Okay, I'm clean, but I just searched my wife's name, and she has a criminal history!

edit: looked at the file, just a traffic violation ticket :p Anyways, she submitted a letter to dispute the ticket, got confirmation that they they received the dispute request, but never got a court date. The offense was from May 08, and it says "sworn date of Sep 12 08". What does that mean? :confused:

As far as i know, if you have a name similar to someone that has a criminal record, they will ask that you go get ur fingers printed. My uncle had to get that done because there was someone with a similar chinese name in the system.

FYI, all this public information relating to charges and/or convictions is just the tip of the iceberg.

As an aside, this is all just BC court information. If you have out-of-province charges and convictions, it wouldn't show up there.

When you go get a record check for a job, the search the government and police agencies conduct is much much more in-depth. I wouldn't necessarily rest easy and think that your record is clean just because your name is not on the BC court system that you're record free. Just be aware that any negative contact that you've had with the police (even those that don't lead to arrests or charges) could potentially show up on a record check as most record checks nowadays are police information checks as opposed to the more limited-in-scope criminal record checks (ie: only charges and convictions).

To know more about what the police have on you, make a freedom of information request or access to information privacy request to the municipal police agency or RCMP detachment, respectively, that you've had contact with.

Obviously, they might not be able to release EVERYTHING to you in the interest of not harming an ongoing police investigation, etc.

Its amazing how many time people interact with the police without getting any charges or a record.
