We just got a Phase One 45+, a 39MP full frame medium format camera, and a Phase One 65+, a 60.5MP full frame medium format camera with a full assortment of lenses this week! These things are amazing... I just had about 12 hours of training from the Phase One rep this week on the hardware and Capture One software...my head feels like it's about to explode from the information overload. The Capture One 4.7 software absolutely kicks Lightroom's and Photoshop CS4's ass. The way it handles RAW files is amazing, as it's a totally new way of working the RAW's. Below are some sample photos.

Full frame image taken with a 6 year old 22MP Phase One H25. The tonal reproduction still beats anything that is 35mm based. The image is just a resized jpeg, only exposure correction has been performed.

100% crop of above image. Look closely, you can see the photographer in the model's eye, standing in front of a 7 foot Profoto reflector!

Now the good stuff. This image was taken with the Phase One 65+, a 60.5MP camera based on a Mamiya body (Phase One bought Mamiya) and Mamiya lenses. The lens used was the new 80mm f2.8, exposure was 1/100 sec, f10, 100 ISO. No editing besides exposure correction and resize was done.

100% crop of above.

PS... Photobucket has introduced some jpeg artifacts to my files, it looks like. GODDAMMIT.

wow...that resolution is amazing...even more amazing that the lens can actually achieve that level of resolution/sharpness. Can you take a photo with the 65MP camera and post it? Can you take a macro of something interesting with one of these cameras...it'll be interesting what you can see at 100% crop.

They actually gave you couple shots from the training? Nice!
I know you mentioned Capture One is better than Lightroom but Photoshop CS4 too? In what way?

Senna4ever

Yeah, they gave me all the RAW files used in the presentation.

It's much more efficient...it's hard to explain...I'll have to show you.

jason which version of capture one did you guys use?!

Senna4ever

Capture One Pro 4.7. It uses a totally different way of processing image files than version 3. It doesn't work in pixels like every other image editing software on the market. The Phase One rep gave me a free copy too!

One of your classmates came to the workshop, as did the Langara coordinator...can't remember your friend's name...tall skinny guy...name starts with a 'K'...

I did post a 60MP image above. I'll post more later...there's an image that really shows the power of 60.5MP.

I'll take a few macro shots either next week or the week after. They're letting me take it home for the weekend.

$70,000CDNish for the Phase One 65+ camera. Yes, it does blow away the Hasselblads, in image quality and in build quality. The Phase One backs are so durable...the rep was standing on it to demonstrate how well engineered it is....you would not want to do that with a hassy back.

Here's another image. This is an image taken with the Phase One 65+ 60.5MP camera. Exposure settings were 1/30 sec, f5.6, 50 ISO, original image size is 8984x6732 pixels. The white circle that I drew in is where the 100% crop image is taken from.

100% crop. You can see the little spiders!!! Apparently, the model was freaking out because the spiders started to crawl all over her.

Were you guys shooting while tethered to the Capture One software?

If you're a commercial shooter and the client needs shots for a billboard, yes. Even the (good) commercial photographers shooting for the ads in bus stop shelters shoot medium format.
