those cards are to relace your existing ID when it expires or if you lose it

they are not forcing you to "buy" a new one

and you shouldn't carry your citizenship card with you. Lose it and it will take you 9 months to get a new one. Trust me, i know.

there is an RFID scanner at the border that you hold your license up to, much like the nexus card. but it is only on the canada -> us side.

and the signal i would presume is very weak so have to be within a foot or so, or have a very sensitive receiver. and because they know some people are very paranoid about stuff like this, they gave us faraday sleeve for the card.

I got my license renewed and to be honest the card doesn't look as bad as everyone says. It actually looks pretty nice IN hand rather than viewing it online. It has a matte finish, hologram picture of yourself (the mini picture on the right of the card). Both your name and signature arent flush with the card, they stick out but not the way it does on a bank card.

I'm having trouble explaining it but in all honesty now that I have one in my hands, it feels way nicer and it doesn't look too bad.

i think they are changing due to how easy the one that we have "now" was modified for age. alot of people i konw have a fake and while it doesnt work as well on bouncers, going to bars, liquor store, and buying smokes is no problem! now it says under 19 under the main picture and the 1990 seems to be placed where it will be easier to tell if modified.. too bad design sucks, and no color on the picture T.T

You surrender your old license when you renew it. That's how it's been since before the enhanced licenses were offered.
