I have never gone skiing and would really like to try. I have snowboarded for the past 7 years and think I can pick it up pretty quickly.

My question is: About how much am I looking to spend on gear for a beginner, but won't outgrow so quickly?

i just want skis that are decent, and not some weird neon 90's color (i dont give a shit if they're beginners skis or whatever), and comfy boots.
oh yeah you need poles too.

I never really understood what the poles were for. No one on local downhill mountains seem to ever really "use" them for a specific purpose, other than to crawl around on flat land.
