Swapping an older engine into a newer car + aircare

I will be getting a '97 ITR engine (with ECU) which I'll be putting in my '98 GS-R. My question is would the OBD scanner at aircare catch that it's an older engine and would I fail aircare? Thanks in advance.

so you're going to OBD1? As far as I know you can't go through aircare like that.

the ITR ecu is OBDII
P72: 94-95 OBD-1 Integra GSR
P72: 96-00 OBD-2 Integra GSR
P73: 96-00 OBD-2 Integra Type-R (JDM & USDM)

as long as you're converting everything, you should be fine. You should call some places like g5 to double check

I'm more worried about aircare catching that the engine is older than the car it's in. Like the test is for a '98 but when they plug in the scanner it says my car is a '97 or something.

FYI, it's illegal (according to the MVA) to put an older engine into a newer car. You can swap a newer engine into an older car, but not what you're suggesting.

Does that apply to any and every car?
I had the engine in My probe replaced, my probe was a '95, and I think they replaced it with a '94 iirc, as the '94 was the only engine with low km's they could find. Hmm...

I think aircare doesn't actually check what's in the hood unless you tell them. If you have something for them to scan then you should be good.

it's illegal... but how can they check, especially with a JDM motor and it's different ID stamps?

phone ahead, tell them u had a custom swap done and the car is running standalone that doesnt have odb2 port. see what they say, 99% of the time, they are cool with it. hide the obd2 port. they will let you run the rollers

If you are stayin' OBD2, then you'll be fine, as long as you use all the proper harnesses when doing the swap. It will scan fine, just make sure you have all the bugs worked out from the swap so your Check Engine Light isn't on (instant fail).
It's my aircare year, and I did a similar swap. My car is a 99, but I put in a 97. I went from a OBD2b to OBD2a, but since all the proper harnesses were used I should be home free (according to Garage 5).
There is no way for Aircare to really know you've swapped in an older engine. In all the times I've been hrough AirCare, they've only ever looked at my gas cap, and checked to make sure I have a cat installed.

I guess it's not heavily enforced, I couldn't even begin to think how many domestics are out there with motors using engine blocks from older cars.

If your car doesn't scan after the forth try (I think?) they default to the rollers.

I don't want to make a new thread so I'm bumping my old one since it's sort of related.
My car is running pretty rich right now and will need tuning, if get an OBD2->OBD1 conversion harness and a P28 ECU would that screw me over for aircare as well?

yup
scan tools can't detect obd1
once they hook up scan tool, its a automatic fail due to no communication
shouldn't be hard to put back your obd2 ecu, plug and plug

Well it's not a fail; rather, you get rejected. At least with that you get your money back. Trust me, I just dealt with this BS.
Just worry about getting your car aircared, which means you need that stock obd2 ecu in there. Once you get the pass, go nuts with the tuning :)
