decided i want a light tent. I was reminded of those closet shelves that hang from the clothes hanger and that they would work perfect for the tent, so went to have a look

after shopping at ikea, i ended up with this getup

total bill was a bit over $20 after tax

here are some shots

The Charlie Brown one is awesome.

The problem with the beer one is that it isn't open yet. :D

So let's have some details of this rig!

Looks great!
That Charlie Brown picture is awesome...I love it...

What exactly did you buy at Ikea? just that box you're using as a tent?

Please share...I've been looking into getting something like that to use as a light tent...

Ooooh someone has the LX3...

I think you need a little more light coming from the front, its all side lighting so far.

heres the list of materials i boguht yesterday

Skobb Drawer
2x Largra table lamp
25w bulbs

those tiny 25watt bulbs are not enuff, so i need to flush it with some bright flouresent lighting from the top to make it look good.

I need to head to staples to buy a white bristol board now for a white background so u dont see the actual box.

the only problem with the those lamps. it only uses these ikea bulbs, and i unno how good they are. They ave a white bulb which i will try today

if those are halogen/tungsten bulbs, i'd be concerned about keeping them that close to the material for extended periods of time =x

You fool. That's a LX2.:p

The results aren't too bad! Are you finding any strange colour casts?

Even cheaper light tent...

I actually made one, it's not bad for straight down shots.

here's the light tent that I bought off dx, comes with 3 other colored backgrounds.

Unfortunately I haven't gotten a flash for the D90 yet so these pic's are taken with only the one light shining through the side

^^ only crappy thing is you can see where the material bends...

Matsuda
03-10-2009, 08:51 PM
yeah if I had a flash, it would of just blown that out for me. Another thing i don't like is that things don't sit very well inside the tent. Its also not very stable cause the base isn't flat so its actually kinda rocked to one side.

hey i have the same light tent from DX

same bends too...wonder if it can be ironed out?

i haven't really had the time to play with it yet

Matsuda
03-12-2009, 10:56 PM
yeah people who got the light tent recommended ironing it out, I've just been lazy. I don't use it all that much

Tim Budong

in terms of strange colors..not so much
set a custom whitebalance b4 snapping anything fixed alot of weird lighting/color issues

if that made any sense...

Thanks for the set-up idea! I've tried to play around as well, but as you said, the 25W lights aren't strong enough. Did you use a flash to take the shots or just lit by 3 lights and a top light?

Here's one I did where I moved one of the side lights to the front (you can see the shadow) to light it up better. No top light was used. I think to have one would be better eh...

Great angle and wicked sharp, but a little under-exposed, I'm thinking... probably need to get a bit of light lower down.

and heres a one that i cropped to hell....

this time using a different approach..something similar to shooting a person in a studio!

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3436/3366949181_610c0fe6ff.jpg

we used a very strong white light thru a "diffuser" with the pelican flourescent as top lighting
then we used two "reflectors" to front light the product to eliminate any shadows from Haruhi's face

Senna4ever
03-19-2009, 01:54 AM
Actually, if that were a real person, you'd light her face more by about 1/2 stop.

This is my setup, I also had the balance and cloth issue, what I did was I grabbed 2 books and placed it inside the tent to balance it, then at the dollar store I got a large white cardboard, cut it down to size and slipped it in as the back and bottom, worked like a charm so far and if I spoiled the cardboard, I can just go get another one

You can use any lamp. Just make sure you use lamps that are the same colour temperature, so you can set the white balance later without having mixed lighting.

The first sample shots... I do need to find/make a better light box though. Please, don't laugh too hard!

The box!

The first shot... underexposed. Bigtime.
http://photos-h.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/hs012.snc1/2920_152917470602_639790602_6409039_172147_n.jpg

The second shot... I think the exposure worked out better... still underexposed but getting there! But... the focus is on the wrong stack.
http://photos-a.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc1/hs012.snc1/2920_152917475602_639790602_6409040_569870_n.jpg

Take 3... and final attempt before I get back to spring cleaning!

A little info on the setup...
2x Office Depot Clamp Desk Lamps
2x 6500K CFL Bulbs (60w equivalent)
Ikea El Cheapo White Box/Zip Bag of some sort
Black Satin as backdrop

I'm waiting for it to be dark so I can have the two lamps as the only source of light before I set a custom white balance. Main thing was getting the exposure set, as well as the focus. Had to make sure it would work before I could invest more time into it later tonight :D

darthchilli suggested I move the lamps lower, as well as reflect the light back in front. Good suggestions so far, and I will try them!
