You don't need to know chinese to play it but it helps (there's a "set" of tiles that use chinese numbers 1-9).

its not very hard, you got 14 tiles, you want to make 4 sets of 3, and then a pair, when you win.

sets can be consecutive of the same suit, or a triple. and a pair thats the same. ta da!

Give that a read. The "chow" is consecutive tiles (1,2,3 or 4,5,6 etc..). The "pong" is three of a kind (1,1,1 or 2,2,2 etc..). The "kong" is four of a kind. That link gives you an idea on scoring, which is kinda important. The actual playing rules are simple, you just need to be taught in person cause it's alot easier to understand than reading.

i try not to, but obviously we set the ground rules first. if no chicken allowed, then no chicken allowed!

and there is mahjong on yahoo... not the one where you gotta match the tiles to rid the screen, but actually live mahjong that you can play w/ others.

chicken is for losers.. we play 五番 penalty for eating that.

There's a variety of different ways to play, depending on what style you're playing:

Cantonese
Taiwanese
etc.. etc..

Some differences between them include how many tiles you're allowed in your "deck" and how money is counted. If you're curious how to play I suggest the Gundam mahjong game for NDS if you have one and a supercard/R4.

General similarities:

Pong = When another player discards a card (ex: 3 of sticks), and you have 2 in your deck, you can call "Pong" and take the discarded card. Set it aside with your 2. Then discard a card.

Chi = When the player before your turn discards a card (ex: 2 of pies?), and you have a sequence with that tile, you may call "Chi". Take discarded card and pie of 1 & 3 OR 3 & 4, and set it aside.

But best way really is to play a game, and have someone who knows how to play to sit beside you and teach as you play.

Gundam Mahjong is horrible..slow....Mahjong Fight Club is where its at for JP mahjong..

im into TW style...cantonese MJ is slow..once u play the TW way...the HK way seems dull..
the so called "chicken" for canto can turn around and be huge in TW...
i foudn once i got goof at TW style, Canto style was too easy to win
