Anyone know a good key cutting shop? im trying to duplicate an acura and a lexus key if that makes a diff on quality.

stupid ass sears keycutting at Richmond center cant cut keys that are worn out. My aunt's took her car keys to them to get a duplicate but after 3 tries, they ended up having to refund my aunt the 7 bux. =\

dont know the quality but try home depot, ask for a higher quality metal it will cost more

older honda keys are pretty bad as well, I tried 4 times at 2 different places with my old civics key, none of them ever worked

cost around $40 to cut if i remember correctly, much cheaper than the $360 lexus quoted me for key, remote, cutting, and programming.

yea im looking for a set of keys too, for 05 g35 coupe, morrey infiniti in coquitlam quoted me 100 for the fob and 100 for the key..

yeah, i went to lexus cuz my key shell cracked and asked to get a replacement, said it will cost 150 bux. told me not to lose the transmitter either cuz that will cost 350 bux to replace. O.O

So what im doing now is buying a shell with a blank key off ebay so i can go cut it myself. What chip are you talking about? is it in the metal key or the transmitter?

I think my key would be the same type as ur key.

when i bought my car, it only came with 1 key.

i bought a spare key w/ key remote off ebay. lucky for me, my model lexus was still programmable via lock flips, gas/brake pedal dancing to program the key and program the remote.

went to broadway locksmith (on broadway about a block before cambie) as per suggestion by Ken@advance.

while i was there, i also bought a blank key, no chip in it. good to keep around to unlock the doors and or, keep the radio going but not be able to start the car up like at car shows =)

I'm not sure how old you car is, but newer cars should be able to be cut by code. Since they're not cutting it based on your current key (i.e. it uses a code), a worn key would be a non issue.

I think any decent locksmith should be able to find out if your key can be cut by code. When I had a key cut for my TSX Precision Locksmith did a pretty good job. They were able to look up my code, and cut a blank first to confirm fitment and then cut my transponder key after confirming the regular blank worked.

EDIT: Precision can also program the transponder keys since it sounds like you have one of those. You can try get one off eBay but just make sure that you have the right transponder chip. I know the Acura keys have markings on them to discern between the different types of transponder chips. Not too sure about the Lexus. I think Precision charged about $50 to program a transponder key, and a cut was a basic $3 cut. (I provided the key blank to them)

Transponder chip keys need to be programmed to be accepted by the immobilizer, otherwise you won't be able to start the car with it. Acura charges half an hour of labour to program a key. (that works out to about $50-$60 at Richmond Acura)

That's why you get them to cut it on a regular blank (the non transponder type) and make sure it opens your door and fits in your ignition before you have them try it on your pricier key. At least you'll know whether they know what they're doing on a $2 blank instead of on your expensive blank.

they didnt do that for me and they didnt tell me if it doesnt work they wont reimburse me so im like okay go do it. i ended up fucking up a key and having to order anyone.. i took a loss but i learned a lesson.

I went to Broadway Locksmith today, great service!

I ordered a uncut key off eBay and brought it to broadway locksmith, got it cut + reprogrammed for $50

this way i only spent a total of 60 bux on a new key, instead of 150 bux at lexus.

With keys? Nah..can't go wrong but please don't drop a term like, "never had a problem with Cambodian Tire" just on its own like that, 'cause people will read it, maybe even someone that works at their head office, and they'll think for a second, "gee, our morale boosting program is working" and ease off on their efforts to make their stores less 'goulag' like.

Now, I use the term goulag loosely here, because its really more akin to a Vietnamese Prison Camp, rather than Russian, based on the looks in the eyes of the hopeless people that work there. Just the other day as I was being interrogated by a hairy woman at (laughingly called) Customer Service prior to making a return I was thinking what must happen behind the scenes to kill the last remaining ounce of joy in this mustachioed lady with the slightly underperforming ass. I bought wiper blades Cathy. They didn't work on the German designed and engineered gotta-buy-dealer-only parts car my girlfriend bought. I have a receipt. Just spit-balling here, but chances are, I bought them. No, I didn't throw out the parts like a fucking jack off, although I'm glad we spent the last 10 minutes examining them. Oh look, now we know why I was in line for the last 20 minutes as you sweat the guy with the phone holder that was obviously not designed by a person with access to a phone for measurements. You see that look that maybe she's decided that she can proceed with the reverse transaction. Good move Cathy! Don't worry, you'll make that quota up later I'm sure.

Then she asks for the fucking Canadian Tire money, and you start to understand the true nature of the scam. The fucking tax they make by the fact that the canadian tire money is long since gone. Nice.

So yeah, let's be careful on the terminology.

i went to them last year to get my ebay key cut for my bike. Charged me $1. Key works and great service IMO.
