Do you guys find that the crabs are getting smaller this year?
They used to be 12 lbs or more a couple years ago, but this year it looks like 9-10 lbs is quite the norm!
Makes me think about the sustainability ... I do want to keep enjoying King Crabs for a few more decades...

Was watching the F word the other night and Ramsey was diving for them in Norway ...i think. maybe finland? Anyway they have a epidemic of kingcrab iover there and they are seen as a nuisance. Hopefully they will somehow capitalize on that and start catching them out of that area. more crab=cheaper crab

Alaskan King Crab fishing is one of the most dangerous jobs in the world. I highly doubt they'll come down in price, if any, they would only go up.

no, all the ones I've been getting are 13-14lbs this year :D
just had another round of king crab at jade garden...
14lbs for 5 ppl
steam the legs with garlic/green onions
then the middle part stir fried with top layer soy sauce, first time had it done this way and surprisingly tasted much better then spicy deep fried, the meat was very flavored with the soy sauce
then the usual baked rice.
tip for eating king crab at restaurant, always go to the ones that prices are most expensive per lbs. those $12 and under per lbs places will never give out the right amount. they usually charge you 13lbs for a 8lbs crab
Grandmaster TSE
03-12-2009, 12:01 PM
they are getting cheaper
in restaurant is good, but i like to cook it myself, and its very simple
buy the crab, cleaver it up
mix diced garlic with a bit of oil and salt and spread that on the crab meat and just steam it
its a nice flavor with the garlic and you get the natural sweet taste of the crab

I heard the same thing haha. They pretty much scavenge whatever is on the sea floor and consume everything in its path. The reason why the price doesn't move is because there's a limit on how many can be caught per year and since its one of their primary sources of income they won't increase the limit, apparently.

i'd usually have it few times a year when it's near the $10/lb range

Statistically, Alaskan crab fishing remains one of the most dangerous jobs in the United States. [4] In 2006, the Bureau of Labor Statistics ranked commercial fishing as the job occupation with the highest fatality rate with 141.7 per 100,000, almost 75 percent higher than the rate of for pilots, flight engineers and loggers, the next most hazardous occupations. [8] However, Alaskan crab fishing specifically is even more dangerous with over 300 fatalities per 100,000.[9][10] Over 80% of these deaths are caused by drowning or hypothermia.[11] The fishermen are also susceptible to crippling injuries caused by working with heavy machinery and gear.

Yup, they have this deal at Bing Sheng on Renfrew too. Some of the cast from out of town from the film I'm working on have been craving Chinese style king crab, so Monday we hit Sun Shi Wah and last night we hit Bing Sheng.
Surprisingly, despite their lack of hard alcohol, everyone actually enjoyed Bing Sheng more. For the 7 of us we ordered 3 king crabs, two 10 pounders and a 13 pounder, 1st course was steamed with garlic and served with butter, 2nd course was fried in spice/peppers/jalapeno and 3rd course was rice in a coconut curry sauce served in the shells of the king crabs.

but the problem that i suspect a chinese restaurant would pull is
they take out the grab and show it to u, claiming its 13 pounds..how would you know they didnt bs u and its actually 10 pounds? ok even if it is 12 pounds, by the time they go back to the kitche they might give u a 9 pounder and cook that shit and serve it to u.
So in the end, that 13 pounder my just be a display, that keeps on getting taken out to show to each customer. the display crab i call it..

There is a restaurant on Kingsway just past slocan if you're going east. So driving east on Kingsway, you'll pass Churchs on the right, then you'll pass Slocan St and then halfway into the block, it is the restaurant.
There is the word dragon in it but I can't remember the english name.

i had king crab for my birthday couple weeks ago
about 12 ppl
had 2 ~11lb crabs at kingford seafood resturant
they brought out 2 crabs (weighed both in front of me)
the portion seemed about right, and didnt seem like they jewed me
3 big plates of garlic steamed
2 plates of the deep fried kunckles
and 2 bowls of fried rice.
$9.88 per lb
i got a bunch of other stuff as well (ie. 2 peking ducks, a bunch of veigies, seafood platter etc) bill came to about $750 including tax and tip which wasnt bad at all for 12 people
and a for chinese new year, we went to "northern dynasty" for king crab, had 1 14lb crab, for 7 people, they made with steam with garlic, and steamed with this chinese rice wine, and fried rice
i think Northern dynasty serves the king crab slightly better. but i wasnt sure on the cost at the time, right now they advertise it for 10.99 per lb
Kingford is at the corner of no.3 and westminister hwy
Northern DYnasty is across from ESTEA in rmd

Personally i can't tell the taste diff between king crab and normal crab. I'd rather just have more of the normal crab.

I think the way they cook king crab vs normal crab plays a big difference. I have yet to see normal dungeness crab split open and steamed with garlic, or king crab done in butter cream sauce. :D
