Human rights complaint against UBC will go ahead

A former UBC engineer's complaint against the university will go ahead at the BC Human Rights Tribunal.
The woman says she was discriminated against because the unversity didn't provide her with a proper shower and changeroom.
Shelly Frick was one of a few female power engineers at the UBC steam plant.
She says the university has failed to provide her and her female coworkers with a change room, lockers and showers which are separate from their male co-workers.
After she asked for separate facilities, the university provided a shower in a separate office building about four blocks away.
Frick says what the university has offered isn't good enough....she wants an award of 25-thousand dollars.
UBC wants the complaint dismissed, but the BC Human Rights Tribunal is letting it go ahead to a full hearing.

money grab for sure, although what UBC did is wrong too
Sounds like a money grab. As much as I feel bad for her not having facilities in the same building, it's not like UBC didn't provide her with any. They offered facilities in another building. Sure it's an inconvenience, but is she expecting UBC to tear down and build something for her when there's other facilities available? Are people THAT lazy these days that they don't want to walk a few buildings over?

Canada has shown that it will give in to every minority group that complains.
BC is upholding this long standing tradition of giving in.
In the end, it will have been cheaper to build a women's washroom.

Quick fix: close the shower/locker facility period. Showers/lockers are not a requirement for employment. We'll see how much her coworkers love her then.

Money grab. She should be seeking reform, not monetary compensation.

You couldn't have said it any better!
So if she gets the money, what's she gonna do after that? Build her own change room on premises? Walk the 4 blocks to the other change room? The original issue still isn't solved.

Well-said. She should sue them and make them build a women's changeroom if she won the case. NOT hoard all the money and call it quits on the issue.

I guess UBC will have to get with the times as female enrollment in engineering is rising.

$25k is reasonable imho. It's not like she's asking for $500k.
And no as much as I am against unreasonable feminism, I'd say UBC does have an obligation to build a facility in the same buiding for women if they're hiring them. This isn't 1960. As for the rest of you, ever see how dirty it can get being a steam (or any other facilities for that matter) engineer? This isn't some mall job. How would you like it if you had to walk 4 blocks to the washroom from your workplace? Also, these might be 4 big blocks. For all I know she's walking from West Mall to Wesbrook for these showers. Having worked in facilities management for 4 years at UBC and other large sites, I completely sympathize (though I have never used the showers personally, boy are they disgusting :lol)
With that said though, let's see if she'll drop the case if UBC offers to build her the facilities.

cool, musta been nice being in that class ... that is if they were hot
$25k for what she had to endure seems fair.. and it should result in reform because UBC should take it as a lesson learned and make changes so they dont have to payout $25k or MORE to other female students... like her fellow female classmates

hahahah... so true, she's probably on the brink of getting fired and is trying to take them down... whatever, that's cheap, cheaper than most people's tuition.

Epic win.
If she does anything other than donate the money to some form of women's rights charity, she just another money grubbing hormone bag who can't understand normal thinking.
As for bitching about how dirty the work is, there are plenty of people working far dirtier jobs (:hi:) that don't have access to showers at all. Hell, when I was doing more industrial work, we didn't even have a shitter or running water. I had to drive more than 4 blocks to Timmies just to drop th Browns off at the Superbowl.
$25k is reasonable imho. It's not like she's asking for $500k.
Maybe there's a purpose behind $25k? Maybe she purposely made it small enough to be swept under the rug and increase the chances of a quick settlement.
Other than that, I can't imagine how else she would come to the figure of $25k anyways? Did she walk 4 blocks and and it dawned on her that this hike is worth that much?
Just another opportunistic leech of society IMO.

I'm guessing the price tag got set by the lawyer based on being low enough to not be thrown out for being frivolous, but high enough to dwarf the cost to add a female facility to the building, just to drive the point home that the school was being retarded

hum, you are right, this isn't the 60's. Men and Women aren't so concerned about cooties anymore, and people actually *gasp* SHARE bathrooms. imagine that!

It's not bathrooms, it's showers. Kind of different.

If I remember the steam plant at UBC correctly, it was built a LONG time ago. It would cost UBC a lot to upgrade the plumbing and build new showers...$25K is peanuts. It would have cost them at least 4 times to build a new shower room.
If she wins this case, it will set a precedent in other buildings at UBC.
