are they trained to flirt with you there or something? was looking at some jeans and this chick comes by and starts talking me up for a good 10 min, asking me all this personal stuff etc. etc.

by the point that my friends want to leave, she kinda mentions whether id like to try some jeans on, but were half walking to the door

anyways, main point - girl seems really into me, underlying implication that i should buy something? i now feel like buying jeans

shiiit, anyone else?

they're doing their job - you're getting attention without having to pay for it unless you want to tip by buying something. Stop complaining.

My 20 year old cousin and I walked into Mantique guildford. The rape begun when he asked to try on a pair of jeans.
Me, being an LB, I watched my cousin fall victim into becoming the prey.

Mantique is ALWAYS hiring too. Shows how much their employees like working there.

i always wear my earphones in there so i cant hear em and i just ignore, and i just walk in, see how overpriced it is, and walk out.

miss_crayon
03-22-2009, 04:56 PM
i can understand mantique is only trying to get their employees to get more personable with their customers, but it's honestly WAY too much. when i go in there, i feel as if i am being interviewed with questions and sometimes a little too personal. "what you doing today? Oh work? where do you work? oh so what you shopping for? oh your brother? how old is your brother? how does he look like? etc etc etc"

and also, they just don't seem to get it when i say "no thanks, just browsing" when they ask if i need help. it just keeps coming and coming.

03-22-2009, 07:19 PM
i kept seeing this one employee there and after a while she started giving me hugs everytime i walked into the store

then one day when i walked in, she asked me to buy her something. i just laughed at her
i told her to buy me something instead

thats exactly what happened to me, asked what i was up to, where i work, if i go to school, etc. didn't seem to get the message when i said i was just looking around either

Not to mention their shady business practices. A friend of mine had "an interview" with them back in high school which turned out being to her working for free for four hours. They didn't hire her after.

Another friend had one of these "interviews" but Mantique told her she'd be working for free for four hours. She told them fuck it, she doesn't work for free.

an equilibrium of those, people who do their job by greeting you and even acknowledging your existance or that you're a valued patron, and are readily available to help and easy to approach when you need it (not talking to co-workers or slacking off somewhere), and not when you don't.

places like boysco and mantique are on 2 extremes of a spectrum. one pretends you're not even there, giving them and their store name a shitty and egotistic attitude while places like mantique basically serve to verbally rape you into making a purchase, which kind of crosses the line of comfort and shopping freely and comfortably.

Last time I went 2 years ago, they acted just like everyone says. Anyhow, a young guy went in and quickly bought something which later turned out to be a credit card fraud. The Mantique guy hustled through the crowds of people searching for the man who made the fraud. He soon gave up on the search and randomly told me it was his birthday..

they're only flirting with you because its their job... their sales procedure insists on asking the customers with personal questions in order to start a conversation ( they believe having good relations with the customers will net them future profits even if they dont get a sale on the spot ) and plus, the managers strictly reinforce the sales ppl to stick to that procedure .... not that i followed any of it

I use to work for mantique too

in our training, one of the requirements was to ask a personal question about the customer whether it be related to their shopping needs or not. I worked at the granville and robson one so it was easy to talk to random customers because most of them were tourists...

I wasn't very good at that because as a costumer I didnt like to be disturbed when i was shopping. I'd always get shit for not asking customers about their personal questions.

After you try on something, they keep talking to you and enforcing other clothes that may be related to what you're trying on

I ended up quitting for that hell hole haha :)

HK is horrible like that sometimes as well, at least twice where the sales wouldn't stop pestering me and saying how this and that underwear would go so well with the jeans I'm buying, all while I'm just trying to friggin pay for my jeans and leave, almost made me want to walk out.

Another time I said "I'll be fine browsing by myself" politely at least 2 times but the sales wouldn't leave me alone... pissed the shit out of me... almost made me want to say something harsh everytime.

I think that's the guy.
I hope he IS gay because some of the shit he does/says is creepy!!
My sister went in there and tried on a dress once and the upper body was quite loose and not form fitting. He came to check on her and focused on her chest and said that she could always wear tape on her boobs to have it stick to the dress...

Another time I went in there, dress-hunting. A girl was helping me with dresses, but the spiky haired guy also came to check on my in the fitting room. He asked if I wanted my dress zipped up. Then when I came out of the dressing room he commented the dress was good because it was tight and form fitting and that it brings out my ass...
Oh and be prepared for ALL the workers to come check you out when you're in the dressing room (you have to come out of your room since the mirror is outside). A third worker (guy) just stared at me in the fitting room, each time I tried on a new item. Creepy.

I'm sure some people love the attention, but I also like being left alone when shopping! Or at least being asked questions that are relevant to my shopping and don't pry into my personal life.
