it's a 2000 VW Golf GL 2.0L brake light goes on and check engine light with
80 000km on it.

the brake ligh indicator is on? or ur brake lights constantly stay on?
the brake lights constantly staying on might be a manufactuer defect. brake pedal hits this switch under the dash board that turns on the rear brake lights. my buddies vw jetta had that issue, basically the switch was sticking.

the check engine light, if its a 00, then it should have obdII, so u should be able to scan it and grab a code to look up.

Go to dubberz.com and ask someone to OBD2 scan your car. There are a few people on there with scanners who will be willing to do it for a beer, or even free if they're nearby.

^ Ditto! :) Gotta love the close relationships between Volkswagen owners in Lower Mainland/North America.

If you just want the code scanned, I can do so for you as well. I actually work at Kingsway/Knight'ish, but have my own scantool for personal use too.

Any of those three will do you good. They all have very good reps in the VW community.

meh, that's why i don't like VW. You need special tools... they jew you like that

^ What special tools? It's the same with any other imports.

No, there are some VW specific tools that you do need, if you're going to be doing specific jobs. Penthead socket for the head bolts on 1.8T VW/Audi engines, triple square bits for axles, pressure plates, flywheels, etc., 17mm hex bit for drain plugs/fill plugs on trannies, and I'm not even going to get into the nasty very specific tools for removing the cams from said 1.8T engines.

VAG loves their bits, basically. Everyone else uses sockets for most things, VAG loves to do it the other way.

Ya, but plenty of those aren't VW specific. All the tools I needed for working on Volkswagens I ended up using on other vehicles (triple square bit, penta head socket, etc)... albeit I'll admit that I'm having trouble finding another use for that bloody 17mm hex key. :( lol

I guess my point is that there aren't that many VW specific tools that one needs to buy, since plenty of 'em are used on other vehicles as well. They just aren't your common, run-of-the-mill tools. Mind you, I'm referring to MK3's and older, so who knows how correct I am for the MK4. :p

Name another car/manufacturer where you've found you needed the penta-head socket, or the triple squares. ;)

^^ BMW.

for the OP about the brake light staying on....some mk4 have a N4 recall which is replacing the brake light switch..check with your dealer and see if ur VIN falls in the range of recall

Worked on an older Audi CGT that required 'em. Mind you, I'm not sure they were stock OEM parts, but I needed those tools anyway. :p

German cars, then. But you won't find them on any domestic/japanese car. And BMW doesn't use them as much, I've found. They like their basic hex bits more than triple squares.

There is a recall on the brake light switch on VW MK4s.. Go to the VW dealership, and they should repair it free of charge..

^Remember to check your oil levels frequently.. these bloody engines can burn A LOT quite quickly..

Alatar
01-17-2009, 08:39 PM
VW's "normal" specification is for the 2.slow to be allowed to burn/lose 1L of oil/month. That's their factory specification. So, if I were you, I'd be checking that oil every 2-3 weeks.

BMW and MB differentials use 17mm hex.. but it is way better to use a Hex socket than a key.. can't torque a key;)

I know this is going to sound funny... but don't rule out going to a dealership... They may charge more per hour but you can rest assured that the tech who is working on your car is actually a certified... the other thing is that the time they alow for jobs is less than those doing the work at some of the smaller shops... FOR EXAMPLE... Clarkdale allows 4 hours for a coilover/suspension install... PG is minimum 5... At 90 bucks an hour @ PG and 112 @ clarkdale... well you be the judge...

I KNOW I am biased towards clarkdale... but in general people are quick to rule out a dealership and in some cases thats wrong... Every time my car has gone into an aftermarket shop like pg it always costs me more than they quoted in the first place... (just throwing that out there!)

VW/audi are not backyard mechanic friendly. the drain plug for my transmission is a 16mm 12 point tamper proof plug. funny thing is i used vice grips and they worked like a charm.
not a fan of there fasteners. but i like there cars.
