In the TC it says a 32 year old with an Acura was caught racing a red 90's mustang w/ white top. Going North by Vernon at Gateway village just as the lanes go into 4 there was a speed check. All this at 1pm it stated. Come on guys really!?

It doesnt suprise me in the least, I live on Vernon and the number of times I hear cars racing down there is remarkable considering the Saanich Police station is right there. I am more suprised I don't see more radar traps set up there. SP could make their years budget in a day probably.

They were busted doing 90-100km's an hour in a 50km zone. Doesn't the speed limit jump up to 80km's RIGHT in that area anyhow?

yeah, cops love to hang out by that Budget lot there (where I'm guessing this happened) where its basically a highway with a 50kph limit. You can see the 80 sign just a bit ahead but they will get ya if you speed up too early. (Seen it happen, not personal experience :p)

Yeah, don't do that. Luckely i was pulled over way past the 80k sign so i was let off with a nice friendly warning
(i don't even rmember how fast i was going to be honest, i think he knew with his super cop powers)
Thats when i learned the police station was right there :P

Seriously dudes, I know the guy driving the car. TC totally blew it out of proportion. He got a ticket for driving with undue care. He was coming down the road and some dude in a haggard red 5.0 mustang was revving his motor behind him, and then went drove beside him. Black acura accelerated, went infront of him, and turned left onto that road behind timmies because that's where he was going. Apparently dude in red mustang did some burnout and took off down the highway, and driver of the acura stopped at the Esso gas station to buy some gas. Cop comes and writes him a ticket, and initially accused him of street racing, but they talked it over and he issued the driving with undue car ticket.
So yah... don't believe everything you read in the TC.

Totally. They didn't chase the guy in the mustang at all, but accused driver of the Acura as knowing the guy in the Mustang, and acura driver was like "What the hell? I don't know who they funk that guy is." I should also mention that the police officer came to where the owner of the Acura works later on in the day and gave him a letter stating how he saw things, and told him that he should probably challenge it. But the letter from the office clearly states that the 95km/h was only visually perceived, as there was no speed gun at all...

The speed doesn't jump to 80kph till you are about 500m down the road almost near the Mckenzie turn off.

I'm sure we've all done things down that stretch of highway after the turn. I feel sorry for the guys that got caught.

Did anyone read my posts? They were not street racing. There wasn't any kind of race at all.

In related news, they were radaring this morning on that stretch from the side street on the left right before the cop shop. Luckily I never speed......

I am suprised there aren't more police catching people speeding in that spot on Blanshard. Lots of people are going up the far left and especially the far right lane that opens up right before the intersection to get ahead of other cars.
Very few people are going 50km/h.
Instead the police sit in the middle of the highway on the McKenzie overpass where you can easily see them.

If the police wanted to catch street racing they would get a ghost car and position it around Durrance Lake. That long strip of road is riddled with tire marks.

if the police wanted to catch street racers i could point them in a few places.
they could also just go undercover, not that hard.

society is fucking retarded when it comes to this, saying it kills lives and shit, look at how many lives were lost compared to impaired driving. it's ridiculous.

Don't know who you are, but finally someone that has there head on straight.
There are 10x the accidents and deaths related to DUI than to Street Racing. If ya don't believe me, just ask a tow truck driver.

Just because there are less causes of accidents / deaths doesn't make it any better. Compare it to shooting a gun. Shooting a gun in a firing range, that's fine. Shooting a gun drunk, pretty much anywhere, probably a bad idea, even at a firing range could be a good chance you shoot someone in the groin. Shooting a gun in public place... well, there's a good chance you won't hit anyone, but also a strong chance you will. Just because the odds are a lot lower that you're going to kill a family street racing then driving drunk doesn't mean you should do it.

I think you may have taken that the wrong way, I am not endorsing street racing. I just get pissed that the media always blows speeding way out of proportion and turns it into street racing. IF they gave the same attention to DUI's in the Media as they do street racing, there could be a hole news section dedicated to it. Sorry rant mode off, I just get so fed up with the Media blowing it so far out of proportion.

Alright that makes sense. I did take it as a sort of street racing endorsement. But I completely agree with you on the whole media thing. It's a good story for them right now, where as DUI doesn't sell enough newspapers... sad really.

I agree with this wholeheartedly. It all comes down to disproportionate media coverage.
When an old lady hears about an alleged street race, she gasps and complains to her husband about those irresponsible, unruly teenagers. I can guarantee that if a DUI makes the newspaper at all, the same old lady will give it no attention at all.
In 2006, in the USA, 16,885 traffic fatalities were attributed to alcohol. Compare that to 399 fatalities attributed to street racing over a three year period between 1998 and 2001.
Talk about disproportionate representation by media and law enforcement...

Just to pour more gas on this fire. How many of those convicted of DUI had their cars CRUSHED in an impound lot? Probably none. I remember a bunch of convicted street racers in California losing their cars as punishment.
I dont condone either activities, and i could see harsher punishments to street racers as a tactic to help control such behavior before it gets to a level like drink driving has, but so far i have not seen any evidence towards this. Its just an easier sell for the evening news than a DUI

How do you figure? TC ran a story that was bogus - again - light was shed on the truth, and now a discussion has ensued.

let me just say i would not be suprized if the idiot in the black 3.2 was street racing. i used to work right by him and he always drove like a retard. he repeatedly tried to race a co-worker and almost drove him off the road; not to mention doing 100km down a narrow 50km road.... i hope he got what he deserved!
