Should I buy an RX8??
Hey my buddy wants to sell me his 04 black mazda rx8. He has stock rims that he painted black and has black intr. He has 5% tint on back and rear side windows and i think 50 or 30% on the side. Its a 4 speed auto with f1 tip shifters. It has about 6x xxx km. I love every thing about it but the only gay thing is that its a rotary engine and its a rebuilt. He said he'll see to me for around $7,000. Should i buy?

I would stay away from rebuilt cars, and the auto doesn't sound very incisive.
Anyways as much of a deal you think you're getting, it won't be much. That's probably around what it's worth. I know I wouldn't pay more than that if I was a buyer.

That 4speed auto gearbox works as hard as a swollen pig. Around 190hp from this Rotary? That's CRAP. I have heard MAZDA overrated the RX-8 and got into big trouble?
I would buy the car and part out every single part. :)
Buy it and sell it for more.

uhhh. you obviously don't know much about rotaries.
it being rebuilt is a GOOD thing.. not bad.
but it's still automatic = gay.
overall the RX8 is a great car. It's a bit down on power, but it makes up for it 10 fold with the chassis. absolutly one of the best handling cars I've driven in the past year.
For 7k I say go for it. Just bring it in to a Mazda dealer and have them do a compression test with a PROPER rotary compression tester.

yea man i'd stay away from rebiult cars; plus the fact that it's a rotary engine. That's going to add up to a whole buncha problems in the long runn. Unless your really down to baby the car which is going to be costly. haha

for $7k, go for it. Do remember, plan to keep the car for a while as rebuild cars do not hold their value so you better like this car. Also, do you think gas prices will hold steady at current levels or do you predict it will go back up? as RX8s have horrible gas mileage.

if it's rebuilt engine and if it's a manual i'd say yes...the 4 speed automatic is totally not worth it...while it's a fantastic price i wouldn't go for it.

I'm thinking of trading my car for a RX-8 too..but manual transmission for me tho.
But yeah..my main concern is the rotary engine built and reliability. Oh and don't expect to get good fuel economy on this car..Its one of those sacrifices I'm willing to make if I do buy this car.

I work at a Mazda dealership. The auto's are no fun, especially the 4speeds. Stay away. There's nothing wrong with the rotary engine in the RX-8's. In a 1.5 yrs working there I've only seen 2 come in with major engine problems. One of on warranty, the other was because the guy ran it dry of oil and fucked it up himself. Handles too good, but yes, could use more power. For $7000, it could potentially be a good deal, but that 4speed auto tranny just sucks.
I've drinv it a couple times and its a blast, so killer around corners you can take them at any speed and i love the f1 paddle shifters . He took it to a mazda dealership last week for a new crank sensor casue it wouldn't start. He got new spark plugs and a new batter. Now it runs great. The mazda guys told him he needs a new catilatic converterwitch should give him some more power so he's gonna pick that up next week or sometime soon. He loves that car but he wants some thing thats cheaper on gas and a stick.
By the way the body was rebuilt not the engine.

You are internested in a RX-8 but you think having a rotary engine is gay?

From my personal experience, 4 speed auto sux! Unless you absolutely have to own an Auto, or else, get a Manual RX-8.
Regarding the rebuilt title, if you trust your friend enough, then go for it~ But forget about selling it later down the road.
The renesis should be ok as long as you keep up with the maintenance.. I was also able to get 13L/100km when driven really conservatively, but redline once per trip to clean out the carbon buildups

N/A rotary is very reliable and has much less moving parts that reciprioating engines.
And Mazda is extending this eight year/100,000 mile warranty retroactively to all RX-8s built between 2004 and 2008 so what's the concern? Blow one and get a new one swapped in for free.

Don't get an auto RX-8. The stick and auto version is quite different in specs.
And when I testdrove teh auto RX-8, it didn't impress me. Felt on par with the Mazda3 in the acceleration.

If a 2004 car got an engine rebuilt, let alone a chassis rebuild, I'd STAY AWAY from it.
how hard do you have to drive it to justify an engine rebuild in 5 years?

not hard at all, if you only need to idle it with no engine oil for a few minutes

I would buy it as a fun weekend car. Nothing more, nothing less.
If you have to think twice about $7k, then you'll think three times about the gas, and four times at the maintenance headaches.
