: Rice makes a mess

So I have one of those cheap rice cookers. The one button kind. When I cook rice, it spits out sticky rice water out of the steam hole in the lid. Makes a big mess. Washing the rice before cooking helps, but doesn't solve it.

Am I doing something wrong? Or is it just a case of get what you pay for. And if I were to go out and spend $75 - $80 for a better Japanese rice cooker, would that solve this?

try letting the rice sit with the water for 10-20min before pressing cook button

pretty sure it doesn't matter, the steam from the bowl will always have bubbly water coming out from the steam hole.

it's science. boiling water, steam has to go somewhere...

It looks like you are going over capacity on your rice cooker. How many cups can your rice cooker take?

Put a wet dish cloth over the steam hole to minimize the mess. That's what my mom did in the old days when she had a crappy one-button rice cooker.

Nope definitely not. I usually never cook more than 1 cup of rice.

That's a good idea.

I've got one of these:

It works great. Nothing ever comes out of the hole except steam.

national/panasonic brand. they have a "steam over" resevoir on the side that u empty before cooking.

no way around it, thats just starchy water that its boiling over.

Why are you not washing the rice before cooking?

you have to wash very thoroughly. the water should basically be clear when you're done washing. the wet cloth is a good idea too

I always wash the rice. I said so in my original post. But still the problem exists.

it will always exist. it's just steam being trapped in the pot. there's no proof of any valid scienific reason, but rice does not need to be washed crystal clear. (it does waste water is the best explaination i can think of)

I won this one from Save-On-Foods:

Never spills. Does any kind of rice, and you can program it to be finished cooking the rice by the time you get home from work.

Awesomeness.

Oy oddly enough I remember the thread you made when you were deciding on a rice cooker. Guess you ended up getting those $20 ones. =P
