: Floating Ip Address

Ok so I'm staying in a Hotel and I access the internet via the Hotel's high speed wireless network. The hotel however monitors bandwidth usage and after a certain amount of usage it chokes you down. It's like using a fire hose until you use to much water and then you have to use a straw. Obviously the network assigns an IP to whomever accesses it and that's how it knows who is using what bandwidth.

What I want to know is, is there way to fool the router and switch IP's once I've reached the bandwidth limit of an IP?

Thanks in Advance.

if it was wired internet, you could bring your own router, and keep chaning the mac address of the router. and each time you'd get a new IP.

I don't know how you'd do it over wireless. you can't change the physical mac address of you Wifi card. but maybe there is some software that hide it / fake it. I don't know

make ur ip a static ip
or renew your ip

That's really difficult to answer because you don't know what the logic is on their end.

If it's by MAC address, then you actually can spoof a different address. Google it up.

However, if it's by wire, maybe it's by switch port, and if that's the case, there's nothing you can do.

Bottom line is unless you know how they're determining to throttle the connection, it's hard to get around it.

He can tell the hotel that his room is inadequate, and demand a new one :D

This is what I was thinking. How do I switch from dchp to a static ip?

I tried to release and renew the IP but when I was on whatismyip.com it came back with the same IP.

keitaro probably has the best solution... just say, i cant do shit! i need to vpn into my office network and the connection is FAR too slow. chances are you're paying $10 a night at a hotel for the connection, so you should demand an adequate one.

berserker: you cant expect to release/renew your ip and get assigned a new one... DHCP ip lease last usually 24 hours (default in most cases). static ip means you manually change your ip in your network settings... i dont think this is gonna get you anywhere.. just call and bitch, its your best bet.

Obviosuly its the same since it will be going through a gateway....your internal ip may be different though (depending on the lease). You can set a static ip under Network Connections, TCP/IP, but that will depend on if an address is already being used/reserved..etc.Lots to factor in.

Invisisoul said it best..

Try the MAC address method first.
