2.0GT for 30xxx I'm liking this. Just get a cobbs tuning ECU upgrade and that EVOX engine should be pushing EVOX numbers that's 280 290HP. ;) It IS doing 210bhp with 87 octane gas for fuck's sake.

damn I have to take my word back or not ever getting a Hyundai. The current Hyundai are quite mechanically reliable. Feels like there's a premium on the japanese cars now.

Don't be offended guys. It's just my opinion. I am putting this down because I know AT LEASE one of you will not agree with me.

so GT only adds Brembos... not suspension?

It also includes a limited slip differential, 19" rims, and HID's (to the 4 cylinder model). I think with the 6 cylinder, the GT just adds the bremobs). Personally I think the 4 cylinder base is where it's at, a nice set of custom rims, lower it a bit, a good boost controller, and some 94 octane :)

Hyundai definitely got this halo car the right time the right way. Economy is bad, supercars aren't going to cut it.

this, however, checks all the boxes for someone who just want a sexy coupe that's driving the proper wheels while sipping 87 octane gas.

AND package it so it appears to be full of potential. It certainly is based on its equipment. But they skimped on the frills and bit to keep the entry price more than reasonable.

If 240Z made Datsun what it is today, Genesis Coupe will be what makes Hyundai in 10 years. Just because things move so fast now compared to 1970s.

It only makes sense.

02-09-2009, 04:06 PM
Must get. Lot's of different models to choose from as well. I would prob go for the 4 cylinder in the premium or GT.

Both my parents already drive Hyundai's, I may as well join em. Going to have to wait till I finish grad school in 2012 though.

.Renn.Sport

No need, both engines are made to run on 87!
It says somewhere in that article

you get more HP with 94 according to Hyundai

but i'd definitely get a proper tuned ecu map to use with 94 octane and get the original 290HP+ out of the 4B11. with some bolt-on 400-500HP is easily within reach with this car.

the 4B11 is what made this car so attractive, if hyundai put the same old 4 banger from the Tiberon, no one would be interested in this car even if it was sold for less then 20k

Timpo
02-09-2009, 04:58 PM
ok According to Hyundai, the Genesis Coupe will smoke the Mustang GT, and they're priced lower, looks better and better reliability.

Genesis Coupe

3.8L 6 speed - $32,995
3.8L ZF Auto - $34,795
3.8L GT 6 speed (full load) -$34,995
3.8L GT ZF Auto - $36,795

Mustang GT

(add $1,250 for auto tranny)
Coupe 5speed - $33,999
California 5speed - $36,699
Convertible 5speed - $38,099
California Convertible 5speed - $40,799

20-30 years ago, the [insert_Japanese_brand_badge_here] badge ruined the whole car too. Stop being stupid.

The interior looked really nice, I didn't sit in it but from what it looks, the material looks pretty good, it didn't have the cheap plastic looking.

I was not impressed with the exterior tho, it didn't look that cool. Maybe because it was bone stock.

the 4B11 2.0T is alot more fun... EVO engine FTW

it would be costly to mod a 2.0T. at least 15K to get it up to 300ish hp.

No way man. Pretty simple actually.

-Injectors: $400
-Engine Management (AEM F/iC): $450
-Boost Controller: $500
-Air/Water pre cooler (small air water inercooler to assist air/air intercooler): $400
- Water Pump - $100
- Reservoir - $ 200
- Fab - $200
- Misc Parts - $200

$2450

Should be able to make 300HP easy with that.

If this 4B11T is the same as the one in the evo, a simple tune will boost it up to around 230-240 rwhp, assuming stock hp rwhp is around 180-190. I have a feeling that the stock turbo would run out of breath at around 320-340 rwhp though...

and the production looks very similiar! i wouldnt mind owning one. Can't wait to see some track reviews on this car. doesnt look to agile from the drift video... either that or the driver is a noob. The only thing that it could do without is the dip in the rear quarter window.... if it was straight up it would go better with the lines of the car.

Long read ahead if interested......

I test drove a base 2.0T this afternoon at North shore Hyundai. Pulling in with a G35 coupe the salesman was quite interested to throw me the keys for a back to back comparison. Initial impression was that they did a very nice copy of a 9/10th version of my car , right down to the same door handle pull action and window dip.

Very similar seating position and pedal/wheel layout. Trunk has a smaller opening but again almost duplicate features and contours.
Fit and finish were for sure up to par with current japanese standards (ie-honda, not the current crappy toyota scratchable plastics).

Starting it up you get a real 4 cyl sense and very boomy sound off idle, super light clutch and slightly clunky shifter with a vague disconnect as you shift but revs really nice and I found myself holding 4000rpm often just to roll on the throttle as it pulls quite nice. I can feel the ECU doing a slight weird jerky dance as it feathers boost or timing as you run through the rev range in the higher gears.

The boost through the first 3 gears comes on fast but with that strange floating rev between shifts that they do now, like the old Contour SVTs..took a couple of shifts to get used to it right away, Very nice heavy on centre weight added to the steering, but quick when you rotate the wheel during cornering. Compaired to my neutral weight feeling G35 the Genesis feels 1000 pounds lighter on its feet.

When on the gas powering out of a tight corner I found the stability control very intrusive, almost like it shared software with my Infiniti..I was not able to feel if the base had any sort of LSD as described in the articles I have read, and the salesman was not sure.. he was also not too comfortable with me turning the Trac off as I ripped through some twists off taylor way. :) (at 50kph)
Overall I have to give it a thumbs up for sure as an alternative to a used G37 /G37, and a for sure pick over any other current compact coupe in its price range (26Gs!!!)

I asked him to call me when the 2.0T GT comes in as that is one I would like to see more, for some reason the V6 is just not appealing to me even and having driven the 2.0T I feel the added lump of the 6pot will take away from the nice light feel they have in the turbo.

longest post ever.

02-13-2009, 07:18 PM
i saw some korean review thing on youtube.. and they descibed the shifter not feeling very smooth and pretty clunky... and also that floating rpm feeling with slow pedal response because the vehicle is drive by wire..

Rikaro

How much cheaper is this compared to the G35?

hk20000
02-13-2009, 07:44 PM
the floaty RPM is a modern day emissions thing as the throttle is closed at a controlled speed.

That should be a common thing these days where drive-by-wire are used. Give it some time and someone will make a "hax0r box" to connect between the pedal and the pedal angle sensor and cure that funny feeling. They have that stuff even on a HIACE so I don't see how the same company would want to miss the boat on this big mainstream market.

go to the dealer and act like an adult who is looking for a car.

These are some PROTIP:

appear in a car in the price range, or get driven there as though you don't have a car
appear in clothes that look professional
appear in a courtesy car / rental car also helps tell them you just crashed your ride LOL.

Chat with them with some enthusiasm but avoid talking about performance and drifting amd you should be able to get in a car and test driving in no time.

This is all about the excitment around a cheap well designed RWD 2+2 coupe, something that was totally missing in the current market.

Add a turbo and LSD to the mix with zero KM and 5 years warrenty? Come on, you would have to turn in your enthusiast card if that didnt stir anything..

+And yes I agree the boost issue may have been the octane, plus it was almost out of gas. The thing loses 10HP when run with regular so the active knock sensor must be very active.

Vulgate

In the 80's, many people made the former comment about Honda and Toyota. Believe it or not, society and companies evolve. Nothing stays the same.

Most "true" car enthusiasts already know that Hyundai has been beating the competition in many facets including reliability for a few years.

Most "true" car enthusiasts can appreciate a 2.0T, RWD, 6spd, LSD equipped sport coupe priced well below the competition regardless of what kind of clothes it wears.

Most badge-whore, armchair reviewers are still living in the 80's.

Get a fucking clue.

Being the afacionado (?) that I am I went to test drive it.

And I love that thing. LOVE LOVE LOVE XOXOXO.

Glitches are there of course at such price:
Gear shifter feels plasticky for throw. I never missed a shift the whole way but it just feels plasticky....like shifter on a cheap Korean car should....oh wait.
Interior has rattle AT NEW CAR on A pillars
4B11 could be more refined...Ticking away at idle...Mitsubishi step your game up!
That floating revs make smooth shifting actually difficult (it's a car that demands you to shift slower....that sort of kills the mood)
Steering wheel has no telescopic adjustment so the fit would be a case-by-case basis.
Headroom in the rear seat is problematic if you are taller than 5'5"

Good things. Oh man this list is going to be long:
Excellent traction - the sales man was new and we totally hit that TCS off button and mash the throttle. Even without LSD the car is able to launch itself out of corner with much grace and very little drama - with much enthusiasm the tires still hold on to the road despite the tires being Bridgestone RE92s.
Very very sorted suspension - the car corners basically flat. If I don't tell you you'd think it's running on coilovers. But the shocks and springs take up the railroad track like nothing. The balance is going for the slight understeering at limit with 4 people (never really pushed that hard but the balance of the car seems to be tuned to understeer)
The NVH is kept at such a low level that it beats the crap out of the MZ6 2.3MZR I drove there in. It kept the vibration minimal while delivering exciting exhaust note.
Turbo lag is kept to a minimum but I don't know if that's a good thing. With my daily driver a 4WD Mitsubishi with 2 turbos I sort of got spoiled by the sudden kick in the back when turbo comes in (picture fast and furious hitting nitros kind of face, on my face) the stock 4B11 setup is very subtle for boost you can barely hear the BOV. I'm suspecting that the boost is kept at a very low level.
Rear seats - I can't believe the amount of legroom it maintained for the back passenger when my 6ft friend was driving. But headroom is an issue (see bad things)
Steering feels heavy - European car style heavy. But the sensitivity at limit could be improved - but then we were on BS RE92 so I would think that would improve with better tires equipped.
Seats - those seat would feel right at home installed on a 50K car. They are that good. premium package has the exact same seat with power and heat.

Overall I really really adore the packaging of the car. It's just no non-sense fun toy kick in the pants fun every time you drive the car. It reminds us of why the Nissan 240SX was so popular as a platform. The Genesis Coupe brings back the Z approach - sure it might look like it's copies of other cars in many ways but the recipe is just right. With that pricing I would say we have a true winrar that was absent for at least a decade.

Looking forward to the used models pricing to come down so I can get my grubby hands on one....

Apparently the factory turbo is much smaller than the EVO one....

so chipping it to 300HP is physically impossible. To get to EVOX power you are going to need a turbo and/or intercooler swap...

It's actually a base model 2.0T. Just squeezed in the budget, no moneys for the track package, and I didn't want anything from the premium. also didn't want the 3.8.

I'm pretty happy with the color, it looks a lot better in person, or in better pictures I'd imagine. I originally wanted the grey(not the silvers, yuck), but it looks like everyone else does too, so it would be everywhere, and they will be a bit of a wait to get here.

Driving it is great. I've never had a new car before and the closest thing i've had to a new car experience is driving the parents 02 RSX auto. Big difference heh.
Handling is a lot better than I expected, it took a while to get used to it, and I had to be careful at first, but eventually opened it up and hit some corners. Very flat around corners, ride isn't too stiff, but it's stiffer than most new cars I've driven as a mechanic for the last year. I can only imagine what the GT/Track feels like with the bigger sway bars and tuned suspension.
I like the tires, I've always been a fan of Potenzas and I'm not let down with these. 245s in the rear don't want to let go, even with TC off in the rain and some encouragment. It's pretty confidence inspiring so far. I havn't experienced under or oversteer yet, but I havn't pushed tooo far yet hehe.

Power feels very similar to my last skyline, which had a 3" turbo-back, air pod, 13psi and an RB20det. Genesis feels like it has a bit more go to it, less turbo lag and a much quicker spool up, but the Skyline wouldn't run out of breath as easily as the genesis does with it's toddler sized snail.

A few weeks and some dry weather will bring a better review and some decent pictures.

Also have to say thanks to Trevor at Jim Pattison Hyundai on the north shore for being a great salesperson. No pressure, didn't look at me like a punk kid who drove in with a $500 beater full of snowboard gear (which I did) and it was an overall great experience.

Took a 6spd 2.0T out for a quick boot today, and a auto yesterday, both premium trim. Overall, I am VERY impressed with the quality of the ride, and interior. The interior finish, and feel reminds me of the new 2010 Mazda 3's. The biggest complaints I have are the rear window/lack of visibility when backing up (but in a sports car that can't really be counted against it can it?), and I absolutely HATED the feel of the shifter.

So I went to the dealership in Kelowna today, they have a brand new 2.0GTTouring in Black.. Sooo sexy (can't believe i used 'sexy' to describe a hyundai)

-Finance rate is 2.6% for up to 84 mths..
-got some $$ from the service department.. Just to have an idea as to how much running costs would add up for the 2.0T.. I was blown away (not because it was super pricey, but it's cheap!).. It uses regular dyno oil.. Service 1 is only $29.99... A timing belt job on this car is only $299 (when it requires it..)...

Hmm, now should I let the dealership rape me on the trade-in value of my car.. :(

Seems like the turbo is not big enough for the engine, boost is dropping constantly from 2900 rpm, turbo upgrade time! ;)

The nice thing though is the turbo's hotside isn't integrated into the exhaust manifold like some recent turbo cars, and it looks like a pretty standard mitsu td04 of some sort - upgrading will be easy.

nothing it's just 5yr bumper 2 bumper and that's awesome.

Apparently the factory turbo is much smaller than the EVO one....

so chipping it to 300HP is physically impossible. To get to EVOX power you are going to need a turbo and/or intercooler swap...

easy peasy to throw a T88 on there and bump that power band up from 2600rpm to above redline!

I gotta figure out how hyundai feels about warranty and changing key parts like turbo and fuel system etc.

big time.
Man I'd love to build a stainless header/turbo kit for one of these things.

the Hyundai badge ruins the whole car.

why didn't they bring the Genesis brand? I heard that Hyundai was trying to bring the Genesis brand here just like Lexus, Acura and Infiniti.

Totally. If I buy this thing, the badge will be the first thing to go. What should I put in its place?
