5 Video Gaming consoles that failed miserably

Nokia released this cell phone-cum-gaming platform in 2003, and blessed it with a handset design that made unfortunate users look like they were attempting to eat a taco with their ear. Unsurprisingly, it was not a success. The N-Gage brand lives on as a games service for other smartphones, but saddled with such an impractical hardware layout, the N-Gage itself has long been consigned to history's scrap pile.
http://l.yimg.com/a/i/us/ga/buzz/feature/vg18/gizmondo_600_getty.jpg
Explaining the whole story of the Gizmondo would fill a good-sized book, and you'd never believe it anyway. It's straight out of a Robert Ludlum thriller, featuring wrecked million-dollar sports cars, illegal weapons, and even the Swedish Mafia. Sadly, this sordid tale is also far more entertaining than any of the Gizmondo's grand total of eight games. Not even ahead-of-its-time data connectivity and GPS hardware could prevent it from sinking like a stone, although amazingly, a follow-up system is rumored to be launching later this year.
http://l.yimg.com/a/i/us/ga/buzz/feature/vg18/publi-vectrex_600.jpg
The Vectrex gave 1982's discerning video game consumer the chance to put a mini-arcade machine in their living room. Unfortunately for its makers, it came out just in time to catch the full force of the infamous collapse of the video games industry in 1983-84. Despite a series of price cuts that remain the quickest and deepest in console history, it vanished from stores a mere 18 months after its debut.
http://l.yimg.com/a/i/us/ga/buzz/feature/vg18/virtualboy--article_image_combined_600.jpg
Although various consoles have been linked to health problems, Nintendo's Virtual Boy is one of the most notorious. Its iconic design allowed true 3D graphics, but came with the undesirable side-effect of inducing nauseating headaches in a number of users. Spurned by consumers in its day, it's now a sought-after collectors' item.
http://l.yimg.com/a/i/us/ga/buzz/feature/vg18/saturnconsolemv4_600.jpg
You might find it hard to believe that Sony was once an outsider in the console hardware market, but back in 1994 it most certainly was. If the Saturn had had its way, it would have stayed that way. Released by Sega almost four full months ahead of the original Playstation, the Saturn was a bold effort to undermine Sony's success before it had a chance to begin. Overpriced, overcomplicated, and outsold almost immediately by the Playstation, Sega was already hyping the Saturn's replacement just two years after its launch.

what about dreamcast?
Dreamcast was way better than Saturn. You could even play burnt games without having to go through the process of getting a mod chip haha.

I was going to mention that one or Genesis. There was also Intellivision as well which was ridiculously expensive and had very poor graphics even for its time.
haha as soon as I read the topic I thought of virtual boy. I remember renting that thing from blockbuster with mario tenis or something. I remember being able to play for about 5 minutes before feeling ill, taking it off and feeling like I was going blind.

It's funny how the systems that were supposedly more powerful and capable where the ones that had the least good games and the least good marketing, and consequently the least impressive sales numbers.

What about the Neo Geo? You had to be filthy rich in order to buy one and NO KID in my elementary school of 900 had one.
El Bastardo
03-07-2009, 12:49 AM
The Neo Geo coulda gone far too. It was a ballin' system.
Oh, and they forgot to add that Panasonic "Edu-tainment" system in there.
Farfetched
03-07-2009, 12:53 AM
what about dreamcast?
in terms of sales yes. otherwise, it was actually a very underrated system.

The SEGA SATURN had DUAL-CORE CPU!
I actually still have a Sega Saturn at home. I liked playing a game called " Mobile Suit Gundam:Geili's [greeed*]$$$$$". even the game is 12 years old now. I still wanna play it sometimes.
I also have a DreamCast at home and it is a great console. I bought it in Japan and it has the modem and stuff.
I never owned any Sony Video Consoles at all :D
WHEN I TYPED the proper way of spelling "greeed" and it became "$$$$$"???

The virtual boy is making a comeback!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=37hWzy5SGw0
but now less nauseating because you have 120Hz/2 = 60Hz = average LCD monitor refresh rate.
back then probably people were playing at like 15fps for the nauseating boy.

wats wrong with the saturn i loved playing it. and i also still have a dreamcast i used to play the NHL series on there it was sooo cool i remember you used to be able to poke check the goalie even when he covered up and you would score it was great.

I remember playing the Nintendo Virtual Boy at The Bay while my mom would be shopping. haha It was so god damn frustrating. I remember playing one game where you were a space ship flying around but since a wall would just be outlined, and a hole would just be outlined, you had no idea where to go. what a huge fail.
I also remember playing Sega Saturn at Costco while my mom would be shopping. haha.
as far as Dreamcast not making the list, I actually think Dreamcast was the best system out at the time. it was the predecessor to the first XBOX. it was better than N64 by a long way, and it was better than Playstation. and remember, it took PS2 nearly a year and a half before anyone could afford one. my buddy had one and we played it a TON in highschool. Dead or Alive 2 is still my favorite fighting game, and who can forget Tokyo Xtreme Racer?!

03-07-2009, 11:12 AM
what about dreamcast?
Ummm, no. Out of all of the consoles I've ever owned, the only one I've never gotten rid of is my Dreamcast - it is by far the best console I've owned.
Wykydtron
03-07-2009, 11:48 AM
Dreamcast love ftw! I love my Dreamcast. Prob now going to dig it out later tonight :D
I am a strong believer that the only reason it 'flopped' was because it was released in the shadow of the hype of the X-Box and what not.

dreamcast was awesome and had the best graphics for its time. sega just underestimated the avg consumers ability to burn an image to a disc. sucks. shenmue ftw
i thought genisis did pretty good. every other person i knew had one. sonic alone carried it.

Genesis was successful for its time it competed with Nintendo rather nicely.

I owned a genesis, saturn and dreamcast
Dreamcast was definitely an underrated system, 56k online gaming using net zero ftw.
If only Sega waited and used DVD's instead...

Panasonic 3DO was awesome. I dunno what you guys are talking about.

03-07-2009, 12:49 PM

3DO should be on there. What's the point if there aren't any games? Same goes for the Jaguar.
Someone mentioned Genesis? That's just crazy. That's where SEGA made a shit ton of money before the SNES hooked up with Street Fighter.
The Saturn is a North American anomaly. Plenty of awesome games but distribution paired with retailer ignorance was its downfall. Games like Panzer Dragoon Saga, Burning Rangers, and Shining Force III are still classics today. Not to mention the ton of other import games like Radiant Silvergun that are available for it. Saturn should definitely be off the list if you are counting quality.

Yeah, how was the Genesis a failure? I think it was one of Sega's more successful consoles.

Just a heads up for next time, least good = worst.
