Official Netbook thread
discuss all about netbooks!
Ill start it off,
This seems like a stupid question but, how do you guys charge your netbooks? Do you people charge it when it's on and only charge when its 100% drained?

i always have the power plug in no matter where I go. if I can't find one, then i would just use the battery.
even at 100% charged, it'll still be pluuged in.

^ ditto
Wouldn't that shorten the battery memory?
I dont like plugging in the ac adapter, when im on the run. Should of gotten the 6cell for my aspire one =(
v1nce
03-14-2009, 05:13 PM
i don't know if it'll shorten the battery life but that would be pretty stupid if it does cause even without the battery plugged in.. you could just run the power plug and it would work.
i've got the 6 cell aspire one. I want the 9 cell battery though.
where'd you get the 6 cell??
i might just go cop one on ebay. Worth it?? apparently they dont sell the 6cells 8.9'' at futureshop and staples i believe?
v1nce
03-14-2009, 05:55 PM
oh, when i bought the aa1, it came with the 6 cell battery.
you should get the 9 cell, i think its not much bigger then the 6 cell.

i bought my netbook for ultra-portability..so i almost never bring my cord with me.
It stays home and charges when my 6cell is completely drained...
i heard the battery loses life when it's 100% charged and plugged in for a long period of time(turned on of course).

that's what i heard also.
However what's the reverse situation? Drained out battery and charging it while using it at the same time... will it be as bad?
And yeah 9cell is 7-8hrs i believe? i might consider, but its $100 not sure if i wanna dump extra money on a battery.
Also im starting to doubt the 8.9'' thinking of selling this to get a 10'' with 6 cell. sigh..

Ditto. The battery is my UPS. :D
I don't really care about the battery that much, probably will get another battery for it.
HP Mini 1035NR
Im a broke all the time, soo thats why i went with acer.
HP is pretty expensive, the asus 1000he looks really nice, but meh dont wanna spend that kind of money on a "netbook" rather spend a little more for a real laptop then.

You should always leave your laptop plugged in when not in use, whether it's for a day or a year.

overcharging can damage the battery. for optimal life of your battery, it's best to keep your charge at 70%. It's actually what the toyota prius does.

all rechargable batteries will lose their maximum charge after awhile... thats how manufactures make money

I got the 1000HE when it was $449. I thought it was a pretty good deal. 7-8 hour battery life, light as hell, I bring it to school all the time now. I pretty much don't even use my Sony laptop anymore and have my netbook as my main computer lol.

You're not serious right?
so anyone upgraded their ram on theirr netbooks yet?

i wanted to upgrade it to 1.5 since thats the max. I have 1 g on it. the store that i bought it from told me it'll be no difference upgrading it from 1g to 1.5g. i believed him cause he didn't want to sell me a product i didn't need.

when are they going to release the dual core atom nettop???

that makes me want to get rid of my current book right now and wait for the newers to come out =P..
however i dont think ill be ever getting a real laptop, might as well just keep upgrading netbooks every 6months.

OK, I was being facetious. Just to make it clear for people taking it literally: If you are storing your laptop for a year, then you will want to bring the charge down a bit (40%) and store the battery in a refrigerator.
But for day-to-day use, you do NOT want to discharge your battery over and over if you don't have to. The fastest way to lower the lifespan of a battery is to put it through charge cycles. If you can prevent having to charge the battery, it will last much, much longer. If you are constantly draining it for no reason, you are wasting your battery away.

Yea, but you can't compare the batteries. All hybrids have Ni-MH, while laptops and electronics use Li-ions. Entirely different battery characteristics.

I wasn't even going to respond to the Toyota Prius comment. He obviously has no clue what he's talking about (so it would make no sense at all to attempt to argue against my point)
So all in one sentence, dont pop in the battery pack when you dont need to?

im always draining it 100% at school..charge overnight, then repeat.
:(
Don't take out unlesss storing, hm so when im at home using it, connecting it to the ac wouldnt affect the battery? Even when it's 100% it's connected?
To put it in a real life situation, Wake up(full charge) unplug ac, go to washroom in the morning take a shit for 20mins (say you used 10%), and then charge it back up 10%, and hten go to school, drain it until it's dead.

Life of student. Nothing that can be done. :(
There are regulating electronics inside the laptop that will prevent battery overcharge when you have it all the time... Li-Ion's don't really have a "memory" effect per se, either.

yeah i've only owned my eeepc1000 for ~ 7 months and the battery is already down to ~5:15 instead of 6-6:15hours on my 6cell.
This is with pretty low contrast, wifi on, SHE battery saving mode.
With wifi off i think i can still pull off a 7 hour though :p

i got the eee1000 and dell mini 12 and now a lenovo s10 (between me and my gf) all of them are plugged in all the time. I dont see the point of conserving the life of a netbook isnt really worth it imo. they are pretty cheap if they die/dont work or battery life is less then an hr and a half its time for a new one
^
good point, so why you have so many netbooks anyway?
Another question, are you people using your books as your main computer right now?
Right now i have a dilemma of selling my book and spending a little more money to buy a 12" so it'll last me on a long term basis. I originally bought the netbook so i could use it temporarily as my main computer for the next few months and wait untiil the fall semester and buy a new laptop.

netbooks are straight up pimp cause they're so portable.
hopefully i'll buy one soon but I'm fine with my full sized lappy.

I wish i bought a full size laptop.
Sure, a netbook is cool for a while, but I really miss having a bigger screen and keyboard.
Recently installed NHL09 on my AA1 & it works pretty good lol.
^
You are right man, it gets tiring using the netbook. I kinda regret not getting 10inch now.. its not much of a difference but meh, dota on the 8.9 incher feels soo weird.
Where'd you cop the nhl 09 btw?
Anyhow i dont know why the headphones(works for ipod) wont work when i plug it in, worked earlier.

Got a Dell Mini9; like it so far.
My main desktop (6 years old) exploded awhile ago, so I'm using this as my main computer until I piece together my new quad core machine.
From a 2.4GHz Celeron to a 3GHZ quad core will be quite a nice change.

you are super helpful. Lol thanks + rep.
Now i have a dilemma, to cop a bigger screen laptop with 6cell or just stick with the acer that has a 3cell.. Kinda disappointed at the 3cell how it only holds 2ish hours, but the 1000he has 8hrs. Not fair.

Currently using the aa1, pretty sure its the same one v1nce is using. I'm alternating between that and an ibook g4 for school use. I like using the netbook because I don't need to bring my bigger messenger bag, but at the same time it is more tiring typing with a smaller keyboard, especially with my fat fingers. Biggest problem with my ibook is the designated 32mb graphics card, which is slow even for youtube use. Both have similar battery life (and to think my ibook is a good 5-6 years old).
Can't afford a real laptop, so had to settle with something cheap.

SP, arguement is nessesary process of progress.
OK what I said is to be applied to storing a battery...
But I did find this...
The charge cannot be terminated on a voltage. The capacity reached at 4.2 Volts per cell is only 40 to 70% of full capacity. For this reason you need to continue to charge until the current drops, and to terminate on the low current.
It is important to note that trickle charging is not acceptable for lithium batteries. The Li-ion chemistry cannot accept an overcharge without causing damage to the cell, possibly plating out lithium metal and becoming hazardous.

i guess overcharging doesn't apply to laptops these days since they have safety measures in place.
so, go ahead an charge away! often and early.
Just wondering how much are you guys buying the asus EEEPC 100HE for?
Is it worth selling the aspire one(8.9'' 160gb HD, 3cell) that i have and spending about 100-150 more on the 1000HE(10'', 160gb, 6cell)?

lulz wtf...it's a netbook!
it's like trying to fit TT v8 in a honda fit.
it's gonna be interesting to see asus put out another Eee that's gonna last ~9 hours of battery life. SHE's impressive..now if they can get those #'s for 10.2" w/ dual-core atom's..that'd be great. Hope it's lighter than it's 1000/h/ha counterpart though..IMO anything over 1kg is too heavy as a netbook.

Dual core atoms are a ways away. I think at least q3/q4. Mind you the battery life will probably not be as good. Upgrades are cheap now so why not? RAM and HDD are pretty cheap so they're a logical upgrade anyways.

keep the SSD
freefall sensor...so from my understanding it parks the spinning disk to a stop right before it impacts the ground?
Doesnt that happen in less than a minute..how does that work when the drive is spinning 5400-7200 RPM?;)
It won't charge past 100%. It will just keep the battery charged at that point. That's why it's important to keep it plugged in, it prevents the battery from being discharged then have to be charged again, shortening its lifespan.
That is BAD.
You should only ever unplug the laptop when you are taking it on the road, or storing it for weeks.
Can you please explain to me the logic behind this i do not quite understand
if you keep a cellphone plugged in all the time, the battery does not hold near it full charge after several months. The same goes with laptops, and I have experienced this on many occassions which is why i tell ppl that use their laptops for prolonged periods of time to unplug their battery. I do not know about you, but these batteries cost a fortune. This is my way of babying my batteries.
by charging continuously the cells that are being discharged, is that not shortening its lifespan by many folds

Price for value. You're only getting a 60GB HDD and 2 USB ports when others for the same price offer a 160-gigger and 3 USB ports AND VGA out AND separate mic/headphone jacks (the Mini has a single headset jack, think iPhone).
I went for it anyway due to the design (it's way better-looking than the competion, IMHO), the slimness, the huge keyboard and the awesome speakers. I love mine lol; it's the overall experience that counted for me.

Yeah I was thinking of the SSD however I'm thinking of installing OS X as well. The free fall parks the drive heads in milliseconds. The platters still spin but since the heads are parked the won't get damaged.

Asus is confusing me.. could anyone highlight the main differences between the following EEE PC models for me?
1000H
1000HE
1000HA
1005HA
They all seem to be pretty much the same minus some optional battery sizes. From what I've read in the other thread, I should just pick up a 1000HE or 1005HA?
(This is for the gf, no games, just school)
isn't the 1005 the seashell? it'd b slimmer and better battery life? (i.e. 7hours vs. 9hours RATED)
the most important thing is battery life in these things, then screen size, wireless N if you need it, bluetooth etc.
There's a thread in RFD about the seashell 1005 for like $360, but it doens't have bluetooth, no wireless N etc. with those options it'd b $4xx and just over $5xx with tax i think...
there's also the one i have for sale heh

From the list you should really only consider 1000HE and 1005HA. They have the much improved keyboard and battery life and CPU. N280 vs N270.

I doubt CS:S will run without looking like shit. Not worth the money.

I bought a Samsung N120 at Best Buy (price matched FS) at the beginning of this month for like $317+tax and it's pretty good. The battery last for like 8-10hrs and the keyboard is big and nice to type on.

Ill look into the 1033 and the asus 1005
After looking around those are my final choices basically.. Till I see them and see the feel of the keyboard :P
Any more recommendations?
I use an HP Mini 1035NR and bought an eBay (*GASP*) 6-cell battery. Even then, battery life is not nearly as good as some of the other netbooks (notably the MSI Wind hybrid thing and the newer Eee PCs), but even with the battery bulge, the HP still looks damn good and the keyboard is to die for. :p Mind you, I did max out the RAM and replaced the 60GB POS hard drive with a 128GB SSD, so it does run longer and better than stock. :p

i went to NCIX to see if they had a demo 1005HA for me to check out, but instead i picked up a Dell Mini 10V, for $350, guy gave me like $20 off?
120gb and 6 cell battery, $40 less than the 1005HA, 40gb less HDD space but i cant be more happier
always heard good things about Dell's warranty, and the look of the netbook beats the asus imo :D

Mini 10V isn't bad. But battery life on the 1005HA is better.

Nice. Finally get a working SSD? I can't stand that weird 6cel. battery in the first gen mini 1000's. I'm on my 3rd netbook now. Well technically not netbook.
Acer AS1410 Core2Solo Su3500, 11.6" 1366x768, 3gb ram, GMA 4500MHD. Added 128GB SSD and 8hr battery. Bestbuy selling for $479 after $20 off coupon.

I'm happy with the HP mini 110 w/6 cell that I bought at Costco. The battery will last me all day at work doing spreadsheets and some photo editing. I have the screen at the default battery power setting and at the end of the day I typically have 10% left on the battery.

Just got this one for $360+tax from Staples stacking coupons ($50+20+20). :)
nice upgrade from 1000HE except losing bluetooth and little battery life.

$360?! wow.. Stop copying me lol.. I fixed the battery issue by ordering the 5600mah battery. Also ordered the BT module so it's very comparible now to my old 1000he.

Staples has this netbook $449 regular price at the moment. so if you have some coupons, you can actually save a bit more.
i don't know how long the price will be like this, it's been fluctuating a lot for the past few weeks that it's been out

I got the 5600mah here: http://www.laptop-batteries.com.au/computer-battery/acer-um09e36.htm
The one I received was an OEM Acer battery.
I also just ordered the US keyboard because I hate hate our bilingual keyboard.
$24cdn off ebay. Same as an aspire 751 keyboard.
very good find.
now u made me want to buy the battery. :p
I have 64gb ssd in there with xp and it runs a lot faster than any atom I ever had. :)

how long did it take you to receive the battery?
does the battery stick out?
does it really last a lot longer than original 6 cell?
very tempting.... It's only $99US...

Hmm it was about 1.5 weeks or so? I shipped wth EMS. The battery is physically exactly the same size but weighs a tiny bit more and lasts a lot longer. 5.5hour 4400mah vs 7.5hour 5600mah. I've got mine loaded with 128gb SSD and Win7 X64 RTM.

bump for the nubs.
but seriously the only netbook worth a damn is the HP Mini 311 w/ nvidia ion (9400m) or the Lenovo S12 model with ion.
http://www.laptopmag.com/review/laptop/hp-mini-311.aspx?page=2
with nvidia ion and dxva 1080p is possible (and soon gpu accelerated flash HD with flash 10.1) and games like torchlight or HoN/LoL are playable.

I don't agree.. That may be true for gaming, but for school, the asus 1005ha is hard to beat at 10.5 hours battery life. My gf uses it for school, and she charges it once a week..

the ion is more for media in general...the hp has like 5.5 hours of battery? for normal browsing/word if she goes through ~10 hours of battery a week i think she can charge every few nights. besides i'm sure a 9cell will be sold for it eventually.

so with ultraportable laptops similar in size to netbooks, but with better performance, what advantages are there in getting a netbook? price?

Mini311 is ok. The CPU still sux and the battery life isn't great. My Acer with gma4500 is able to play 1080p if I need it to so really the 9400 only benefits for gaming and possibly encoding.
Price and battery life.
not necessary.
I got my AS1410 at $360. That's the same price as Aspire One 10 or 11" for same battery life (5.5 hours) at about the same price. :p
Total newb here in terms of getting a netbook.
But I'm looking to get one for my dad for his bday present.
I need something that is light, good battery life and the $300-$350 range. It doesn't really need all the bells and whistles but something that last 2-3 years without it breaking down or having to repair it would be good.
Any suggestions out there?
Also do these netbooks come preloaded with the newest windows - if it doesn't how do you go about installing it the netbooks don't have disk drives.
^ for dad, u probably want 10"~11" at least.
Windows 7 usually goes to netbook like Acer A1410(timeline). when it goes on sale, it's about $400. I got mine at $350 when staples put on sale with stacking of coupons.
to install new windows, u need external usb cd/dvd drive or a flash drive made with bootable iso. i found usb drive much easier than creating a bootable iso, so never bother.

Thanks ECSW for the quick reply.
I did a little bit of research and thinking bout getting the Asus 1005 HA netbook.
I know there are a few versions out there - looks like BB/FS currently has the 6 cell battery with 8.5hrs of life at $329 - not too shabby.
Has anyone used this netbook and how does it compare to others?
^ u r welcome. :) 1005ha is a good choice. i think some 1005HA come with Windows 7 started edition.

Has anyone installed Windows 7 on their netbook, if so did you find the battery life better or worst then XP? I want to install Windows 7 but don't want to give up my 8-10hr battery life.
I have Windows 7 for my Acer A1410 (well, technically a notebook). It's not any shorter battery life than in XP.
Vista is quite a battery eater, but windows7 is much better imo.

Same battery life is pretty close. My AS1410 supposedly can get 8 hours. I average around 7.5 hours

USB optical drive.
Or. Grab HP USB formatter and format a USB stick and dump the ISO contents onto it. Boots just fine
yap, a cheap DVD rom with IDE to USB converter does the job. :)

hey guys, i'd appreciate some suggestions as to which netbook or notebook to get for the gf this Christmas. something portable for school, something cute would be nice. price around 400-500 should be okay, but wouldn't mind looking at everything.
do ppl get tired at staring at 10-11" screens in class? seems kind of small but i have no personal experience. 13" would be ideal but I dont think netbooks come in that size..?
and would also prefer to stay away from HP..

haven't been in the netbook hype for a year now..but
10-11 is perfect size for ultraportability w/o straining your eyes IMO
my vote goes for the Eee..maybe the 1005 (but I'm biased tho) for relability and insanely long battery life..i'm sure other company offers better specs at cheaper prices but i could be wrong.
anything with 1366x768. ;)
!MiKrofT, I got a RMA replacement OCZ Vertex 60 GB SSD (they ran out of Core V2) after the fail of flashing firmware. It's FAST with new controller and 64MB buffer. I am getting 180mb/s+ on sequential read and 120+mb/s on write.
Thanks again for the deal. ;)

Got the 1101HA couple weeks back.
Installed W7 Pro and it seems to perform well.
Surpringly 720p is not supposed to run on this HD screen, but WMP12 plays it perfect.
I do not plan to watch HD videos. However, it's nice to know it performs above my expectations.
Just picked up a Dell mini10v and the mic's not working. I tried googling a solution, but it seems like all searches yield to the same question with no solution.
Thoughts anyone?
Much appreciated.
