99 bus is free?

I had to go to dt today and decided to take the transit
I hopped off at comercial dr to take 99 to granville street
wtf? people getting on the bus through back door, even the ppl getting on front door, driver is waving them in to just go in when they where trying to show their ticket. to make it flow faster, they are just turn blind eyes?

Yep, that's essentially correct. Because so many ppl use the 99 they open all 3 doors and just let people go on/off however they like.

It's just like the skytrain. If you are lucky, there won't be a transit officer checking your tickets, but if you aren't then you're busted.

if you don't have a pass or ticket. you are supposed to buy one at the front. If you know you have a valid pass or ticket, you can just go on in the back. That is how it is supposed to work.

Yeah... it's not free, they just use the honour system like the Skytrain for the most part.

The vast majority of the people that get on the bus go straight to UBC anyway, so I think they assume most of the people who board have U-Passes.

Though it's regulatory, I've never got checked for the 145 before,

because it only goes from Production to SFU, with like two or three stops in between.
imo checking would just be a waste of everybody's time *shrugs*

$3.75-$4.50 per trip x 2 trips x 20 days in a month that adds up

there are TONS of construction workers that dont pay for the skytrain

its funny when you see them busted

but hey...with this kind of system who can blame them for not paying ?

to my understanding the rear doors are for people that already have passes/fares.

front door for people that don't have fares and need to buy them.

but of course honor system gets abused.

Regular commuters should buy a monthly pass which is fairly cheap

umm...obviously the people who don't pay.....just because you don't get caught doesn't mean you didn't commit a crime..

and yes although it seems like a victimless crime, it isn't....

I am pretty sure that if everyone paid we would be have skytrain out to UBC already, the evergreen line would be built and there would be plans for a skytrain out to maple ridge.

Do they actually have random checks on the bus during the peak hours for say 98 B-line? I know they check on skytrain, but it would probably take way too long to check a bus? Or would they actually get on the bus and check everyone the hop off the next stop?

It's quite honestly a valid question for someone who hasn't taken transit in a while or in their life.

The world doesn't revolve around you, ya know.

During busy times, the buses are loaded. I doubt any transit officers will check then. They will just be creating more of a problem by being an extra body in the crowded bus, let alone that they can even manuever through the crowd.

btw, has anyone tried this before? If you got a one zone pass on the skytrain and you're skytraining to a two zone, and a transit officer comes in, you pretend to fall in a deep sleep and when he wakes you up, you pull the "oh crap! I was suposed to get off at "X" station. (which would be within your valid zone)"

Just wondering if anyone has done it before and what happened. lol. I barely take the skytrain and never got busted before. But the only time I wouldn't pay for the proper fare (when I have a 1 zone monthly bus pass) is when I'm skytraining to Metrotown from Vancouver. Seems stupid to pay for 2 zone, when if I were to take a bus from vancouver to metrotown, they wouldn't tell me to pay for 2 zones.
