sucks///most of your energy is spent passing/dodging other ppl...and your time will reflect that

but i'm still gonna go...

yah.. for sure.. sun run has way too many people... the turkey trot is a way better run... and the gear is much better too..

anyways.. i am aiming for 55 minutes .... not sure if i will be able to achieve this..The weather has been horrible and I haven't had much chances to hit the pavement !

Yeah, the Turkey Trot is a great run (limited to 1500) and the shirt is nice, but I find that it's getting pretty expensive ($60 for a 10K?)

I'm looking at doing the 8K race at the Vancouver Marathon in May just to get the thrill of being in a race again and to see where I'm at in terms of fitness. The cost is reasonable ($35), the course is flat, and there shouldn't be tens of thousands of runners/walkers to dodge.

What type of pace are you on right now? Take a look at the course - there are two inclines (one steep, and the other gradual) that you'll need to consider. Make sure you run hills during your training... and run them faster than you normally would on flat terrain to build up your strength and mental toughness to take the pain.

The hills are killer, especially the one going up Burarrd Bridge... make sure you push hard on those, you get rewarded with a small downhill shortly after

Does anyone know if you can just run the course without a timing chip and registration?

yeah you can just step in and run, it doesn't matter at all, run with a friend then you can know your time..or just take note of the start/finish clocks and do some math

did 55:55, not bad for no training. I spent a lot of time dodging people for the first few Ks, Started opening up after the Burrard bridge. Next year i would definitely go to the yellow section.

I started at the beginning of the Green section and had to avoid walkers and slow runners right to the very end. I was extremely disappointed in how many slow people were wearing yellow bibs. I would've easily been 2-3 mins faster if I wasn't stuck behind people or expending energy to get around them.

and Team Pakistan, YOU SUCK! I saw at least 10 team members WALKING! How the hell did you get yellow bibs, and why the hell are you even on course if you're already walking? Arg.

and to the idiots with the strollers in the green section, get to the back of the bus! You're not supposed to be there.

You need proper shoes, not insoles.

Have you ever done a foot test to determine if you pronate?
Do you replace your shoes when they are worn?
Do you know how to identify worn shoes?

No foot test
Recently replaced my shoes, I was saying i need new insoles due to the cuts
I went to running room before purchasing my shoes and the person wasn't helpful as she was reading a book and didnt want to answer my questions.

I do have pains walking today. The outside of my left foot hurts whenever theres pressure on it. Would that be an indication of a pronate foot?

Prior to the race this wasn't a concern but it could be due to my running only 6 km at most

can't you tell if you over pronate or not based on an old pair of shoes and how the back of the rubber sole wears out... i am relatively neutral with a very slight overpronate !

I've posted this on other sites:

You need to determine more about your feet AND determine when your shoes are worn out.

Foot type: http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,7120,s6-240-319-326-7152-0,00.html

One you know your foot type, you need to determine its width, then buy appropriate shoes. I like Asics cause you can get them in different foot types and widths, go on the Asic website and determine which type of shoe best matches your foot. When you are ready to buy, hit http://www.eastbay.com cause they'll be 1/2 the price, especially deals on last year's models.

Worn out:
- Drop your shoe, if it doesn't bounce, its dead
- If your feet start to hurt, your shoes are probably worn out. New shoes feel like running on a cushion of air.
- If you cannot remember when you bought your shoes last, they are probably worn out.
- If you're running/playing sports 2-3x/week, you need to replace your shoes every year, or less. I went through 2 pairs of shoes in 4 months cause I was running 5 days a week and have a heavy foot.

Do NOT get your feet assessed by running room! They will trick you into buying their over-priced shoes.

the best way is to video tape yourself running on a treadmill. get the camera in nice and close on your ankles from behind.
