I would say the problem has been resolved last week with a firmware update. If you have one of these drives, you should update your fimware. You can find the update at Seagate.

st31500341as sata 1.5tb no problems.
dunno if i wanna upgrade firmware seeing how things are good as is.


edit: both my drives are on the list, however inputting my serial number on the checker showed update was not needed.

the service center said something about the faulty control arm that causes weird ticking noise. Go look it up on the web, I have found many users complained the same issue.

The complaints involve drives running Linux, Mac OS X and Windows Vista.

My drive ST37500330AS on SD15 firmware apparently is one of the affected models. I've been running on this drive for about a year now with no issues.

Updated the firmware anyways just to be safe.

I've never really had any major issues with Seagates - I've only ever had to RMA one drive (a 250GB drive) that I was using in an external enclosure. I suspect however that it may have been heat related as the enclosure got unusually warm when it was powered up for a period of time.

I've had to say that I've returned more WD's that I have Seagates.

ticking noise with my 1.5TB - yes, upon booting.
I've also read many complaints with the 7200.11 barracudas.
I think the 1TB drives are fine though.

I was looking into the Seagate HDD's, and heard about firmware issues.

This really makes my decision clear. Do not buy seagate til they fix this issue. If you read the NCIX forums you'll see TONS of threads about the same issue.

Been running my seagate for over a year now. So far so good. Originally had AD14 firmware. Updated to SD1A just to be safe. Supposidly the new firmware fixes the problems.

Nope - all data intact after the firmware upgrade. Like someone mentioned, the new firmware is SD1A.

You can download their Seatools app to find out what model and firmware you have if you don't want to bust your case open.

I bought a 500GB seagate barracuda last year. Every once in awhile it'll make weird noises.

I barely use it anyways, I only turn it on if I want to transfer a large amount of stuff from my regular HD to free up space.

Still loving my 320GB. I'd buy several more if I wanted to.

I actually used to really like Maxtor... like probably early 2000's... always bought Maxtor drives, and they were pretty reliable for me. But towards the end before they got bought out by Seagate, I started having some pretty poor experiences with them.

actually i remember now, i had 1 40GB failed on me about 2ish or 3 years ago.
i think i might have dropped it but dont remember. it served me well for over 7or so years, too bad i didnt backup the content on the drive tho, they were **important lol...

^Those Maxtor "thin" 40GB drives were horrid, one DVR manufacturer we deal with used them as system drives for an entire production line, and we ended up replacing almost all of them within two years of installing the systems (at least a couple dozen, just of the ones we service).

At least Seagate have a fix for it. Better than those 40gb IBM DEATHstar drives. I had like 2 of them and both are now dead. Funny thing was they died a couple times before and to bring them back to life, you just need to do a low level format. It will be fine for like a few months and then die again. Got so tired of it that i threw it on the ground.

As for the firmware update, I updated my STA3500320AS firmware SD15 that I bought during boxing week and it seems to be fine. I did an ASR on it just incase it doesnt come back to life and saved the file to my external drive. Followed the instructions and the upgrade was fine and easy.

Best price for 1TB I could find was $119 for the seagate, Might as well pay $11 for a much better one. BUT I think most people are interested in the SeaGate for the 1.5TB HDD. There's nothing else on the market thats 1.5TB. And it's not expensive, $148 for 1.5TB.

But imagine losing 1.5TB worth of data. That would piss anyone off. WD Black it is.
