if st louis beats colorado tomorrow we will play st louis, otherwise its columbus.

we went 1 and 3 against columbus this year, 2 and 2 last year, 2 and 2 the year before
we went 2 and 2 against st louis this year, 3 and 1 last year, 3 and 1 the year before

The way i see it, thank goodness they are not playing Chicago.
Their top players are used to playing the high pressure tournament play...

....not to mention, they do have a stanley cup goaltender. I don't care if its four years back, and the team khabibulin was on was tremendous....fact of the matter is that hes still a stanley cup goalie.

Playing against columbus, even though they had trouble against them would worry me less. Throw all the experience out the door. Steve Mason, as hot as he is, is playing a whole new puck-game......and same with the rest of the team with the exception of Peca and Commodore.

XplodeTheBass
04-12-2009, 02:11 PM
I think playing st louis would be the best. Chris Mason is an inexperienced goalie and steve mason has atleast tournament play under his belt. Columbus has more depth than stlouis and could mean more trouble.

Tim Budong
04-12-2009, 03:34 PM
as this should be moved to the general nucks thread in VAC

regardless
the blues are similar to the jackets
young goalie, solid young team with some vets to lead the way
the blues should make a bigger splash and threat than the jackets
chicago picked up fire lately as well
and sometimes
these young kids are not tired and have all the energy to endure a longer series

Didn't think that Van would play STL, but you're absolutely right.
Chris Mason didn't play a single game with the Preds when they were in the playoffs...

...And no.....Chris Mason isn't a young goaltender either. The dude is well above his prime.

My only concern is that nobody expected STL to make the playoffs. Now that they are in, their season is already a success regardless of how far they make it. The Canucks, on the other hand, this is their season to make it far. Anything less, and the season will be deemed as a failure. So lotsa pressure on the Canucks!

the proverbial bandwagon comes with state-of-the-art 5-point racing harness seat belts yet most fans refuse to wear them and every time it hits a speed bump, half the capacity gets thrown off. true fans buckle up! sure, there may be a smooth strip of road right now, but if vancouver canucks history has taught us anything, it's that there is a monster bump waiting patiently around one of the next few corners.

someone correct me if im wrong here.

the playoffs dont run like a tournament where the winner of bracket A plays the winner of bracket D, and B and A. for each round, each matchup is reorganized and put together based on the end of the regular season seeds.

for example if these teams win round 1,
1-SJ
8-ANA

2-DET
7-CAR

3-VAN
6-STL

4-CHI
5-CAL

the matchups for round 2 will be
2-DET
8-ANA

3-VAN
5-CAL

correct?

RayBot
04-21-2009, 09:57 AM
Yep.....in pretty much all pro sports with a LOONG season, they use the Top-Bottom Seat Bracket style for every round for a single consistent reason...

This is the ultimate benefit and the reason why its important to do well throughout the entire regular season, not just making the Top 8. This pretty much determines whether you are going to have Home Ice advantage for most of the playoffs, or gonna be on the road for most of the playoffs.

XplodeTheBass
04-21-2009, 10:27 AM
The only reason i say there going to be stanley cup champs is because this is their best equipped team in a long time, also the the most well rounded. Winning the cup would be a stretch but if any nucks team could do it that would be this one.

However, the author said that the Canucks were consistent throughout the season... Not really!

In a perspective....they were.....IF they weren't riddled with Luongo's injury, and also a few others, Salo being the one that sticks out the most.

Couple of games to really get into it in the beginning of the season...couple of games to get back into it after his injury....and a couple of really bad luck games, which do happen.

But other than that....that is a pretty consistent season.....at least a more consistent season than many others in the past.

Obviously what i just said brings back the argument that the Canucks entirely rely on their goalie to win every single game....but thats entirely a different discussion altogether.

Anyways im glad to see that my series prediction followed as planned. I give credit to the blues for fighting back in that second period after goin down 2-0 and comin back but i give even more credit to the canucks for not getting shook and keeping there poise. Luongo was a beast in the 3rd period and overtime and saved them from losing the game.

I'm sorry to say.....but it was luck that was on Vancouver's side today.

-Edler's skate deflecting the puck away from the net unintentionally
-the referee calling no goal on a goal that was clearly in before the whistle
-Burrows scoring at the worst possible angle from a rush.

A win is a win...thats all that matters.

1) Edler was lucky his skate happened to be parallel to the goal line. He could have easily deflected it into the net instead!
2) According to the ref, he lost sight of the puck and wanted to blow the whistle before the puck went in.
3) It wasn't the prettiest goal, but Gretzky's quote about taking shots comes to mind.

Yeah I'm not complaining about the win though. :)

True...but they reviewed the details in Toronto, regardless of what the ref 'wanted' to do. But what Toronto saw was a goal, then whistle...i am surprised that wasn't called a goal.

i don't know if khabibulin is good enough to let chicago go all the way. they definitely have strong team, but i doubt if they could beat any of the 4 remaining teams from the east.

vancouver has a lot to be proud of when you think about it. when the year first started, expectations were very low just by looking at the roster. many overachievers that helped them get as far as they did. still though, fans demand the cup and i wouldn't be surprised if gillis attempts to move some big names in the off season.

RayBot
05-11-2009, 09:28 PM
^^ Khabibulin is in the exact same scenario as he was in 2004, but not with Tampa Bay anymore, but a Tampa Bay looking team as it was back then now with the Blackhawks.

Khabibulin doesnt need to be great.....no matter what, a not-so-great goaltender is gonna take their team to the cup, and all these goaltenders look like they want it. But Khabibulin has something that the other goaltenders besides Osgood and Giguere (where one of them will be departing the playoffs by the weekend) already has is a stanley cup in their resume. Just that experience alone can help em win the cup....

As i mentioned before, that young chicago team, fresh outta world cup play is used to this high pressure atmosphere.

Fact of the matter is....3 years ago, Chicago was one of the worst teams in the league. The only realy big name they've really picked up was Campbell, and most of the team went through rigorous development. Its good to see a team go through a lot of turmoil to get where they are now.

And Vancouver has nothing to be ashamed about. A team has to win, and a team has to lose. The better team won....doesn't mean Vancouver was a bad team. The Hawks were a better team in the regular season, going into the playoffs,...and the rest told the story.

Xplode The Bass should just bow out, and wander over to the VLS side of things....

Actually Tiger....it was a charitable investment i never thought would have ended up being so grand. I donated an Autographed Luongo jersey to a Charity Hockey Tournament, and in return they gave me full advertising....the works. The jersey cost me 180 bucks to make, and a lil bit of help from Luongo himself and the Canucks org. All proceeds went to Canucks Place.

They put the jersey up for grabs in the charity auction and went for just a lil bit over $1100....

...so, the guys from the hockey tournament gave me a donation proof of half of that $1100 for tax purposes. You can do the rest of the math ;)
