Hey guys,

My friend drove over a median, was quoted $2500 at the mechanic because he has to order a new rim, and replace the axle.

Anyways, he said that he's doing it privately rather than going through ICBC, so his insurance doesn't go up.

My question is will his car have a rebuilt title now, even though he's not going through ICBC?

No, and even if it went through ICBC there would be no rebuilt notation on the car -- just a $2500ish claim. This is assuming that the car is worth a fair bit, and it sounds like it is.

no. make a claim through ICBC but tell them you will be paying out of your own pocket. In fact they will suggest that to you first.

go through icbc, and just make the re-pay option. won't affect anything but a claim on the vehicle.

totally up 2 your friend, either he can take the 2500 hit and pay for it, or go through icbc and get a 2500 claim on the history of the car.

If he plans on paying it himself why bother going through ICBC? Also, to save some money, maybe he should check out the Wheel & Suspension Buy & Sell forum to see if he can get a used wheel for cheap.

Just talked to him tonight, he said that he needed a new rim, and his suspension was a bit damaged. He had lowering springs on them, one of them is shot so he probabaly will have to pay for 4 new ones.
He still hasn't decided what to do, I reccomended going through ICBC but the problem is the "Principle" Driver is his Dad, who is on vacation. He's going to be out of a car for a while

Try to get an OEM rim somewhere else. Dealers charge so much for their OEM rims, it's ridiculous - $500-600/rim is common.

get it fixed yourself, not worth the hassle going to icbc. Also you stated he was not the principle driver? You might get asked alot of questions by icbc

Doesn't matter who's insurance the car is on. It's the driver.

Whoever drives the vehicle gets the penalty for their insurance.
If his dad decides to keep his insurance coverage, his dad takes the hit
If he cancels, the son takes the hit.

ONLY if the car was vandalized, etc does the insurer take the hit. If it's a driving fault accident, it's the driver.

Simple as that.

Also, don't be stupid and cancel the insurance for the Dad and switch it to the son. cause it's the same thing, PLUS the insurers insurance goes up as well. or something retarded like that.

Just fix it yourself if you can.

whoa did this mechanic quote new oem parts? one wheel and axle for $2500?!? i would suggest that you tell your friend to troll around for used parts at the wreckers... there should be enough inventory out there for this model.

Other option is to go aftermarket (for the axle and the springs that is)...it will be cheaper.
