32bit XP to 64bit Vista

how would i go about this process??
Some forums say,clean install, some say you can overwrite by buying from Microsoft?
Someone got answers?

xp 32 > vista 32 can be done with upgrade
xp 32 > vista 64 requires clean install

Stick with XP. I have both Vista 32 and 64 ultimate that I didnt even bother upgrading to (legit versions too). Waiting for Windows 7 to switch over.

Yeah, I've went back to XP as well. I have Vista on my laptop only and I hate it. I've been testing the public Windows 7 beta and it's actually quite fast.
Windows 7 is no faster than Vista on a modern desktop ...
Laptop, it's certainly quicker, mainly because it doesn't access the hard drive as much, which is a major weak point of laptops. Of course, modifying the background programs and services can work wonders for Vista, too.

Helpfully responding to the question and obviously contributing to the thread. Did you even read it what was asked?
To answer, like everyone else, clean install would have to be the way to go. Just remember to grab the service packs and security patches.

windows 7 on my laptop seems slower than vista and when it loads my hard drive goes crazy . i can hear it spin and it reading info
