This is actually a wives tale, American beer isn't necessarily weaker then Canadian beer on average it's just measured in a different way. It might taste different but that's a whole different issue.


...Government regulations require that all beer sold in Canada show the alcohol concentration (alcohol concentration by volume) on the label. A standard bottle of beer (341 ml and 5%/vol) contains 17.05 ml of alcohol. Unlike most countries, Canada employs a minimum percentage labeling. In most nations, the labeled alcohol percentage is either the average or maximum percentage allowed. However, as of 1927, most Canadian provinces require the minimum alcohol percentage to be labeled rather than the average. This move was meant to eliminate inaccurate nonalcoholic labeling as well as fraudulent advertisement.[1]

The rationale for standardizing alcohol content (since loosened and disproved) is that consumers would tend to select only high alcohol beers and the breweries would have a war with ever escalating alcohol content. In the USA they solved this by keeping the alcohol content a mystery to the consumer unless they make an extra effort. When alcohol content is shown on American beer, it is often labeled by weight. Since alcohol is lighter than water, this can leave the mistaken impression that American beer has much less alcohol, on average, than Canadian beer. A 3.2% beer in the U.S. (by weight) would be a 4% beer in Canada (by volume).[2]....

I think the perception of American beer being weak is due to the fact that so many of them drink "light" (piss) beers...

"Coors light"
"Bud Light"
"Miller Light"
"Corona Light" - Fuck, I never thought regular Corona could get any "lighter"

I worked for Labatt when I was younger and the alchohol content is exactly the same for a can of Bud in the U.S. as it is in Canada. From my knowledge, most canadian beer (at least ones in the Labatt Corp) is made with cleaner water, and some say that is a big reason why people seem to get drunker faster with it.

If you guys are ever bored enough to test for yourself. On a weekend, go with a couple of your boys and drink 1-2 pitchers of beer each at a Canadian restaurent. Drink Bud, cause everywhere has it. The next weekend go to a pub or restaurant accross the border and do the same thing.

My friends and I have done this and for whatever reason, we always end up just kinda full and full of piss on the U.S. beer. A little tipsy but never as drunk as when we are at home.

As for American beer being weaker, all I know is a year ago at a golf tourney in the states me and a buddy finished off a 15 of miller high life and an 18 of bud light after 18 holes and by the end all I was was tired

yeah, a little too quick. I agree, he was probably already really wasted. I also suspect that because he took such a long time to finish that beer bong, he was probably depriving himself of oxygen.

a similar thing happened to me before in a pop drinking contest with my friends haha. I was slamming down pop really hard and not taking breaths, all the burping and gas blocked off my airway and totally knocked me out cold haha. :blushsmile:
