Karate Kid remake. Jackie Chan = Mr. Miyagi, Jaden Smith = Daniel-san

Jackie Chan is set to play a new version of beloved karate mentor Mr. Miyagi -- though not necessarily a character named Mr. Miyagi -- in the new remake of 1980s classic The Karate Kid.
Who'd have thought Pat Morita would be a casualty of the remake craze currently consuming Hollywood, but that's exactly what's happening, as the late actor's iconic performance as Mr. Miyagi is getting a makeover for the new Kid, which will star Will Smith's son, Jaden. The film will be directed by Harald Zwart (who???) the man behind the upcoming Steve Martin vehicle The Pink Panther 2.
Variety describes the film thusly:
Set in an exotic Asian locale, the new film will borrow elements of the original plot, wherein a bullied youth (Smith) learns to stand up for himself with the help of an eccentric mentor (Chan)
I'm not an overly nostalgic person, but there are just some things I'd like to remember as they were. This must be the work of Cobra Kai.

In my opinion, it's destined for failure. You just shouldn't mess with a classic.

fail
i was telling my cousin several weeks ago, that he should make a new karate kid and cast Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio) and make him the new Mr. Miyagi
that would be so much cooler and make more sense

The Karate Kid isn't the Karate Kid without the "You're the Best" tournie song and other 80's music.

What really ticks me off if that asian people are stereotyped as martial artist in hollywood. Well, looks like even a black kid took that spot now.

OK this looks pretty awesome, or at least not a complete utter failure that I thought it would be. It looks like they really stuck to the original story, which is good.
Shouldn't it be called Kung-Fu Kid though?
My main hope is that this encourages them to release a really good version of the original on Blu-Ray.

I'll be watching this for sure....but i don't get it....
An Af-Am family....moves to China, the kid gets kicked ass by these chinese kids, gets a chinese instructor, learns kung fu,.....but names the movie after japan's most coveted martial art?
This credibility is just as bad as when they called 'The Departed' an "original american classic."
Man.....the chinese culture is getting raped by hollywood. Not that i am chinese, but not too fond with that; at least give credit where credit is due.
On the plus side, you don't have to hear that New Jersey accent from Daniel san. I hate the new jersey accent....so irritating.
SkinnyPupp
12-24-2009, 08:52 AM
Daniel's guido accent is part of what made him such an outcast in LA. The movie wouldn't be the same without it!

Ehhh...give him a new york accent....philly accent. But the jersey accent?? Now you can see why he got beaten up all the time.

i didn't really feel like pay for this movie as i know the only good thing about would be the fighting parts
but serious im from hong kong/taiwan, i lived in china for a year & know that the skool would god father your ass if u dun where your uniform
plus international schools & public schools or complete different, cuz that school look like pubic school filled with white folks
most creepy part was when jackie chan was healing will smiths son by rubbing his hands on his body with no shirt on (looked like a real fuck pedo to me) & when that chinese boy starts touching will smiths sons hair (that was pretty gay if u ask me)

i found it a pretty good remake from the first karate kid. there were some parts that was taken, such as lines, ideas, concepts. As a kid who took a martial art at childhood, i was really impressed by the character development and emotions taken from this story. the action scenes i thought was pretty cheezy near the end but during the middle it got really intense imo!
id' rate it a solid 8.5/10.

It was an okay movie... if i didnt compare it to the Old KK (which is kind of hard since they're like using direct quotes in the dialogue) i would give it a 6/10
but having to do the obvious and compare it to the original.... 5/10
that last move was like a slap in the face to viewers... it was just so ridiculous... i thought he would do the kick he's been training to do the whole damn movie... wtf was that bullshit....
also they made his opponent toooo damned good throughout the movie to have
a) gotten so few points
b) lost...
i actually thought they were going to make Jayden Smith lose... but have both sides learn a great lesson... it would have made more sense than to give him some impossible stunt to do....
the acting involved in the dialogue throughout the film was so bs (by jayden) granted he's a kid but still it took away from the film..
and day trips to train on the great wall??? or in the mountains from beijing?!...... -_-
Oh and the girl of the movie... wtf was her teacher saying like "do you know what this will mean for your family" when he's talking about her succeeding the audition that implied they were poor or something and then they show her parents being these huge Ballers.... and wtf did she get accepted to the Beijin Academy of Music?
and the movie was too long... 2,5hrs for what they put into it made it waaaay too boring my ass ached like hell... and its only sore during boring movies

i fully expected this to be a shitty movie and was genuinly surprised that it wasn't. yeah there were some cheesy parts, but it IS what it was made to be: a feel good movie. people were cheering and clapping throughout the movie, that doesn't happen too often.
i liked it! 8/10

I don't recall any kick he was being trained to do throughout the whole movie...
That last kick was all real, done by Jaden, according to the commentary.
I dunno.. I enjoyed the movie. It didn't seem long at all.
I was actually surprised to find that it was over 2 hours long.
