So my family's camry came back from Toyota today and the service guy said the brake calipers are shot and needs to be replaced. They quoted 1200 for it. Just wondering if there is a better place to do it that would cost less? Any suggestions before it we bring it back to Toyota?

calipers aren't rocket appliances. Pretty much any shop can do them and unless it's in surrey, it'll be done right for a better price.

or buy a rebuild kit for $400 and make your current ones like new.

btw, what car is this? calipers don't just "break" or wear out.

probably just leaking.... You COULD hone it and rebuild it yourself or by a mech but it's usually cheaper to get off the shelf rebuilt calipers and return the core.

DIY at home or get a mechanically inclined buddy to do it.. its really easy actually... on the camry anyways

Did he say what was wrong with it? Im thinking it may just be a stuck piston.

it pretty easy to replace yourself. Its attached with 2 bolts in the back. Just dont forget to clamp the brake hose before removing it :P

well you pretty much HAVE to bleed the new calipers.

edit: o yea, and $1200 is bullshit. depending on dealership. it's about >30min per caliper for labour.

Any shop should be able to do this without any problems. Not sure what the Surrey knock was about but whatever. Didn't see where you were from but phone a few places for rebuilt calipers installed. Just keep in mind since your car was from back East that brake lines might be an issue and a flush won't hurt.

lol. Alot of bullshit in this thread, but some good info as well. Any shop can do it, hell, most people could do it in their garage. That quote is based on 120+/hr dealer rate, plus OEM dealer pricing for parts, including a bleed, etc, taxes, etc etc etc. Can be done alot cheaper then that.

i work at a toyota, and that seems high for a estimate. but your probably not listing all the things that were included for that price.
i think they probably quoted for replacement of caliper, and if it seized bad enough, it might have worn out the pad, and cut your rotor below minimum thickness and need to be replaced. i could see all those things costing that price, but not just replacement of the calipers...
or you could call them and ask them to get you a remanufactured caliper, and save some money that way. also check if both need to be replaced, or if its just one seizing.

if you dont know how, i wouldnt suggest changing it yourself. it may not be rocket science, but it is your brakes ;)
