: 2010 Ford Taurus SHO Spied Naked

Although Ford wasn't expected to unveil the new Taurus SHO until the Chicago Auto Show next month, a few undisguised pictures have made their way to the internet.

The pictures were taken along I-75 in Michigan and from the lack of snow, it seems reasonable to assume they are several months old. According to the report that accompanied the photos, the cars come with dual exhaust, a rear deck spoiler, and at least 19-inch wheels.

Power is expected to come from Ford's new 3.5-liter EcoBoost twin-turbo direct-injection V6 engine which produces 355 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque (474 Nm). Judging by the fact that the 2010 Lincoln MKS equipped with all-wheel drive and the same engine gets 16 mpg city and 25 mpg highway, expect the new SHO's fuel economy to mirror that if not be slightly higher thanks to its lighter weight.

The new SHO will most likely only be offered with all-wheel drive in order to keep torque-steer under control, a complaint that occurs often in front wheel drive vehicles with power rating at or above 300 hp. Other performance goodies will most likely include the SR1 suspension which offers a "one-to-one" rear shock absorber ratio for enhanced cornering and handling while still delivering a comfortable ride and Ford's new SelectShift transmission that allows for rev-matching downshifts and the ability to hold gears.

Good looking car. My first impression was a bumped-up Toyota camry with bigger alloys.

Ford is actually doing well at the current state of the Automotive industry compared to the other two. I have high hopes for Ford since they're releasing decent looking cars such as the Taurus and soon the new "Coyote" engine for the mustang. :)

it is not based anywhere near the Mondeo.. it is just a reskinned version of the old Taurus/500 to make it less offensive.

Mondeo is more advanced.. ie more aluminium etc.

Upgraded version of Mondeo. meh

Heard this beast is gonna have a twin turbo six cylinder, with 300+ something horsepower. They were talking about it on news 1130 this afternoon on my way home. Kinda sad they aren't droppin' in a v8 like they've done previous, but this twin turbo sounds interesting...

so specs-wise it's like a V6 Twin Turbo AWD family sedan?

That's like......my 16 year old car. Great archievement Ford! Also people will soon bitch about the difficulties in servicing a V6TT in a horizontal layout. I mean it's a Ford you expect it to break down but at least make the repairs less painful imo.

i was just re-reading the article in the april's C&D. The competition from The Pontiac G8 GXP is enormous. While the SHO with performance package will sit at around $54k CAD, while the G8 with all possible options and bigger engine, subsequently developing 410ish horsepower will sit at $42k CAD. Pontiac, is faster, better looking, cheaper, more fun to drive the whooly five hundred. I think Ford went nuts with this one.

Not to mention the Charger R/T.

This will probably attract the loyal SHO buyers, no one else.

it has a new 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine, so I guess the fuel economy should be somewhere around a camry(non-hybrid)

The big selling point for the Taurus has always been it's size. There are lots of people who prefer a large car, both for interior space, and for luggage space, and for safety.

Small cars are much safer than they ever used to be, but at the end of the day, a larger car with more metal is still going to fair better against a large truck or tree, than a small car.

Remember also, the demographics of vancouver - congested and tight, with a HUGE asian population. Phillipinos and Chinese, on average, are much smaller than the a-typical southern overweight American white trash that is so prevalant in some states. Remember that there are 300million american and 30million canadians. There are a LOT more fat americans in America than small asians in vancouver.

Hence, the taurus.

So, while it may not make much sense for the average Vancouverite (which is why most BC dealers don't stock many Tauruses) it DOES make sense for lots of other people who NEED THE SPACE.

Don't trash talk a product just because it doesn't apply to you.

Some of the new features on it are pretty sweet too. Like the MyKey that allows you to set the speed limit and volume limit for some key users, which can be your teenage kids. I think for a family of 4 or 5 this would be an amazing car. Plus is looks fucking sexy, a lot better then that import crap that all the ricers on this board love.

ZOMG 50k FOR FORD?!?!?!?! WTF?!??!?!!?!!?! YOU CAN BUY 325I FOR THAT OR A C CLASS!!!!!!

Considering this car is competing with an e-class and a 5 series I think there are alot of really really really really really dumb people on revscene.

Ford has been pumping out quality cars for the past 10 years, and infact ford is prefered in europe (where everything is better than north america) than domestics. All my family in greece actualy own older ford fiestas/focus's.

$50k would be too much for that thing...I'd rather have something else.

Don't be ignorant.

Would you say the same thing about a BMW 550i?

Lets compare:

550i
4.8L V8, 360hp, 360tq
Weight: 4000lbs
Consumption: 17mpg City, 25.8hwy
Price: $80,000+

Taurus SHO
3.5L V6TT, 355hp, 350tq
Weight: 4200lbs (based on lincoln mks)
Consumption: 16mpg city, 25hwy
Price: $50,000

WOW THE BMW HAS A WHOLE 1MPG CITY AND 0.8MPG HWY MORE!!! IT'S NOT A GAS GUZZLER, BUT THE TAURUS IS!!!

$54 CND??? Why not get a BMW for that kinda cash??

From bmw.ca

2010 528i Sedan 230hp Rear-wheel $56,200cdn msrp

2010 528i Sedan 230hp All-wheel $58,800cdn msrp

2010 535i Sedan 300hp All-wheel $68,900cdn msrp

2010 550i Sedan 360hp Rear-wheel $80,400cdn msrp

From my internal resources:

2010 Taurus LTD Sedan 263hp All-wheel $40,699cdn msrp

2010 Taurus SHO Sedan 365hp All-wheel $48,199cdn msrp

The SHO is most comparable to a 550i, and the SHO has more power AND all-wheel-drive, but for $32,000 dollars less.

You can trash-talk Ford all you want, but if you drove both cars, you'd probably have a hard time justifying spending $32,000 more for a 550i. (And I *love* BMW's, I think they're awesome.. but the SHO is a good value.)

When the MKS finally comes with ecoboost, it'll be most comparable to the 550i, but it's not out yet with Ecoboost and there is no pricing for it yet.. it'll probably be in the $58,000range - more luxurious inside than the SHO, and still less money than a 550i.
