Take that, trans fat: B.C. to ban artery-clogger from restaurants
wahyinghung
03-07-2009, 03:20 PM
The Campbell government hopes banning trans fat might just translate into votes come May 15, announcing Saturday that B.C. will be the first province to restrict the artery-clogger in restaurants.
"This is an effective way we can protect British Columbians' health," said Minister of Healthy Living Mary Polak in a release. The regulation — which will restrict industrially produced trans fats to two percent of total fat content for oils and spreadable margarines and to five percent of total fat content for all other foods — is part of B.C.'s new Public Health Act, and follows the recommendations of Health Canada's Trans Fat Task Force.
The government has partnered with the Heart and Stroke Foundation for the last year, consulting members of industry and preparing them for the change.
Food-service establishments that require a permit to operate, including restaurants, delis, cafeterias, schools, health-care institutions and bakeries, must comply with the new regulation by Sept. 30, 2009. Packaged foods that have a federally approved Nutrition Facts table and are sold directly to the consumer are exempt.
The Ministry of Healthy Living will set up a website and resources by the end of March to help businesses make the transition.

I personally think this is a good thing. One less thing to worry about when you go out to eat.
Speaking about trans fat, my son's friend brought a tin of Chinese egg rolls (cookie kind) over yesterday (LAN party). I tried one this morning. Holy shit, the fucking thing left a coating of lard on the roof of my mouth that I couldn't get rid of. It was totally gross. After coke and brandy and mouth wash, I finally got the taste out of my mouth. There's always a silver lining.......... the shit makes for good lip balm. I think it will still be moist for a good two or three days. WTF do they put in this shit? Never mind clogging your fucking arteries, this shit will clog your throat.
Edit: just checked the tin. The brand is called "Fat Choy". Made in China. I should have known. It's probably made of melamine.......... melamine lip balm.

Some of you are pretty ignorant, it is unnecessary to use hydrogenated oil to cook your food, every 1 gram per day increase in trans fat intake, the risk of heart disease
increases by 20%
Pocky used to have 5g of transfat and 5g of saturated fat, now it's only .5g of trans fat, average increase in price to consumer? nothing, same price.

Who wants to start an illegal trans fat ring? Let's start stocking up now and sell it at an inflated price when demand go up!! It'll be better than selling drugs....trans fat gang war is coming!!

Are people actually in uproar over this? Transfats really aren't good at all, so getting rid of them is a positive thing at the very least. Not like one could really tell from the taste of McCrapola's fries if it has transfat in it or not.

Actually, I can. But that's besides the point. In all seriousness, getting rid of trans fat is a good thing. It'll be interesting how it all pans out. Most of the major restaurant chains will/have complied, jumped on the bandwagon, and made it a big deal that they are doing their part.

You has transfat radar installed on your tongue? Baller.
Any hoo, sooner or later people will forget the tasty taste of transfat.
But if they tried the same for MSG...oh boy....1.6 billion angry Chinese will be...uh...angry.

Yep, but it got destroyed after I had one of the Chinese melamine injected egg rolls.

id honestly pay a premium to still get it. i can just see myself calling a guy in the middle of the night for some weed and greasy food.

Good step although imo, it's still personal choice...if people cared enough to cut out trans fats or anything unhealthy as a lifestyle choice, they would have already stopped consuming trans fats before the government banned them altogether.
Large portions of simple carbs such as white rice, pasta, candy, bread are bad for you too, does that mean they're going to restrict portion sizes at restaurants sooner or later?

Yes, that is EXACTLY what they are doing. They are forcing you to buy healthy.
You're a fucking idiot.
They are not forcing you to buy anything. They are taking away transfat item use from restaurants and lowering industrially produced transfats. No one is stopping you from buying a shitload of it and cooking it yourself.
You're the reason why I hate freedom. Fucking want to be anarchist.

Trans fats don't break down. There's no reason to be eating it. Food makers use it cuz they're lazy. They SHOULD ban it.
Animal fat is where it's at and 10x better for you. Go chow down on that if you guys are upset.
Beef fat: yum
Fish fat: yum
Roast Pork fat: yum

People do have a choice when buying groceries etc., but in restaurants, you don't always know what you're eating. Now people who are conscious about their diets have one less thing to be concerned with.
I think this is a step in the right direction.

50 years ago, people had to work a lot at manual labour jobs.
They had to bike or walk to the postal office to send a letter.
Now-a-days, you have fat asses that are too lazy to get up and go to the photocopy machine. Send an email "wanna go to mcdonalds?" to the person 3 cubicles over instead of walking to them and asking in person.
no exercise, work in office, .. fat lazy slobs.. . . dont eat in moderation.

Carbs are not bad for you.
LARGE PORTIONS OF SIMPLE CARBS are bad for you. And that's been a fact for years, U.S., Canada, anywhere.
Simple carbs give you energy, but when you're consuming more carbs than what your body uses to function daily, where do the carbs go? It turns into fat and stays in your body.
Consuming high trans fat foods and large portion sizes are equally deadly contribuations to obesity. (Have you ever ordered a pasta from a place in the U.S.?)
If carbs are all good for you, how come the Atkin's diet is one of the most popular all these years?
wow, this is incredibly stupid

Yes...carbs are really no different from any other except for added nutrients
their really is no difference between a slice of whole wheat bread and white bread in the carbs itself except for the added fiber and protein in the whole wheat bread
simple carbs have a different glycemic index than complex but u really need not to worry about that unless ur an serious athlete

cause atkins is for chicks trying to look anorexically skinny to please their men. most guys dont want to be skinny. most guys want to get bigger. carbs are bad if you are a couch potato but if you use them they are alllllll good.

Carrying a little extra fat is not bad for you. Being obese or cutting out meals to remain thin is. Lifestyle mags are not the places to get info on healthy living.
Simple carbs provide energy and little to no nutrition. This is not necessarily good for you, but it's not bad for you either. You still need to burn energy to stay alive and move around. I suggest you cut out fat and sugar before worrying about carbs.
Atkins is for stupid and lazy ppl. Which athletes go on Atkin's? That's right: the fat ones on the couch who don't want to get in shape properly.
