I just have a basic TomTom One. I bought it for my trip to California and it was good enough. I'm sure it doesn't have all the bells and whistles as some of the expensive models but it did the job and got us everywhere.

i was trying out some gps couple of weeks ago cuz i was planning on picking one up ... but not until summer
just go to fs and bb.. try them out, if u dont like one, return it or exchange for another model or brand..

quick question. The better the gps the faster it'll get connection? or it doesn't really matter except for the current positioning.

Pros:
with the 3.5" screen I can slap it into my pockets and walk around
excellent battery life
locks onto satellites VERY quickly, recalculates directions within two seconds of missing an intersection
TONS of cool features (maximum speed, average speed, total distance, distance remaining, etc etc)
6 million preloaded locations are VERY useful...
text to speech is AWESOME and comes with dozens of languages
you can upload new cars, maps, languages, etc
Cons:
I've yet to find one...

I wouldn't...I have GPS on my work BlackBerry and it's worthless...9 times out of 10 I try to use it it won't lock onto satellites...plus, when it works you can't make calls, text or drive (since you have to hold it)

I was researching this a while ago. If you want cheap and affordable and newest, take the Garmin Nuvi 255.
Newest UI and chips, fast, has most of the bells and whistles that you'll ever need in a GPS unit.

I have the Garmin Nuvi 255
My only complaint is the slightly sloe connection to satellite times occasionally, however, the ease of use, look, feel and quality are top notch.
I did my research, and played around with a few of my freinds units, and decided that Garmin was the way to go.

I bought a Nokia 500 GPS Unit for cheap at gpscity.ca.
Pros:
-TTS
-Fast Locking
-Built in FM Transmitter
-Uses Nokia Maps (Which is VERY similar to the cellphone version. (Smart2Go Mapping))
-BT
-4.3" Screen
Cons
-UI is retarded. Nothing is where it should be. Hard to find the correct menus for what you want.
-Limited POIs (Since its using Smart2Go)
Overall this is a good device.. but you have to have some patience with it 'cuz nothing in the menus is where you'd expect it to be.

Really noob question: Do most of these portable ones include easy installation? Any hook up neccessary and can you remove it easily?
And do you purchase maps or pay anything extra? For $300 it sounds like a steal if it can help you navigate around the Lower mainland.

For $300 it sounds like a steal if it can help you navigate around the Lower mainland. | There's ZERO installation You just put the suction cup thingie on your windshield and away you go...you can run a power wire as well, but I just got a home adapter and charging at home (and bought a 2nd charger as a back-up for my car, but never had to use it).
Mine came with Canada/US (with Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico) pre-loaded and there's nothing to pay extra for
The nuvi 255 can be had for around $200, but my g/f picked it up for me for Xmas for under $150... |

what brand/model do you have?
I'm honestly not sure whether it does or doesn't lol...I've yet to crack the manual open (it's soooo easy to use, I never bothered lol)...if you can't find an answer to your question by the time I get home, I'll check my manual for you |
