Help Please To Hook TV To Comp

So first of all I'm not good with computers so hopefully this is easy lol.

Anyways I just want to be able to hook up my TV to my computer so I can watch movies and such. I hooked up the HDMI cabe and it didn't work.

I was just wondering how I can get it working? The cable is going from my TV to my tower of course and nothing happens when connected?

Thanks for the help!!

You'll need to enable the display, if you haven't already. Go to the Display Properties (right-click on the deskop and click properties), on the Settings Tab, click on the greyed out screen, and it should ask you to enable it. Otherwise, your video card software may have a wizard to step you through it.

I don't have Vista in front of me. Does it ask if you want to enable it, when you click on it? Is there a checkbox that says something like, "Extend windows desktop to this monitor"? If so, check it. Then click Apply.

What kind of video card do you have? I believe both Nvidia and ATI should have Control Panel items that can help you set it up. On my computer, I have Nvidia Control Panel, which has a Multiple Display Wizard, and is very straightforward to use. I would recommend going this route.

On my TV, I have to press the "Source" button on the remote to change the source so that instead of getting a signal from the coax cable (like for watching regular TV), it switches to PC mode and grabs a signal from the computer.

It would help if you told us the model of your TV.

Also, on the computer end, what type of port are you plugged into? If it's DVI, then the cable between the PC and the LCD won't carry the audio signal. In other words, there won't be any sound when you're playing things off from the computer to the TV. In this case, you'll need to plug in a separate audio cable from the PC to the LCD. I had to do this. You can buy a regular PC Audio cable from The Source.

Correct, HDMI does offer sound - but that's only if the source (the PC in this case) is SENDING audio down that cable towards the LCD. This is why I asked if you are plugged into the computer via DVI, because DVI does not send audio signals.

What is DVI?

I found the Nvidia control pannel which gets me to bring up the clone for my screen. (thanks for that of course) but my computer screen (Samsung syncmaster226nw) but the view on my monitor gets big and out of wack. How can I keep it the same size?

And if course my sound on my tv doesn't work.

Thanks for this help, this stuff drives me crazy sometimes.

This is what DVI should look like on your PC, should you have it:

Under nvidia's control panel, I would look around for anything that has "Resolution" in it. I believe the resolution you've set on the computer for the LCD isn't the LCD's native resolution. If you can, try changing the resolution for the LCD to something like 1280x720 (this is for 720p LCDs), or 1920x1080 (this is for 1080p LCDs) under nvidia's Control Panel.

Edit: I'm not sure I understand you. Are you saying the view on your computer monitor is messed up, or the view on your LCD TV? Either way, that can be fixed by changing the resolution, if I'm not mistaken.

Don't clone the screens. Set it up for DualView. You'll have 2 separate desktop that'll have independent resolutions.

Your LCD is probably 720p, so it's max resolution is 1366 x 768 (or around there). The Samsung is 1680 x 1050. If you clone the Samsung, the TV, with it's lower resolution, will have to pan the desktop.

^ This may be because now the TV is an extension of the desktop you see on your computer monitor. Try using your mouse and dragging a window on your monitor over to the LCD.

Videos started from your main desktop on the Samsung can be set to automatically play full screen on the LCD TV. The option for it should be in the nView Desktop Manager. Under the zoom tab, there should be a button for Full Screen Video Zoom. Set full screen device to Auto-Select. I think this is the option. I remember it was called Overlay Video Controls, or something like that, in ATI's software.

Are you able to drag windows to it? The path to the TV may be on the other side of the screen.
