: Olympic rings to light up airport

Visitors to Vancouver are now being welcomed by a set of 15-metre-tall, illuminated Olympic rings as they leave Vancouver International Airport.

The rings are the first in a series which are being erected by the Ministry of Transportation.

On Thursday at 6 p.m. B.C. Premier Gordon Campbell will officially light the rings, which are made up of more than 20,000 low-energy LED lights.

According to one Province source, it will cost $3 per day to power the lights.

A government news release says the rings can be programmed "for stunning light displays."

Two other candidates for sets of rings are believed to be the Burrard Street Bridge and the Lions Gate Bridge and there's been speculation that a giant, illuminated set of rings may be placed on the North Shore mountains.

Colin Hansen, Minister responsible for the 2010 Winter Games confirmed that the cost of the rings at Vancouver International Airport is $1.3 million.

1.3 million isn't gonna do anything for the DTES. An article from last week or the week before stated they spent about 365 million on the DTES for the 08 calender year? That's ~1 million/day.

When it comes to government spending, a million is peanuts but I do have to say that this 1.3 million could have been spent in better ways instead on some "stunning light displays".

$1.4B has poored (pun intended) into the DTES already with no visible change (other than an increase in the population of homeless).

Considering Vancouverites desire to waste tax money on the homeless (a problem that cannot be fixed, mentally ill people need to be hospitalized) I'm all for wasting $1.4B on the Olympics. I'll at least enjoy the Olympics, I don't enjoy the DTES.

How do you get creative on a Logo that's not allowed to be altered? It's the Olympic Rings afterall.

well that's kind of off topic for this subject. You could find hundreds of things that should take focus over this.

How about it?

I didn't realize that there was a homeless persons tax. Don't you think that homeless people "pay taxes" by living out on the streets every night? Did you know that there are homeless people in vancouver area who have jobs and pay taxes? Just because people live on the street, it doesn't make them less human than you. Get out of the bubble you live in and get some knowledge before posting retarded statements like this.

If they spent that much then you would think that homelessness should be done and over. They need a way better game plan because that is a lot of money spent with not much result.

Anyways, not trying to start a flame war.

Ask him why the F they cost 1.3 million!

Can these rings (with the proper colours) be seen from both sides? I saw these last night around 8:30pm, heading on to Arthur Lang towards Vancouver, and I could barely see a white glow from that side... Wasn't that impressive, to be honest...

Hey! Don't say that, I care what you have to say. And what you said isn't logical considering we've spent at least 1 TRILLION dollars on the DTES drug problem, on everything from special cases courts (special sentencing for drug addicted ppl, judge is very caring, asks offender how he's doing today and what he thinks he can do to change himself, etc) to safe injection sites, stricter policing, drug awareness, safe houses, ETC.

Basically, we have tried EVERYTHING possible! Yes, everything you can throw at the DTES, we've tried it. Nothing works. Try turning the drug/sex trade of Thailand around first before even thinking 1 trillion/5 years will do anything

i didnt mean be creative on the LOGO. I mean with the tecnology we have lately, im sure they can come out with different method of doing things less costly.

i just thought 1.3 million is alot, you can probably structure out a 2 stories commercial building.

ask him why it cost us 1.3mill and wtf was our province thinking?

look at china's olympics compared to ours. ours is going to SUCK!! each venue is KM's apart from each other, we have a lot of grid-lock traffic between each venue, and we're already going over budget on everything.

"but this is vancouvers time to shine on the world, we'll stimulate our economy"
we'll stimulate the construction side of things until after the olympics, when the dust and hype settles, all the workers are unemployed and the job market gets flooded. then we're stuck with high property values and high tax. like anyones going to want to move to vancouver for that

1.3 million is a lot considering the olympic rings only hold significant relevance during the time of the olympics. after that, it'll just serve as an expensive reminder that we once hosted the olympics!!

Here's what we did right before: we DIDN'T build a 1.3million dollar sign that said Expo '86

You can't compare China's Olympics to ours.

Summer Olympics >>> Winter Olympics
China's govt doesn't need to ask for permission to build x.
China population > *
China wants to be first in everything; Canada doesn't mind being somebody else's bitch (i.e. US' lapdog).

But yeah, I'm dying to know how that dinky structure cost 1.3 million.

Sure you can do it cheaper, but who knows why the cost was inflated to $1.3 million. Perhaps the price was not a reflection of its aesthetical design but instead, a reflection of its structural integrity? Possibly designed to withstand anything short of gale force winds or repeated torrential rain?

Don't know really know if that's the case but I'm just putting it out there that sometimes value isn't always displayed on aesthetics alone.
