there are many factors in scheduling....i have ran leagues b4 and its tough..but on the other side of it as a team manager it is very very frustrating.
ASHL is damn good...the whole entire summer schedule was released about 3 weeks ago already!

Actually it was us (roflcatzz) that dropped Linden and Sophorn...not by choice, but they couldn't play this year.

First off there's no hongers on the team

Secondly, any problems your team has with the officiating, your team Captain should email Steve Tajiri (Head Referee) and voice your complains.

Thirdly, your player got kicked out because after your team drew the PP, he should've skated to the bench. But instead he decides to turn around and put his shoulder into my teammate, gets knocked down, gets all mad cause he just got embarrassed, then once again, instead of skating back to the bench like he should've, decides to skate to the penalty box and proceeds to shove my teammate into the penalty box when he opened the door. That is "intent to injure" which means automatic match penalty which equates to a game ejection and minimum 3 game suspension. Lets not mention the fact he didn't head to the dressing room to get changed, but instead waited till the end of the game then proceeded to utter threats. You wanna talk about sportsmanship?

What makes hockey so great is the fact you put everything on the ice/rink, then at the end of the game you show respect. You shake hands, you leave it at that, and then joke about the game. You don't utter threats outside the game and you sure as hell don't try to injure someone during the game. You talk about my team having no sportsmanship, at the end of the game, your team didn't even wanted to shake hands. In fact I counted 5 players including your goalie that didn't line up. I was the first player to skate to center ice to shake hands. I also skated to your bench and shook your goalies hand. Not to mention I made everyone on my team line up. So please, don't slander and say my team has no sportsmanship.

You can blame Bryan for this. We registered in a higher tier, whatever the one under Brass is called. He decided to re-tier us to the lowest tier. His reason was "You guys beat KillerBunnies by 1 goal. Your team shouldn't be any higher". He even laughed at it. That game, we had 2 friends on the KillerBunnies (good players) and they decideded to try to stick it to us, we played along and beat them by that 1 goal. Believe me, we've been trying to tell Byran to bump us up. We finally convinced 1 of the ref's from last nights game to email the league to bump us up.

As for us playing below our level, from the first yr, 3 years ago, we had 3-4 girls playing on the team, and lots of noobs. This year, we only have 1, who I think is more of a sub and the noob players aren't so noob anymore. We can finally play higher. Then we get denied from Bryan. The only reason we moved from PICH to begin with, was cause they redid the import rule (like they do every year) and the team couldn't play anything under tier 12 (I think). Didn't help matters since 3 of the guys played in tier 5.

So it was either the team breaks up or move to VIHL. Then I joined their Tier 5 team (which is now Tier6) this summer, but we had too many imports, so we had no choice but stay at VIHL and registered in that higher tier. Then Bryan.....well, you already know that story. Trust me, we don't want to be in this tier anymore than you guys want us. lol. Looking at the stats, I think PICH Refugees should be bumped up too. Our last 2 games should change Bryans views.

Yeah, we're trying to teach the noobs about hockey etiquette. They can somewhat play but have zero idea about respect. I can't control what anybody on my team does or says. So, I do apologize for that, however, I hope you guys didn't think we were taunting from our own bench, cause we taunt ourselves all the time. lol. Seriously, we'll make fun of each other as we play, hell, our game on Sun night, I scored a slapshot from near center face off circle, instead of celebrating, I skated over to my bench and pointed my finger at #4. :haha That's pretty much what we do to each other. The guys that were trying all hard were the noobs and yeah, we're trying to correct that.

But you should let your guy know (the ejected one) to not let his emotions get in front of team success. Instead of you guys enjoying a PP, not only did he take you guys off it, you also had to go on PK, not to mention have 1 man short cause he got kicked out. Now he's serving his suspension as well. In our game, yeah, I can see it didn't make a difference anymore, but in those closer games, you don't want your own player to put your team in a rut like that. Just remind him that, at the end of the game, the stats and standings show a W or L and not when he dropped some guy cause he was all pissed off. Not to mention, when battling for puck possession on the boards, things do accidentally happen.

First off, I talked to Bryan tonight. There seemed to have been a mix up about the tiering of my team. He apparently didn't receive any notifications about my team wanting to get bumped up. He only had just heard about us wanting to go up a Div like a couple days ago. Some miscommunication between the team and league.

Good game tonight vs Refugees. They def don't belong in this tier. I couldn't see 1 player that had trouble skating or handling the puck. Although we lost 6-3 tonight, I felt both teams were pretty equal. Too bad our goalie had a bad game, I may have jinxed him by telling him not to pull a Luongo. Lol. I also found out tonight it's his first time playing roller goalie. That #19 on their team, he's got one hell of a slapshot. We underestimated how many decent players they had. We figured they were like us, 4-5 decent guys and the rest noobs. We were pretty wrong..lol.

Yeah, I have to admit, PICH has better rink times, and honestly, that's the only thing going for them. If you think VIHL is poorly run, your gonna want to burn RIC down, cause they are down right horrible. The Schedule still isn't up. Lots of people think PICH is just a money grab. Ref's don't give a shit and the league managers don't run shit. I've played in the big 3 Roller Hockey Leagues. VIHL, PICH, West Coast (Langley). VIHL is the best run, out of the 3. PICH is the worst. PICH refs call a "delay of game" penalty on players who try to freeze the puck along the boards. Now that is stupid.

Bryan works his ass off for VIHL and he employs quite a few people to help move things along. But he can't focus on the league itself 24/7. He's got a day job like most of us do. I enjoy playing in VIHL, just wish I could play higher, then I can be that plumber all over again. :haha:

I'm not too sure about our Gold tiers (VIHL), but some of the lower tier teams in the WCL have some damned good players. 6thGear is right though, VIHL is run pretty damned smoothly. They bust ass to get stats up and all that good stuff, they're still relatively new compared to PICH, but so far they're building a good reputation for themselves.

Like 6th gear said, the only thing going for pich is the rink times. I went back to pich this year because my vihl games didnt start until 1030 and with work the next morning, it gets pretty tiring. I could care less about beer league stats so as long as i get to play i'm happy :p

If you think VIHL is poorly run, your gonna want to burn RIC down, cause they are down right horrible. The Schedule still isn't up. Lots of people think PICH is just a money grab. Ref's don't give a shit and the league managers don't run shit. I've played in the big 3 Roller Hockey Leagues. VIHL, PICH, West Coast (Langley). VIHL is the best run, out of the 3. PICH is the worst. PICH refs call a "delay of game" penalty on players who try to freeze the puck along the boards. Now that is stupid.

I couldn't agree more with what you have to say about PICH. I've played in the league almost from the start and this year, 3 of our games had only 1 ref (2 of those games the only ref that showed up was late). 1 game had no timekeeper and no scoresheet.

On top of that, until recently, there was no stats, and the scheduling is a joke. People can't make plans because they don't even know when the games are going to be scheduled.

The biggest ref issue I have ever run into was racist refs at Langley. During 1 game, I beat a guy 1 on 1 and was on a breakaway from his blueline in. The other player football tackles me!! I was thinking "sweet, penalty or penalty shot" I look over at the ref at the half boards. He has his hands behind his back. I look at the other ref down at the other end. No raised hand. I look back at the ref with this "WTF" expression. I ask " What no call?" He looks at me, has the pretend " I didn't see anything" look then skates away.

So I bust my ass back to my own end, slide and block a cross ice passing attempt. Well the puck was stuck under me as I slid onto our goal crease. Whistle blows and that same ref who "didn't see anything" motions a penalty shot?? I go up to him for an explanation and he totally ignores me. Now, I've reffed before and the worst thing to piss off a ref is to start screaming at him. So, i knew better and asked both of them politely. So I went to the other ref and he hands me a fucking bench minor? So not only did we get screwed with that penalty shot, we had to do a PK.

Then at the end of the game, both sides get into a bruhaha and they start calling us "fucking chinks". Then their families...yes, families as in sisters, moms and gf's start bitching at us saying we were rough out there and shit. They got all pissed cause they were an all white team with huge guys that got beaten by a team of asians that were of average asian size.

Anyway, back to PICH. They also hand out fines for stupid things, like having no goalie and players with too many different jerseys. So yeah, there's a reason why lots of people think they are a money grab league

But as a reliever I joined a team in PICH this year.

mouthguards aren't meant to protect your teeth, they are there so when there is impact to your head your teeth don't bang together preventing more damage from a concussion

actually it is now proven that is not the case but either way you should wear one. Almost ALL hockey insurance do not cover dental if you hit your teeth and not wearing a mouthguard.

Best ones are the custom fitted ones but if you dont want to pay $100+ there are some standard fitting ones out there. Its hella uncomfortable at first but its well worth it

cops were even called after as our buddies from the previous game were watching and threatening chuck norris. dont mess with east vancouver lol.

Yeah hands down this team is the most fucked up team that's been in the VIHL over the past couple seasons. Well, some people feed their ego by schooling lesser skilled players. I agree with you, either that or just play setup man. A couple yrs back there was this Jr B guy who was tearing up the lowest level. I called him out and told him to pass more during games on the vihl forums. I told him I could score 3 goals a game on noobs if I hogged the puck all game too. Well, my buddy thought it would be funny to bug me on the forum (don't think people knew we were friends) and next thing I know I get flamed and ripped to shits for calling out this Jr B guy. Then some guy took the time to find my stats and then say that for a Bronze level player I should have more than 1 PPG in that tier.( I think it was Iron? I don't remember)

This Jr B guy then goes on taunting the Gold/Platinum players who told him to play at his own skill level. I played nice and didn't reveal him being a Jr B player but looking back, I should've.

I was one of the referees in this game. The game was fairly clean up to the point of the brawl when all hell broke loose. I did my very best to make sure that the several Chuck Norris players involved are banned for life from the VIHL. There is no room in rec hockey for this kind of gang beating. I've been a ref in this league for 4 years, and primarily work out of KM doing the upper tiers of Platinum, Gold, and Silver, and have never seen the kind of cowardice shown by Chuck Norris during this game. Pretty fucked that they would all clear the bench to go looking for fights. I still think the most screwed up team was the team that decided to storm the other teams locker room after the game. That was YR 1 of VIHL.


Something about "white guys not liking Asians being better at hockey than them" sure pisses them off. I had quite a few run ins at $$$$$$$$$ where they were calling us chinks. Then there's the refs...don't get me started on those racist officials.

Near the end of a tied game, I had knocked their defenceman over and stolen the puck from him and sent our player on a breakaway for the game winning goal (think it was in overtime). My action of knocking the player over wasn't a penalty in my opinion, and in the referee's opinion, but the Young Guns took exception and attacked me from behind during our goal celebration. This was when things got out of hand, a brawl started but was eventually broken up. When I went to the dressingroom, the girlfriends of the Young Guns were standing outside of our dressingroom giving me an earful so I gave them an earful and continued into the dressing room. This is when the Young Guns came in and tried to start an off ice brawl, but luckily cops came, and nothing else happened. There was no racial talk at all during this confrontation so your comment of "white guys not liking Asians being better at hockey than them" is completely wrong. I was one of only two caucasian players on my team; a team full of asians!

Now I play in Silver 1 which has significantly less BS than the lower tiers. The way the refs are assigned to games is based on experience. The more experience you have, the higher tiered games you're forced to ref. Inexperienced and lower tiered refs are stuck reffing lower tiered games. I'm an experienced, north vancouver ref, so I ref primarily in North Van at KM. Unfortunately with the lack of refs in the VIHL, and the large number of new refs based out of Vancouver/Burnaby, it's hard for the league to schedule experienced refs for lower tiered teams just because most of the experienced refs are occupied with with the upper tiered teams. Plain and simple, you can't put an inexperienced ref in an upper tiered game.

I had a question for you fellow VIHLers, do you find that the ref'ing has gone to shits this season, or is it just me? Missed calls, over-calls, refs being completely arrogant and just a lot of douchebaggery going on...anyone?

Depends on who is reffing your games. I've had my fair share of reffing with people who shouldn't be reffing. In my opinion there are only about 5 or 6 strong refs in the league, but most lower tiers will never get to see them. I can't speak for other refs, but for me, I don't care who wins a game, I don't keep track of score, I don't keep track of penalties during a game, I just call a game like I see it. I try to be as neutral and unbiased as I can be. There will be missed calls in games as this isn't the NHL with 4 officials on the floor, with instant replay, etc, and that's just the way it is. Your attitude towards the refs goes a long way though. If you act like an ass to me, I'm going to make sure I watch you when you're on the floor, especially if I've given you fair warning about something you're doing like light hooking or being overly aggressive, etc, and penalize you as you commit further infractions. You treat me with respect, and that will go a long way, but won't give you a get out of jail free card for any infractions you may commit. Games, especially playoff games where tempers are hot and games a little more aggressive are very hard on the refs. Refs don't want to interrupt the flow of the game, but you cross the line a little too far, and a penalty should be assessed.

Like I said, I can't speak for all refs, but I do know that they're probably trying very hard to call the game right and fairly. Experience is the limiting factor here for the lower tiers.

What team in Bronze are you on? The league tries hard to have 2 refs at each game, but some refs bail last minute and is very frustrating for many of the loyal/dedicated refs, and the scheduler. PM me the names of the refs that you find that their attitude blows, and I can comment on them on our year end peer review.

whoa whoa whoa Ryan, there are still some pretty good and experienced refs in the Vancouver/Burnaby tiers. There are less of them there but they do exist!!! It's harder to notice them because they're overshadowed by the large influx of new refs
