Out is also a chance for restaurants to impress customers and hopefully retain them. You don't do that with just good food, you need good service too.

Now I understand that yes, DOV is two weeks of hell (or a blessing if you see it from another POV) for the restaurant and especially servers..and I can certainly imagine how busy and stressed they would be.. but to show good service is the best thing one can do during this event.

I've gone back to restaurants I've tried at previous DOV's because I enjoyed the food AND the service.

Very true
For example.. I don't like the menu offerings at Cru and West at all.. but I decided to try them out. I haven't gone to West yet.. but Cru's service wasn't that attentive. We were rushed and overall just felt like I was eating at some regular restaurant. Hence, it's not a place I'd go back. Joe Fortes had good service, and although Lumiere wasn't a part of the DOV.. I went and had very good service there, so I'd return.

For me, DOV is a chance to try out different restaurants for a small price.
While I understand that the quality of the food differs from their regular menu.. the service and setting should be the same in my opinion.. I don't go for the food mainly per se, but for the ambience, service.. the overall feel of the restaurant.

Went to Lux last night for a friend's birthday and it was pretty much a 5 out of 10 for me. Our server was really impatient and not friendly at all. We had questions about some of the items on the menu and she looked like she had way better things to do then to answer our questions. Drinks were overpriced and watered down (I had better at the club after dinner)

The best part of the meal was the appy. Me n my friend both ordered the ahi tuna/avocado tower and both enjoyed it....our entree was a whole other story. She had the beef striploin and I ordered the sablefish. Her striploin was overcooked to the point where it was a lil burned. The sablefish itself was ok but the cream sauce they used was definitely on the heavy side. We both shared the fondue for dessert and again the portion was too small for what is meant to be for two people.

Went to West..
The ravioli was good, although there were only two pieces of it.. XD
The pave of beef was okay.. if you like braised meat.
I don't particularly care for it, so it wasn't superbly appreciated. The mushroom sauce was pretty good though, and sides were good~
The chocolate tower was good, I liked the marshmallow-y like white chocolate layer. >_<

The banana cake is just like a skinny piece of bread with some toppings.. I don't think it's a good choice. As well as the salmon.. It wasn't very impressive looking.. It had the skin on, which I don't like, some might.. and the sauces surrounding it were too sweet for the entree dish. The gnocchi weren't what I was expecting.. tasted like uncooked.... tater tots? (..?) lol

The service was good, I liked the place quite a bit. I can see why it's considered one of the better restaurants~

Went to Fortes yesterday, so far my best DO (Thanks to the reviews on RS :D)
Chowder was good, very hearty and full of seafood!
Fresh Oysters, the ones that came with the DO were mediocre. I had to get another order on the side to curb my oyster craving! Kusshi and Malpeque, those were delicious! (but damn expensive, $20 for 6pcs?! :()

Steak & Shrimp - Pretty in par with what I expected, but I've ate at Hy's & Players Chophouse last week so it's difficult to say I was impressed by this steak!
Albacore Tuna - Not bad, good flavouring with 3 cheese jumbo macaroni which was just saucy enough for every piece but not overflowing nor dry

Creme Brulee - Standard fare, but noticeably more creamy and rich than other places, not to sweet, good stuff.
Lava Cake - Was kinda hard, not moist and soft enough, ice cream was good!

Our server was great as well! Friendly and timed everything perfectly!

8/10 (dock a mark for super expensive oysters haha I also buy/sell oysters so I know they make a killing on oyster profits! Ebisu has'em at a $14 per DOZEN. It doesn't take any more skill than the next person to shuck'em yet they charge 3x more per oyster! gosh!)

i too had a bad experience at Lux. we went there and they obviously screwed up our reservations and said something like "oh didn't you call in and said you changed it to 4 people?" - said the bitchy hostess (my reservation was for 6) but good thing only 5 of us showed up because we were given this small little round table to eat at. The sitting at this place is not meant to serve a meal, it's more of a loungy place. anyways no apologies whatsoever for messing up my reservation... also my reservation was for 7:15, my party showed up at 7:20 (honestly 5 minutes late) and the bitch was all like "oh i didn't think you guys were still coming" -again said the bitchy hostess... i looked at my watch with a confused look.
anyways started with the avocado ahi tuna tower which was OK but i waited an hour for my appy because they ran out of avocadoes... if you have no a la carte menu and there are only 3 appy choices you'd think they'd stock up on avocadoes considering it is one of the main ingredients of the dish..
for the main i had the steak which was really dry and had a weird taste to it, tasted like fire. i can't comment on this dish because it was probably the worst steak i've ever had. yes i know it was a striploin but it was really bad that i didn't even finish.
the best dish was probably the dessert but it was small, the sorbet was a tiny soup spoon size and the fondue for 2 did not come with enough fruits for 2 people.

overall i would NOT recommend lux dineout to anyone. it's more of a lounge place for a drink it's definitely not somewhere you should have dinner... i admit i chose this place because i thought the menu was quite appealing for $28 but it was a definite FAIL.

food + service = POOR

Trafalgar's was good.
Scallops were nice, 3 of them on top of small bed of green beans and mash potatoes. Mussels were nice as well. For entree's stick to the Lamb or add $3 for the Duck Breast it was probably my favorite. Desert I only tried the Flan it was ok but I'm not a big desert guy. Not bad for $28.

Fortes...I'm not sure if everyone here hyped it up it was only ok. The chowder needed more flavour it was bland, but it had a lot of stuff in there. My friend mentioned to me they cooked the Salmon too dry for her taste so I decided on the steak/prawns. Typical steak/prawn entré, I wish they used a better cut of beef instead though. Sirloin is cheap! I liked the Tuna dish better, wish I had that instead. Overall I thought portions were very good, if it was $28 it be perfect lol.

Edit: Sorry for making this thread go a little OT. I'm a huge fan of DOV, so please dine on!!!! :)

Couldn't you taste the bad oysters? If they taste fishy.. it's kinda common sense to not eat them. Especially in a palce like Joe Fortes - send them back.

Went to Le Gavroche with a bunch of friends last night.

Reservation at 8pm but didn't get seated until 9 as the restaurant was packed.

Food: 6.5/10
I had the Beef Carpaccio, Albacore Tuna, Creme Caremel (was advertised as the creme brulee). The beef and tuna are decent with the creme caramel taking a hit as mine was broken, runny and our whole table commented on the awkward star anise flavouring to it.
GF had the Oyster Crab Chowder, Chicken and Creme Caremel. The chowder was served luke warm and we asked the waiter why and he mentioned that it was serve that way to prevent the seafood from being overcooked. The chicken and the sides that came with it were pretty good - rightly seasoned and very moist.

Ambiance: 6/10
The restaurant and cutlery was rather dated - definitely has served its time. Noticed that they really tried to pack in more tables and the space on the 2nd floor is really tight

Service: 8/10
We had a pretty friendly waiter that was very accomdating to us. He even comped us drinks a few drinks because we had to wait for an extra hour for our table. Even received some amuse bouche for the whole table (which I'm not sure if its standard fare or not). Only mishap was because the restaraunt was kinda small and our waiter was kinda big he kept on bumping into a few things throughout the service.

Overall: 20.5/30 but I would really give it a 6/10
The food was a bit above average at best with again average ambiance. It was good to have tried the DOV at Le Gavroche but its probably not my cup of tea and I wouldn't return for another time for DOV or just another visit.

Dine out menu

Appetizers

1. Thai Prawns.
Coconut milk and green chili reduction accenting fresh tiger prawns and served with garlic baguette.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3366/3242120637_4f18ed2f14_o.jpg (http://flickr.com/photos/kwu/3242120637/)
Three prawns. Nothing too impressive to shout about. I didn't pick this, but neither of us felt like having salad.

2. Baby Dungeness Crab Cakes.
Pan Seared, then oven baked, served on mixed greens and accented with a sweet sambal aioli.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3452/3242952476_763ea63346_o.jpg (http://flickr.com/photos/kwu/3242952476/)
Tiny but packed full of flavour! Crumbled under the fork, and was great with the chili/sambal aioli.

Entree

1. Pointed New York.
“AAA”8 oz New York strip loin prepared to your liking, finished with Okanagan goat cheese and a Balsamic Vinegar reduction.
Served with potatoes and seasonal vegetables.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3492/3242120689_e38b472908_o.jpg (http://flickr.com/photos/kwu/3242120689/)
Okay, let me say. I love goat cheese. I wouldn't have thought to put it on top of a steak and eat it that way. Some say the taste of goat cheese is really strong and potent, but I think it's just right. I need to get some and have it with my steak, yum. Plenty of Balsamic Vinegar reduction to go along with my steak and mashed potatoes, provided some great tang and sweetness. Steak was medium rare like I ordered, and combined well with the two different flavours.

2. Pork Tenderloin
Marinated pork medallions, seared then baked, apple salsa garnish. Served with potato and vegetable of the day.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3328/3242120745_92870f0118_o.jpg (http://flickr.com/photos/kwu/3242120745/)
The initial bite reminded me of eating a chorizo...of course, it's pork. The apple's were still crunchy and had a little spiciness to it. Putting the two together works well. If I remember anything from foods class, apple and pork go well together anyways right?

Dessert
I couldn't decide between the Creme Brule or the Apple Pie, but the server suggested the Creme Brule. I think I should have gotten the Apple Pie instead. The brule was good, but it was just way too much for me.

1. Creme Brule.
Homemade in house Brule, accented with the liqueur of the week. [was Frangelico (http://www.frangelico.com/) when I went]
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3511/3242120805_6efc823994_o.jpg (http://flickr.com/photos/kwu/3242120805/)
Holy fuck, I have never seen so much creme brule before. I expected a ramekin, I got a soup bowl serving. I asked what the liquer was being used, and it was Frangelico, so a hazelnutty flavour. Indeed, I could pick out the flavor. Crunchy crust of caramalized sugar, and it was thick! As for the creme itself, wow it was so rich, I only ate half of the bowl and switched plates.

2. Mom's Chocolate Cake.
Hey! It’s my Mom….What can I say? I opened this place just to sell it.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3474/3242120869_4be17b6c9d_o.jpg (http://flickr.com/photos/kwu/3242120869/)

The cake was so dense, and it wasn't overly sweet. Seems like it was a semi-sweet cocao / chocolate, and was accompanied with a chocolate mousse made with reduced absolut raspberry. The little decoration on the side is honey over chocolate, with three drops of raspberry. I could eat more of this than the creme brulee, it was just too much.

Service - good, constantly came to fill up water, took the time to explain the dishes and did more than the standard "two bites and check if the customer is okay" routine.

Ambiance - the place is tiny and cozy. They just recently reno'd, yea I was eavesdropping on other tables.

Sorry for the shadow in the pictures, my lens is fat and wide so it casts a shadow. =P

u know, i never understood people that took pictures of their food.

isnt it very rude to take pictures in a restaurant, especially with flash?

it's like you guys have never seen nice food before or something, like taking pictures of a toilet or a shower. like food is some kind of thing only the high class and privileged can get.

I don't take pictures often... but I don't think it's rude. I mean, is it rude to take pictures of each other while at a restaurant? Unless someone really cares to pay attention to what you're doing, it's not really any different taking pictures of your food than of each other...

And taking pictures of food doesn't necessarily have to mean that it's a rare or special thing... some people just want pictures of what they eat! :p

I don't use flash. :)
I like taking pictures, it's my hobby, and so I'll take pictures of anything basically. My food included.
Think of the countless food blogs out there that take pictures of their food...

i dont find it rude when people take pictures of their food, but is very annoyed when these people stop me from eating my food. a friend of mine, she takes pictures of all the food..doesnt matter if its dim sum, fine dining, casuall dining, chinese restaurant dinner... everytime, she would have to take pictues of all the dishes on the table, hers and everyone elses.

lol i specifically meant taking pictures of food in a dark restaurant with a flash.

it's much like talking on your cell in a nice place. i guess it depends on the level of the restaurants. like how some places have no cell phone policy.

Went to Mistral last night.

Had the warm goat cheese salad, new york pepper corn steak, and a warm waffle with ice cream.

salad was nothing great, but not bad, typical salad
peppercorn sauce was good, steak was nice and tender but didn't have enough seasoning imo, could have been better
desert was one of the best i've EVER had in a very long time, especially surprising since it was so simple.

went to glowbal on sunday

went with the sunday prime rib dinner special for 26 bucks instead of the dine out menu

i was quite disappointed. they told us they serve their prime rib @ room temp...said something about getting more flavor that way.....ok fine maybe i don't know about this technique but i was quite disappointed honestly...i touch the prime rib with my finger and it was actually pretty COLD if you ask me....not a sign of warmth at all

Maybe I am ignorant but seriously I've never had a prime rib served to me at room temp...not to mention the meat was not medium rare like how i ordered and the meat was really tough.

bad experience for and according to my friends dine out entrees, they were mediocre at best

I used to post it all the time. The physical size of the plate is smaller, but the portion is the same, or maybe even slightly more than it used to be.

Glowbal isn't the best place for dinner. The brunch and lunch menu is a lot better...especially brunch.

The lobster is pre-cut and they supply you with plenty of napkins, plates to chuck the shells & a small bowl of lemon water to rinse your fingers. It takes a while to shell the lobster, but damn is it ever good! We try to have it every other month.
