InvisibleSoul
02-07-2009, 05:14 PM
It has to be installed and running...

The only people that would be put this on their phones willingly must have absolutely nothing to hide and don't mind their friends knowing where they always are...

threezero
02-07-2009, 05:16 PM
not really the first software of its kind. There are many anti-theft software for various phones can be use the same way. Probably with this is that it uses data to sent the location to its server. If whoever you are stalking doesn't have a data plan its going to be pretty obvious when he/she get the monthly bill something is wrong.

iwantaskyline
02-07-2009, 05:28 PM
I'm assuming this works only if you have a data plan...

BoneThug
02-07-2009, 05:45 PM
lol stalker much? what would you actually do if you saw the gps beacon go into some random house at 4am. what baby? you're at a friends house? you'll call me tomarrow around 1ish. ok have fun honey.

tiger_handheld
02-07-2009, 05:45 PM
yea, u obviously need a data plan but with Tom Dick and Harry being able to afford one - its not a obstacle.

It also gives you the opportunity to "exit and continue sharing(of your location)", so the person will not even know it!

i gotta say its a pretty sweet app!

I know there's an option to turn it off. Imagine a group of people having this installed (eg: you and your gf). How suspicious would that be to see someone turning it off. lol

They mean for it to be used so people will walk down the street, staring at their phones the whole time and be able to go, "ZOMGWTFBBQz0Rs my buddy Billy Bob is a block away!" And you need data to see your friends if you're on the move.

tiger_handheld
02-08-2009, 08:00 AM
I have it installed on the work BB, and already added one friend to the list..

* thinking about creating a group so we can all track each other, rename u as the username , say Hi when i see you at Espot or in Richmond ;)

This is also good for company BB's - to make sure the employee is really sick:)

Hmm...the problem can be easily fixed: Don't use it. :lol
Google Latitude’s #1 Problem Can’t Be Fixed (http://www.mobileindustryreview.com/2009/02/google_latitudes_1_problem_cant_be_fixed.html)
Published by Ewan (http://www.mobileindustryreview.com/author/admin/) on Sunday 8th February 2009, 11:56 | Filed under: Mobile Applications (http://www.mobileindustryreview.com/category/mobile_applications)
You can’t fix trust. Not with a click of a button.
Have a read of this:
1 in 3 Australians will snoop in the phones of their partners (according to a Virgin Mobile survey).
60% of them do it when their partner is in the shower. 41% do it with their partner in view.
(quote from Tomi Ahonen’s presentation at Future of Mobile 2008.)
Principally I suspect the ’snooping’ is looking at text messages and recent call lists.
Now if it’s that bad without sticking ‘location’ into the mix, how is it going to be when the masses take a look at Google Latitude?
How many relationships — business and personal — are about to get absolutely nailed by the fact that your friends and partners can *SEE* where you are. Or where you were?
Witness the following frequently used explanations that I often overhear:
Chap: I’m still in the office
Google Latitude: He’s over the other side of London. With friends Graham, Paul. And, er — if you check out that Kate girl’s blog, you’ll see her Latitude puts her within 100m of him.
Chap: I’m just at the shops buying you something in that underwear shop!
Google Latitude: He’s at PC World, about a mile away from any shops that might sell underwear.
Chap: (Text message) I’m just getting on the train.
Google Latitude: He hasn’t left the office.
Chap: NO? I’m not out with the guys. I’m just getting a sandwich then I’m on my way home.
Google Latitude: Before he switched me off, he was sitting next to ‘the guys’. And that bitch girl Kate was heading this year. That was an hour ago. That’s all I know, right?
Chap: Sorry boss, I’m stuck in the snow and I won’t be able to get into work.
Google Latitude: Rubbish! He’s at the leisure park near work — next to the cinema!
Teenager: I’m, er, just going to the shops to get a can of Coke. Back in 20.
Google Latitude: He’s round that Vicky-girl’s house again.
Teenager: Yeah I’m at school. So what, mum?
Google Latitude: He’s not in school. He’s not in the same town actually. Ask him how he got to the next town?
And so on.
Despite the fact that Latitude has bucketloads of privacy goodness, the use of this technology is going to take quite a while to get a hang of…

Currently Google Latitude cannot be installed on the iPhone. An Engadget report (http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/04/google-latitude-coming-to-other-devices-iphone-included/) posted on February 4th 2009, claims that Latitude will be released on the iPhone soon. From the article, Google Latitude currently works with:

-Android devices (T-Mobile G1)
-most colour Blackberry devices
-most Windows Mobile 5.0+ devices
-most Symbian S60 devices (Nokia smartphones)
-many Java enabled (J2ME) phones
