hey guys what would you prefer to go offroading manual trans or auto?.....
and just want to know what do you guys think of 90-95 pathfinder and older 4runners....thanks

Depends. I lean towards a manual, but that's because I have no choice.

i would definately offroad in a manual trans, better engine braking on downgrades and alot tougher as heat doesn't affect them when going slow and working them hard.

I would even say a manual is better at crawling over stuff....just my 2 cents

auto ftw. less shock to drivetrain, and if your not shifting gears you can use that hand to hold beers

and a manual because you always have a direct connection from your foot and the throttle to your tires and full control over your tranny. with an auto, you often have a delay from your torque converter and automatic gear changes.

and you can hold a hill just as easily with proper clutch control as you can with an auto.

Having used both, I'll go out and admit that I'd rather have an automatic. There is way less shock to the drivetrain, which keeps things from breaking, and in doing so, let you make the most of the available traction, manuals just aren't as soft in the way they put the power down. It doesn't matter how good your clutch technique is, when one tire's stuck behind an obstacle, you always wish you had an automatic. I've never had to deal with automatic gearchanges or delays really, just because any serious off roading I've done has been done in first gear. If it's easy enough that I've got the thing in Drive, it's too easy for me to not care if it's manual or automatic.

Not to mention, you get the torque multiplication factor of a torque converter.

Really, the only benefit I see to a manual is when you really want control over your wheel speeds, like in sand or around here, mud bogging... which is kind of gay, in my opinion.

i have a 92 pathfinder

love it. its low tech, simple and it works.

Only downside with the older gen pathfinders is rust and frame rot

all city ( less than 15km's round trip) i usually get around 280-290km from 40 liters

city + hwy i can usually squeeze out 400km or so from 40L

the tank is bigger but my gas gauge is kinda busted :haha:

manual no questions asked. It's easier to drop it into first to hope over a log or start in 2nd to go through some mud.

If I had a buggy with rear steer I would go manual since it would be easier to crawl and use the rear steer at the same time.

I'm a lazt driver so Id want an auto...But I can see the advantages of having a manual while in the mud or on the rocks.

Auto with an extra trans cooler. Trying to crawl up stuff while on a steep hill sucks, especially when the clutch gets hot.

ive always had manual everything, manual shifter, manual 4x4, manual hubs....

ive heard of some nasty horror stories of guys gettin stuck in a mud pit...flick a switch to hit 4xlow...and nothing happens hahahahaha

Having had a auto blazer and manual ranger, auto is soo much better! I broke u joints and if I slipped the clutch to much I fkin burnt it, less stuff brakes on auto, if you had a rockwelled, indestructable buggy, then take manual, if you got a DD or crappy truck, go auto, but make shure the xfercase is manual, buttons break in mud :)

I like autos for wheeling but manuals for street driving.So much easier with a auto.If I had to choose pathy or 4 runner I would prolly go 4runner with the 22r 4 cylinder.Easy motor to work on and very reliable.
