Some Victoria-area residents were given an early morning jolt out of bed as a moderate earthquake hit the area.
The 4.6 magnitude quake, which hit at about 5:25 a.m. Friday, was centred 25 kilometers northwest of Seattle.
Victoria is just across Juan de Fuca Strait from the epicenter which was close to Washington State's Olympic Peninsula.
Residents of Victoria report feeling the quake in their homes.
There are no reports of damage in Washington State or on Vancouver Island.

from what i learned in geography, this is true, the small earthquakes release the pressure in the plates thus reducing the chances of one big earthquake

That begs the question...were you pre-occupied with something? Perhaps..masturbating? Perhaps, masturbating hard enough that your shakes and squirms over powered those of the subtle earthquake?
Just some food for thought.

Is it just me or are some of you fucking illiterate? Read the article again and it will clearly state that it happened 25KMs northwest of Seattle meaning people who live in Victoria were able to feel the shake.
For fuck sakes.

I swear to god I felt it this morning... mind you I was still half asleep debating hitting the snooze button again... but I swear I felt it. I even convinced myself it was nothing, and I must be dreaming or whatever. Until I heard about it on the radio on my way into work.
Man, if I was able to feel that wussy quake in my appt... I'm so done if the big one hits and I'm home!

It's been know for the past few decades that the West Coast will have a big Earthquake.
It's not like it's a brand spanking new thing that just popped out of nowhere.
There's a big chance we'll get a 9.0 earthquake tommorow as we will 50 years from now.

i believe anything over 7.5 Richeter and the lowermainland is fucked.
All the buildings here are built out of wood...only some public buildings like elementary schools and hospitals can take the hit since they're more sesmic-proof.
I guess at the sme time you wont be crushed by a chunk of concrete either :p

wood is more flexible than concrete. it's the older cement buildings that are more prone to semis damage.

Keep in mind that each "number" for earthquakes are 10 times more or less potent than the next number.
ie:
a 5.0 is ten times stronger than a 4.0
a 7.0 is one hundred times stronger than a 5.0
So really, when you think about the giant earthquake that caused the tsunami and flooding in thailand (9.3) a 4.6 is almost five orders of magnitude (10x10^4, or 100,000 times) weaker.
Hardly noticable.

Didn't feel this one at all. Not like the 6.8 that was in Seattle/Tacoma in 2001. That one I really felt. You could feel the floor shift around. I talked to one of my coworkers that was coming back from a site visit and he said he couldn't drive on the road cause of the shifting.
