With new years now here, here come the fatties

So,
Who is not looking forward to going to the gym the next 2 weeks?
Always, without fail, the gym will be filled with people trying to fulfill their new years "resolutions", hogging up equipment and space.
Anyone share the same sentiments as me ?

complaining about too many people in the gym after new years is like complaining about too many drivers on the road during rush hour. ya it's inconvenient, but they have just as much right to be there as you or i do.

its alright tho. they usually just stick to the eliptical and bikes and the 5-20lb weights. :D

quite the opposite, i've found, they sit on all the machines, doing everything wrong. i don't attempt to claim to be an expert, far from it, i do what i do, and i do it right... but i hate working out in gyms with other ppl so much that i've built myself a gym in my garage.
no one to bother me, and its cold as hell (i love to work out in the cold, get far too hot in the gym)
i certainly don't admire those needing to continue their regular routines for the next 2 months or so in a gym....

The bottom line is that they will pretty much only be there for the next two weeks.
Most statistics will tell you that people that use fitness and weight loss as a New Years Resolution give up within two weeks of the New Year....which coincidentally co-incides with the new stuff coming out on Fox and NBC :P
Statistics are right...once a couch potato always a couch potato.

seems like my gym never really swells up around new years so we're ok
took 3 months off too, gotta get back next week
They normally really only occupy machines ( they love the lat tower and bench machines) and most treadmills have a 20 minute limit, so I do not mind.
How many do you see actually using the power rack or barbell? As long as I can squat, dead, etc.. I could not care less.

yeah they only go on the cardio machines

My gym here in Victoria gets nuts. (Oak Bay Rec).
Without fail, right after new years the month of January is brutal. My gym is a relatively small one, and the community is tight-nit. I know every regular (I go 5 times a week).
Now I know that the gym-hoppers have as much right as I do, but what I CANNOT stand is when a newbie shows up and treats the place and people with that "i'm better than you disrespect". I feel like this gym is a second home and you're trespassing!!

It bugs me...I cannot find a parking space and every machine/bench is hogged up. For the next month, I'm going to go at the odd hours just to avoid the rush.

Here's something that may make it a bit more easy to put up with:
these new years people bring in huge amounts of easy cash for the gyms. Without them, gyms would have to charge a lot more from the regulars.
Maybe it'll help....I still get pissed off though :P
Woo! new years crowd the swoll is overwhelming! I like to see the teamwork workout, one guy benches a really heavy weight while his buddy spots him and does his deadlifts at the same time. A very efficient workout right guys...

hell yes. so frustrating. if you are willing to learn and put the time in, great, welcome aboard.
if you go in there as a noob and show other members little respect (not sharing machines, walking by each other in a rude way like you're the shit, not listening to tips, etc).. then yes, f* off.

Lol, I dropped 60lbs (220lbs now 160ish) in 2 years by working out at home on my treadmill. It's really not that hard to drop weight if you get yourself into a good routine and have a very clean diet.

today was the first time i really noticed the resolution trainers.
i goto the gym 8:30pm-10pm at night 4 nights a week for the last 2 years. the gym closes at 10pm. consistantly, by 9:00 theres just the usual 10 people in there and by 9:30 its down to 2 or 3. today at 9pm there must have been 50 people and at 9:45 there was still been 30 people in the gym.
i cant imagine what peak time would have been like.

some relatively chubby dude kept looking at my treadmill display as he kept running the other day. everytime i sped up he would match me, turned out to be a bad choice as he got thrown off the tread and ate shit hardcore by the 5th minute in going 8.5 :lol

Damn considered on going to the gym but been lazy!
Just been doing some light exercises at home and cutting down on my carb intake (ie no rice after 5pm etc.) So dropped from 182lbs to 175lbs.
170 is the goal..another 5 to go. woot woot
Its funny, my goal last year was to gain weight (I always hovered around the 160-165lb range) and now its the opposite.

Back on topic...every gym gets like this. And it can be frustrating but the whole bashing overweight people? The OP is probably the type of guy who bashes overweight people for eating McDonalds and then bashes them for working out and trying to live a healthier lifestyle. Lame ;)
Nah, i bash people who set the bar impossibly high and have no hope of changing their lifestyle and maintaining it.
Sure they have every right to be there, but it's a slow an agonizing process for everyone else there.

FUCK Chinese New Year just ended, and my gym was packed.. I guess people do resolutions here too!
go late at night, after 10pm, u see less ppl, more regulars, and u can catch the channel 9 news for a good hour while ur on the cardio, 11:00 for canada world wide, 11:30 for local news. then the rest of the time either listen to what they are broadcasting or ur own ipod.
leave the cell on vibrate and in the locker. that late at night, less chance of missing any important calls.
Berzerker
02-02-2009, 07:21 PM
^^ Its bad to work out to late at night. It affects your sleep. Your also supposed to eat about an hour before lifting and then again after lifting and that is also bad to do late at night :P
Berz out.
SkinnyPupp
02-02-2009, 09:10 PM
Yeah, working out late is bad. If you had a good workout, you will have problems sleeping, because your heart will still be going, and you will still be in 'burn calories' mode.
Besides, my gym closes at 10pm anyway...

Heres a brief progress log recorded on my calender:
Back from hong kong (November 17): 244 lbs.
New Years Day: 241 lbs.
January 24: purchased gym membership
Feb 1: 234 lbs
Feb 9: 230 lbs
Feb 11: 227 lbs.

I go to the gym at 530am 6 days a week and I noticed right after new years there was a good amount of new comers but by the end of January they were all gone. It didn't bug me much since its a big gym and at 530am there isn't a ton of people anyways so.... But I was at the gym on a Friday night at the beginning of January and it was the busiest I have ever seen it. Every single piece of equipment was being used, a ton of new comers, and the new comers are always easy to spot, they either have all the matching gear (shoes, shorts, top), or they show up in groups and jsut seem lost, or they spend 5 mins at a time on 3 or 4 different pieces of cardio equipment and never touch weights just cardio and maybe some cable machines. Or a combination of all those things.
Either way I could care less, in fact I kind of enjoy it. Its worth a laugh sometimes but overall they mostly are trying to do the same thing I was trying to do a couple of years ago. I lost over 70lbs in just over a year, so who am I to mock them for trying. I only wish they would actually stick around for longer then 3 weeks. We all start someone.
