: Car dealer on hook for illegally armoured BMW

An armour-plated Bacon beemer has been seized by Chilliwack RCMP. The extensively modified bulletproof black BMW 745i leased by the notorious Bacon brothers was found abandoned near Prest Road and Highway 1.

The RCMP seized the Bacons’ beemer because the heavy steel plating and bulletproof glass made the car overweight and illegal to drive.

“It was registered to the Bacons,” said Chilliwack RCMP Const. Angie Bowie. “It’s been taken off the road.

“The plates are seized, and it’s gone back to the leasing company.” The Bacon brothers leased the high-end 2003 BMW — the equivalent 2009 750i lists for $104,900 plus taxes — from Coquitlam-based Four Star Auto Lease.

From photos posted on the Internet, it’s unclear if the bulletproof glass and heavy steel plating were ever needed to save their bacon.

“It was leased to Jonathan Bacon, with James Bacon listed as the principal operator,” said a Four Star Auto Lease employee who asked for anonymity.

“It’s about $80,000 to $90,000 to convert it, and I think our president has talked to the Toronto outfit that fixed it,” said the employee.

The problem now is that Four Star has an extensively modified vehicle that’s illegal in Canada.

“I’m not sure exactly what we are going to do with it — we’re stuck with it,” said the worker.

“We might be able to sell it to the Middle East or South America, where there’s a demand for these sorts of vehicles.”

In the meantime, Four Star is pursuing legal avenues to recoup their losses.

“The only thing we can do is try to get some money back,” said the worker.

if they wanted to anything, they should just go sue the bacons for the cost of the vehicle, which i highly doubt they would because they are really good customers of coquitlams four star autolease. Plus four star is a bunch of idiot, you know how much a car like that would fetch in the states? more then what they were selling for, for sure

How did the cops figure out it's armoured? Because when you open the door it feels like it weighs a million pounds, that's how.

I think it's important to note that it's not actually illegal to armour plate the car. It is illegal to make it overweight. There is a maximum GVWR on the side of your door sill. You cannot exceed that, even if you modify the springs, etc etc.

i'm confused from all this... they have all the bacon brothers under 24/7 surveillance don't they? they even have a camera on a light pole right across the street from one of their homes... how could they suddenly find this car "abandoned" by the side of the road? who left it there?

it would be funny if this applied in the US as well, because that would mean president obama's presidential limousine "BEAST" would also be illegal and should be confiscated too :p

I don't think any of the bullet proof glass is DOT which fails no matter the weight. plus side windows require to be able to open / close by law.

the owner of my company has a bullet proof SUV. But his lawyers are probbaly alot better then Bacons!

There was also another vehicle, that was also equipped with armored protection probably by somebody else. In that case, the leasing company confiscating the Mercedes back.

The windows of bulletproof cars usually goes down to about 4 inches, and this is only for the driver and the passenger side only. The rear windows are fixed. And they open hella slow.

back to the main thread. I don't understand why the dealership has it back. the cops can't seize it just because it fails the MVA. all they can do is give it a box1 VI and tow it to the bacon's driveway. at which point it's still bacons and he's still required to make payments on it.

Like what johny said, his family might be worth quite a few coin and spending a bit for their peace of mind is prolly worth $100k.

Then again, on a leased car.. hmmm DD? hehe

"Car dealer on hook for illegally armoured BMW"

Love how the headline suggests it's illegal for a car to be armoured, and not because it's overweight. Reporting at its best!

If it's a lease, it belongs to the leasing party at all times, unless the car is bought out by the driver. It can be reposessed at any time if payments are missed. (which is probably what happened, Totem used to repo cars & trucks ALL THE TIME from gang members)

Also, there's probably some law that allows for the reposession or seizure of "proceeds of crime" like drug money, weapons, cars, etc etc etc..

And the point about the bullet proof glass being non-DOT and therefore illegal is also true.

It was the "Tony Soprano Special Edition"?. It had been illegally modified with non-approved parts & was overweight. I also read somewhere that the VIN # was missing or not attached/visible. All illegal under the MVA. Use any legal tool possible to get these out of circulation.

four star auto lease knows very well who they are leasing to. they are shady and make plenty of money leasing these cars. trust me they made money on this deal they aren't on the hook for anything.
